The 3rd book in the McKettrick Cowboy trilogy. This is Jeb and Chloe's story as Jeb attempts to win the bet laid out by his father that the ranch will belong to the first of the sons to marry and produce a grandchild. As with the other brothers, the path of love does not run smooth for Jeb and Chloe. Their relationship makes for an interesting story.
It is not necessary (but it is helpful) to have read the other 2 books in the trilogy - High Country Bride and Shotgun Bride. Having the background of the previous 2 books helps to understand all the family dynamics. Characters introduced in each of those books are included in this book.
As with all of Ms Miller's books, her characters are fully fleshed out and their antics bring smiles to your face as you read of their exploits.

In 1885 Indian Rick, Arizona Territory, former Tombstone teacher Chloe Wakefield confronts her husband Jeb McKettrick who deserted her once he saw the daguerreotype of her with her spouse Jack Barrett. Chloe insists she was not married when she wed Jeb, but he refuses to listen to her. However, his family especially his father and new wife and his two sister-in-laws accept Chloe as part of the family especially when they learn she came to town to ask help in finding work from her beloved Uncle John Lewis, who recently died.

As Jeb tries to ignore the attraction that got him in trouble in the first place, Chloe fits in well with the chaos that has become the McKettrick brood since the patriarch started the marriage-first born contest. However, he struggles to resist her lure and when her former husband comes to town to cause trouble, Jeb knows he would die to keep Chloe safe.

One of Linda Lael Miller's best, the story is part of the McKettrick series -- Jeb's story. Set in the Old West, Jeb is in competition with his two brothers to marry and start a family in order to inherit Daddy's ranch.

Set in 1880s Arizona Territory, the final installment in Miller's McKettrick Cowboys trilogy (High Country Bride; Shotgun Bride) finds the short-tempered McKettrick brothers still squabbling and still vying for ownership of the Triple M ranch, which their father, Angus, will give to the first son who marries and provides him with a grandchild. For youngest son, Jeb, the ranch is the one thing in the world that he holds most dear, so with both his older brothers already wed, Jed needs to move it or lose it. A quick marriage to schoolteacher Chloe Wakefield gets him in the race, but when he hears that his new bride already has a husband, he hightails it back to the ranch instead of sticking around to learn the truth. But Chloe, reputation in shreds, isn't about to go down without a fight.

This book was as good as the first two. This is the third book in the McKettrick Cowboys series (Jeb's story). The other titles in the series, in order, are: 'High Country Bride' (Rafe), Shotgun Bride' (Kade), & 'McKettrick's Choice' (Holt).

This is the third vol. in the McKettrick Cowboy trilogy and it's the story of Jeb, youngest of the brothers. Also see vol. 1 (High Country Bride) and vol. 2 (Shotgun Bride). There's also an add-on called "McKettrick's Choice" which is the story of the half-brother, Holt.

Secondhand Bride with Jeb & Cloe McKettrick, was as good as High Country Bride with Rafe & Emmaline McKettrick and Shotgun Bride with Kade & Mandy McKettrick. I love Linda Lael Millers books. She is a great author and she keeps you interested in the story. Each bride was a strong individual and uncowable by these men. Each had a story unique from the others. I love that Ms. Miller included a story of their step-mom and their dad and their bundle of joy. I also liked that Angus McKettrick, the dad, had a son, Hold Cavanaugh/McKettrick, before these three and he is brought into the stories and in Secondhand Bride more of his story is told and he has a child that is introduced. I don't like the bargain Angus invokes upon his sons and in Secondhand Bride he includes Holt in the bargain. I think it was awful of him to pit his sons against each other. I love how Emmaline, Mandy and Cloe and I think Conception, boys step-mom, worked it out in the end. I also have to hand it to all those women who signed up to become mail-order brides. Although it seems adventureous I'm not sure I'd have wanted to be one. Enjoy!

Jeb was charming and witty in the previous 2 books of this series. However, when he got his own story he seemed to be drifting through life and a bit spoiled. Chloe Whitfield turns out to be Marshall John Lewis daughter (Lewis died in the last book and was the love interest of the Arizona Hotels owner). This was one of the two major coincidences that ruined the book, in my estimation.

Chloe rides up to the Triple M Ranch -- with fire in her eye; shes looking for her husband, Jeb. There seems to be a question of whether Chloe bothered to divorce her 1st husband (Jack Barnett) before marrying Jeb. Most of the story revolves around their arguments about whether or not she is legally married to Jeb.

Thank goodness Ms. Miller added other love interests to this book because 430 pages of arguments between Chloe and Jeb would have gotten old pretty quickly.

The second (rather large) coincidence occurred in the chapter before the Epilogue. I dont want to ruin the surprise, but it takes place on 4 July 1887. The possibility of this happening must be 1 in a billion, or so. Its ridiculous.

Fortunately, the next story about Holt is excellent.

3. Secondhand Bride (2004)

Third book in the McKettrick series. This one finds Jeb face to face with his wife. Chloe came to Indian Rock because she had received work that her uncle (who was really her father) was very sick. She did not expect to find Jeb. To make matters more interesting- Jeb feels that are not married, because Chloe did not tell him she has been married before and her ex-husband has taken the divorce papers. The ex-husband shows up in Indian Rock and tries to kill Jeb.
The wives (all three), deliver their babies on the same day and will not tell Angus which child was born first. How will Angus divide the ranch now.... ..

et in 1880s Arizona Territory, the final installment in Miller's McKettrick Cowboys trilogy (High Country Bride; Shotgun Bride) finds the short-tempered McKettrick brothers still squabbling and still vying for ownership of the Triple M ranch, which their father, Angus, will give to the first son who marries and provides him with a grandchild. For youngest son, Jeb, the ranch is the one thing in the world that he holds most dear, so with both his older brothers already wed, Jed needs to move it or lose it. But Chloe, reputation in shreds, isn't about to go down without a fight. The romance between Jeb and Chloe runs lukewarm, but Miller succeeds in drawing a compelling picture of 19th-century ranch life populated with flawed but genuinely likable characters. Prose as bright as moonlight on the prairie keeps the pages turning, and a perfect, if highly improbable, ending ties things up nicely. Still, the story has an unfinished feel, leaving readers to wonder if a spinoff involving Angus's long-lost son Luke and his daughter, Lizzy, is in the works.
