Historical romance, set in the rebellion of Bonnie Prince Charlie that ends in the slaughter of Culloden. Lots of background, but I would have enjoyed more with the characters.

A must read if you have read any of The MacGregors series. You can see how it all got started with the original Serena Macgregor, Daniel's mother.

One look at the ravishing red-haired beauty and Brigham Langston was captivated. But though Serena MacGregor had the face of an angel, she was a wildcat who spurned his advances with a rapier-sharp tongue. To hot-tempered Serena,Brigham was just another Englishman to be despised. But in the arms of the dashing and dangerous English lord, the proud Scottish beauty's hatred soon melted with the heat of their passion.

I read this because she's such a popular writer, I wanted to what all the fuss was about. I was yawning at the beginning, because it wasn't really sucking me into the fairly routine historical romance novel plot. Later on, though, I have to admit that there were passages that were well written enough for the reader be caught up in the action.

The Gabaldon novels do this time period much better; this one feels rushed. Large blocks of time and background action are explained away in one paragraph. It seems as though the interesting, well-written passages are always sandwiched between less gripping filler. Good if you want a quick read that progresses faster. But then, most people who read this are trying to catch up on the history behind a popular (more modern) series of hers.

I found that sometimes her writing and imagery created clear and plausible portraits in your mind - and sometimes similar passages just went bad somewhere along the way and make you want to roll your eyes at the overwrought cliche.

Not the worst romance novel in the world (by far) and not the best historical fiction either. I think Liz Carlye is doing the same thing with steamier results. (Yeah, she is bit looser on keeping to the historical accuracy sometimes, but that's not really why you're reading it, right?) I guess if you don't want to go in for the 1,500+ pages or so of the Gabaldon series covering this subject, read this one and you'd be satisfied.

This Harlequin Historical book is the beginning of the MacGregor saga and you couldn't ask for a better beginning. You can see where Daniel MacGregor gets his spunkiness - his ancestor Serena is just like him. Serena MacGregor is a red-gold haired angel face with a personality of a wildcat, but that didn't deter Brigham Langston. This romantic story is filled with love, laughs, war and rivalry.

As typical Nora Roberts' style, the reader can really "see" the Scottish highlands and feel the emotions of the characters as Roberts brings them to life. Very descriptive and emotional, REBELLION leaves nothing to the readers' imagination regarding how the main players feel or think.

I originally read REBELLION after I had read several of the MacGregor books and enjoyed comparing Daniel to his Aunt Serena. They are both full of life, and eager to share their joy with others, but you'll always know exactly where you stand with either of them. I wouldn't want to get on either of their bad side. They are the types that would make bitter enemies, or fervent friends, and their antics are enjoyable when told by Roberts!

Don't miss this book - the one that started it all!

Oh, my! Scotland in 1745. "Against the bloody background of the Battle of Culloden..." meet Scot Serena MacGregor (about as far opposite of serene as you can get)and Brigham Langston, one her avowed enemies: the English! And a Lord, no less. Although the story is predictable, Nora Roberts is delightful at the details and the personalities. An excellent example of historical romance.

Scotland, 1745
Scottish beauty Serena MacGregor's hatred of all English began as a child when she watched as a band of Emglish soldiers attacked her mother. Her brothers friend Brigham Langston is no exception to Serena's loathing.
Although Brigham eventually proves himself worthy of the MacGregor family's respect, Serena is still reluctant to abandon her hatred for him. But Brigham has other plans. Serena has captivated him with her beauty, her passion for life and commitment to her beliefs, and he refuses to let her antagonistic attitude keep him from winning her....this was a wonderful read, done in a more classic romantic style than her latest work. I loved it!

Coll MacGregor, eldest son of the MacGregor clan laird, returns from Paris with his closest friend Brigham Langston, earl Ashburn, an English nobleman. Coll and Brigham are Jacobites, as is the MacGregor family, who are willing to risk all to put their Stuart King back on the throne of Scotland and England. The two men travel together to Scotland to meet and gather the clans in preparation for the arrival of Prince Charles Edward Stuart, Bonnie Prince Charlie, and war.

When they reach the MacGregor home in the Highlands, Brigham is prepared to meet Coll\'s family, but he is taken totally unaware by the beautiful, vibrant, hot tempered Serena MacGregor, Coll\'s eldest sister. Sparks fly and tempers flare, as Serena makes her views known about all Englishmen, and Brig, the \'Sassenach,\' in particular. As war plans are fleshed out, Brig and Serena fall in lust and then in love. The characters are wonderful and the mixture of humor and intensity, with the historical background, make for a winning combination.
