This book grabs you from the start. Tradgedy strikes Britt Andersen when fire takes the life of her sister, and almost her eleven-year-old niece, Zoe. She finally meets her brother-in-law, and for the first time discovers that her sisters life was far from perfect.

I love this author. Each of her books have a suspenseful plot and great characters. This is another must read!!!!!
Britt Andersen finds herself playing Nancy Drew after Greta, her estranged older sister, perishes in a fire that also almost claims the life of her 11-year-old niece, Zoe. Remorseful at having lost her chance at reconciliation, Britt leaves Boston, where she produces a late-night news talk show, for the rural Vermont community where her sister lived and died. Her intended short stay for the funeral is extended both by unexpected feelings of connection to Zoe and by the alarming news that the fatal blaze was of "suspicious origin," a phrase that develops a personal resonance when she learns that Greta was trying to locate their mother, who'd deserted them when they were little. After her brother-in-law starts behaving oddly, Britt joins forces with a local reporter to build a case against him. Predictably, Britt too becomes the target of arson and attempted murder. While the author plays fair by giving reasonable hints that still allow for a pleasurable surprise twist, her paper-thin characters generate little interest. A successful professional who must have considerable emotional intelligence to do her job, Britt acts as if the most basic human feelings of love and attachment are an unknowable mystery. Her strictly amateur sleuthing succeeds only by accident.
Great suspense and mystery.
very enjoyable read
Great Book! Great Author! I can't wait to read her next book.
To find her sister's murderer, Britt desperately tries to sort thrugh from innuendo is a close-knit town.
MACDONALD AT HER BEST.
Patricia MacDonald writes great suspense books.
girl goes to investigate sister's death in a fire, and falls in love w/her sister's husband. not quite as suspensful as her earlier novels but still good
When her sister is killed in a suspicious fire, Britt Andersen heads for the small town in Vermont where her sister lived, along with her husband and young daughter. Lots of suspense and suspects.
Loved it!!
Murder and family secrets in a small Vermont town.
Lots of suspense and a surprise ending.
Lots of suspense and a surprise ending.
Disappointed. Started off good, but then rambled and lost my interest. I skimmed to get to the end, I didn't care who set the fire after a while. Revelation was too far-fetched. Weak plotting.
when her estranged sister is killed in a fire, Britt Andersen heads straight for her sister's town, where she meets her brother-in-law and her 11year old niece - who narrowly escaped the blaze. Suprised by the bond that she forms with her niece, Britt stays to help her recover from the tragedy. But when she clashes with her brother-in-law, Britt begins to suspect that her sister's life was far from perfect. Then the deadly fire is declared arson.........
I really enjoyed this book

This is a good book. It keeps you guessing on the who done it and it's a quick read.

This one of the best books I've read! I love MacDonald's way of telling the story...keeps you involved..right to the surprise ending! She is defintely another Joy Fielding!
