Regeane has grown up with an abusive family. They treat her with abuse and disdain - even fear - because she is a werewolf. They try to control Regeane because she is distantly related to Charlemange, and her family hopes to benefit from this. They get their chance when a marrige is finally arranged, but Regeane is afraid for her life if anyone discovers her ability to turn into a wolf
The story is well written and very descriptive. There are a couple of sex scenes, including a woman/woman coupling. However I found them to be rather tasteful in their depiction, and not overly graphic.

First in a series. Historical fiction mingled with fantasy in this tale of a young wolf-woman named Regeane set in during the decline of the Roman empire. Borchardt has her sister's (Anne Rice) flair for invoking horror without the excessive wordiness that makes some of Rice's books a slog-fest, at least for me. The book also had bits of explicit sex in it, but the scenes were fairly well done and not just gratuitous groping so I didn't roll my eyes excessively or anything. LOL
Her historical detail was also decidedly un-romanticized and very realistic sounding, quite violent and descriptive, and that in and of itself often evoked enough 'horror' without even mentioning the wolf sharing a body with a human woman! Compelling and interesting read, and I will definitely be seeking the other two books in this trilogy.

In my opinion, Alice Borchardt is a better writer than her sister, Anne Rice. Anne is great most of the time, but Alice is great all of the time. This series was ahead of its time; now that vampires and dark romatic fantasy are all the rage, it fits right in with the best of them.

I was pleasantly suprised when I read this book. The story keeps your attention throughout. It's a refreshing change to the unrealistic Anita Blake and other fantasy series with strong sexual themes.

This is Anne Rice's sister...she's trying to go for the same sweeping feel of history that some of Anne Rice's novels have (this one takes place during the fall of the Roman Empire), but frankly, she misses her mark - she's just not as talented as her sister. Still, if you didn't have Rice (her earlier works, of course - as her later ones have also fallen short) - she'd be passable. The story goes in jumps and starts however, and she doesn't always explain things well at all. In addition, I found the female lead character annoyingly easy to victimize. She lacked the "spark" that makes some characters great...and she seemed naive and too willing to follow others instead of striking out to do what's best for her...then she's sort of "rewarded" for all this complaisance by basically falling into the arms of the one man who would be perfectly matched to her - she just falls into it by accident, or serendipity if you're a more optimistic type! Its unlikely and a bit silly if you ask me. Anyway, you may like it more than I did

This is the first in the trilogy. But I just could not get into this series. It seems crazy to say, but there was just too much detail, too much history that got in the way of the actual story. I wanted to read the story, not a history of the roman empire!

A decent read - falls a bit short of what it set out to be, but in the end, an entertaining romantic fantasy. More for the ladies than the guys (and I'm hardly the typical male fantasy reader) but worth reading nonetheless.

This book is one of those that you will not be able to put down. I read and was filled with the story and could not help but to engorge myself until I could not keep my eyes open any longer. The story is all consuming, my only gripe is the explicitness of intimate moments. I feel it was not necessary for the story to be as engrossing as it was.Ms. Borchardt is a great writer without need of overt physical material to compensate.

Alice Borchardt is Ann Rice's sister so she comes from a line of the best writers. This is a great paranormal novel, dealing with werewolves and ancient myths and magic. The charcters are wonderful and the story line is great. Its a page-turner you wont want to put down!

I really could not get into this at all. The writing style was sub par at best. I could not even make it through chapter three. The story was hard, very hard, to get into. There was no decent plot presented in the 60+ pages that I read. It's good if you are into paperback porn however, which was all I got out of it. There are a multitude of sex references in constant succession. Even in a quick description of a horse, Alice had to get into describing of the horse's mating equipment.
Through reading what I did, I was constantly confused as to what was happening. Alice does not clarify what is happening in a situation, so you are left wondering why the character is being attacked, chased, or what is even happening in a general scene. Even the character's thoughts are kept a secret from the reader. Really, there is better fiction out there, unless you're into this stuff, I wouldn't advise this at all.

The Silver Wolf is a richly textured, lush epic of history, romance, and fantasy, all interwoven like a beautiful tapestry.
This was an enjoyable and interesting book to read. I will order the other ones in this series.

This book ranks in my top 5 favorites of all time. If you like books about the oppression of women and how the heroine deals with her difficult situation, you will love this book. I mean, who wouldn't want to shape shift into a nearly invincible wolf when the going got tough? Plus there's the whole political drama around the power struggle between the church and those who wanna be. This is a beautiful story about a woman whos alter ego is a wolf and how she's caught in the middle of things much bigger than herself. I loved the dynamics going on in her head when the wolf and the human have differing opinions on what to do. LOVE this book!

This was the first book in the series and is my favorite. I like Alice Borchardt's style although it can be a bit jumpy and hard to follow sometimes. I like the history, the how the characters feel accurate to the time...unlike so many historical novels that feel like a 21 century gal trying to force her values on the rest of the corrupted society. A different sort of werewolf story but very good all the same.

Very strange but a good read.
Interesting historical perspective about life after the fall of the Roman Empire. I saw the werewolf as a metaphor for a woman helpless to make her own decisions and being used as a political pawn wishing to be all powerful and independent.
Excellent book great mixture of magical and old world mystery.

I read this book in three days. It was such a joy to read it kept me up til late at night.
I really enjoyed this book and would highly recommend it.
The Silver Wolf takes place in Rome during the Dark Ages and revolves around a young woman named Regeane who is a shapeshifter (woman to wolf and back again). After her mother dies, she is forced to live in a locked-up room by her uncle and his son who are working hard to find a royal match for her so to speak and fetch a hefty price for her so they can continue with their overindulgence in drinking and wenching, etc. In Regeane's many attempts at freedom, she is befriended by several colorful characters along the way.
All in all, I found it to be a very engaging read!

A romantic werewolf novel set in Roman times. It's not historically accurate - anachronisms abound, particularly in characters' attitudes and the way they behave. It's also written, it seems, with a screenplay in mind. I could almost feel like I was watching it on late night TV, right after Buffy or something. But, that said, I thought it was good fun & quite entertaining.

This was a great book once I got into it. Took about the third chapter for it to get interesting, but once it did I couldn't put it down.
Intriguing story with just the right amount of suspense. Keeps you engrossed in the story. A different werewolf story. Interesting to learn the author, Alice Borchardt is sister to "Interview with a Vampire" author, Anne Rice.
