Grant Morgan is one of London's most eligible and unattainable bachelors. He's also a powerful member of the Bow Street Runners, and when he's called to the waterfront late one night to investigate a drowning victim, Grant is stunned to recognize the face of Vivien Rose Duvall, a well-known woman of the night. He's even more startled when he realizes that she's alive. With no one to care for her, Grant carries Vivien to his home and revives her, only to learn that she is suffering from amnesia.
Vivien hesitantly accepts her handsome rescuer's claim that she is his mistress, despite her misgivings about her true identity. Nevertheless, she can't deny the marks on her throat that prove her near-drowning in the Thames was not an accident, and now she must trust the man who claims her as his paramour, for her life is in danger. As Grant searches for Vivien's attacker, the two find themselves falling in love, all the while struggling to stay one step ahead of the evil forces that will stop at nothing to see Vivien dead.

A very sweet love story. I really liked that the characters had flaws and learned to love one another in spite of those flaws. It made them much more realistic than many characters in Romance novels. This is a fast read - great romance and great mystery.

This is the great first book in a series of (I believe), three books. I thoroughly enjoy Lisa Kleypas' writing. Highly recommended.

A historical romance in Regency-era London that has a mystery with it. A beautiful cortesan is fished out of the Thames, at first taken for dead, she is only unconsious. The policeman who finds her recognizes her immediately. He has a grudge against her and brings her home to extract revenge. When she wakes up she has amnesia and acts like a different person. Although all evidence indicates that everyone is correct about her identity, she can't help but be uncomfortable about it. She and the policeman fall in love and pursue the case to find out who tried to killer her.

A great book! The storyline was original. The characters felt real. Reading the book put me into the story with the characters. What a great story! The ending was predictable, but it was a great ending anyways. I cannot believe how much I loved this story.

This is probably one of my least favorite Kleypas books. I really like Grant in the other two Bow Street books, but didn't love him in his own book. Maybe didn't help that I read the books out of order, perhaps he would have appealed to me more if I'd read him in order.

I thought this was a good start to the Bow Street Runners series. I liked the interaction between the H/h and the theme of mistaken identity. The mystery element was just alright for me but I don't expect an "edge of the seat" mystery/suspense when I am reading romance. This book is a keeper and I look forward to continuing the series.

An ok romance. I guess I'm tired of innocent wide-eyed virgins, maybe it's my age taking a toll! I think this would have been a more interesting story if the romance was actually between the courtesan and the bow street runner. The dialog/plot was ok, and the book was a nice lite read.

I loved it, as I do all of Kleypas's books. Grant is a wonderful hero and I'd love to have him watch over me.

Tough, jaded Grant Morgan, a Bow Street Runner, is called to the Thames dock to investigate the death of a woman. However, the woman is not dead and Grant Morgan knows her. She is the scandalous beauty and courtesan Vivien Rose Duvall.

Morgan does not like the woman but decides to take her to his home for care and protection. Some months earlier, Vivien had started rumors that shed turned Morgan down when he requested her favors.

I tried to think why he would be so upset that hed decided to use her while she was under his roof (as revenge for the embarrassment). Morgan was a self-made man. Coming from a very poor background, Morgan had fought and out-witted others to get to his current status. Thus, the rumors would have severely hurt his pride.

Although some parts were predictable, the book moved at a lively pace. The last 3 Kleypas books I read were rather forgettable.* FYI: However, the next 2 books in this series -- LADY SOPHIAS LOVER and WORTH ANY PRICE are part of that Top 100 Romances List .

*Kleypas has an incredible 15 novels in the Romance Writers Top 100 Books (printed in November 2010).

Bow Street Runners
1. Someone to Watch over Me (1999)
2. Lady Sophias Lover (2002)
3. Worth Any Price (2003)

Kleypas's characters are not your run-of-the-mill Regency fare--Grant lacks a noble lineage while Vivien's "membership" in the demimonde is unusual to say the least--which makes them even more fascinating and thoroughly absorbing. Toss in a puzzling mystery to solve and an intriguing look inside the workings of the famous Bow Street Runners, and you've got a novel well worth reading. No wonder Lisa Kleypas's books are consistent bestsellers--you won't be able to put this one down
