Another great story in the Puzzle Lady series. A crossword competition threatens to unmask the Puzzle Lady as a fraud, but lucky (for her!) murder gets in the way of the proceedings.

This is the third book in Parnell Halls Puzzle Lady Crossword Mystery Series. In Bakerhaven, Connecticut, lives renowned local celebrity Cora "the Puzzle Lady" Felton. Cora shares a home with her niece Sherry. Cora is originally from New York, so at times she finds this small town lacking. Sherry is the one who actually constructs the syndicated crossword puzzles. Cora doesnt have a clue as to how to do a crossword puzzle, but is very good at solving murders. By day, Sherry is a substitute teacher, and Cora is a hard-drinking, smoking, many times-married old gal. She is also unsentimental, tough-talking, and underneath it all, nice.
Crossword puzzle creator Harvey Beerbaum (who also lives in Bakerhaven) has come up with a plan that Cora and he should Co-host a charity crossword puzzle tournament. Since Cora knows nothing about solving puzzles, she and Sherry try to come up with a way out of it, but are unable to do so.
Throughout the book Harvey seems very interested in having Cora make a show of her puzzle-solving knowledge, which makes her wonderdoes Harvey know that Cora is only the front for the Puzzle Lady, and that Sherry is the real cruciverbalist?
The week of the tournament, the married town hussy, Judy Vale, is murdered. The police are convinced her husband, Joey, did it in a drunken rage until they discover his perfect alibi. Cora, however, isn't so sure his alibi is airtight and begins to poke around.

During the tournament another murder takes place. And Yikes!...a third! The thing that tied all the murders together was the fact that a puzzle was left at each murder scene. Cora puts her skills to work to solve the murders, but I have to say that the evidence in this one was very slim and it seemed like no one would have been able to solve it with what was given. However, I still enjoyed this book very much.
