i'm glad i HAD to read this book for philosophy class. I'd tried to read it once before and got bored with it. but after i read it twice for class, i found it one of the most beautiful and moving books i've ever read.

In the novel, Siddhartha, a young man, leaves his family for a contemplative life, then, restless, discards it for one of the flesh. He conceives a son, but bored and sickened by lust and greed, moves on again. Near despair, Siddhartha comes to a river where he hears a unique sound. This sound signals the true beginning of his life--the beginning of suffering, rejection, peace and, finally, wisdom.

Full of sensory images and rich description. Kind of stalls in some point. It can be dubbed as a self-help book, which I don't like, but subtly enough to be enjoyable as the classic it is.

An interesting narrative following the life of a young Indian boy into manhood. He goes through a lot of changes and meets a lot of people, including the Buddha. Very good book

A classic for seekers.

This book had been recommended to me multiple times, and I know many people who love it. However, I had a hard time getting through it. Its emphasis is more so a spiritual/philosophical message (which my friends tell me has meant different things to them at different points in their lives which is why they often reread it), but I just couldn't connect to the plot or the writing style.

I'm still reading this book for my religious studies class but I really like it so far. It poses very real questions about what we as individuals consider sacred and how we view ourselves in relation to the divine. I can't wait to see how it's going to end just because I don't think there are any answers.

Siddhartha was for me the kind of book that provided soul refreshment in small chunks...perfect for reading a short, self-contained chapter in a rare moment of solitude that leads to reflection and meditation...and many moments of, "I can relate to that!"
