I wasn't sure what to expect when I first picked up this book. I must say I was pleasantly surprised. An interesting story and well formed characters kept my interest throughout. Upon finishing this book, I immediately started book 2.

I don't know how I missed this trilogy! I loved it book one and immediately got all three and raced through reading them.

This entire series is the best reading of the past decade. It is so cleverly written, set in modern day New Orleans. I love "The Monster", who goes by another name and has been hiding in a monastery in Tibet until he learns that somehow his maker (the real "monster" in this tale) is still alive and continues to work his evil with the backing of the political and scientific community. The characters are fascinating! The story wraps up nicely at the end of the third book. However, probably because of popular demand, there will be more-the next coming in June. I can hardly wait!

This is a hard book to put down. I love the way Dean brought the monster to the present day. I also love the way it's set in New Orleans, where I live; it can be a really creepy town at night.

This was much better than I expected. I read the original Shelley Frankenstein novel about a month before I read this, so it added to the enjoyment.
This book takes place 200 years after Shelley's novel. A serial killer called "The Surgeon" has the city of New Orleans gripped in fear. His M.O. includes stealing body parts. Frankenstein's creature, now in hiding at a Monastery half way across the world, is called by an old acquaintance to come to New Orleans and determine if his creator, Victor Frankenstein, is somehow still alive and again performing his grisly experiments.
A very good sequel/reimagining of the original novel's story. Obviously, this is the first in a series, so expect an open ended finale.

Very interesting read. Grabs your attention and holds on to it through out the book. There are many different story lines going on at once that all revolve around the main plot. I really likes this book, I am looking forward to reading the second book.

Oh I loved this series! its quite a different take on the frankenstein story and I loved it! I couldnt wait for he next book! good thing I had book 2 already bit had to wait a few months for book 3 which just came out! all 3 are good and he takes the Frankenstein story to new levels! in modern day life and the good ole fight of good against evil..( and boy are some of theses guys evil!) in typical Koontz writing he keeps you on the edge and wanting more! I wont give away any of the story ( as some people who review on here do !! and it just drives me buts.. Dont give away the surprises! it would ruin it for people!!) Id just say.. if you like Koontz you should love this books and all 3 in the series!

I've had this book and its sequels on my shelf for several years. Finally decided to read this first installment on Halloween. I wasn't sure what to expect given Koontz' past history of having some really great novels (i.e. Watchers, Intensity) and not so greats (The Taking, Seize the Night). Well, I was pleasantly surprised with "Prodigal Son." It was a great update of the original Frankenstein story with Victor Frankenstein and his monster both surviving for the past 200 years. Frankenstein, who changed his name to Helios, has managed to extend his life and is creating a super race of beings to take over mankind. While the monster has turned more human over the past 200 years and wants to put an end to Frankenstein and his mad plan. The book is a nice blend of science fiction, crime novel, and horror. I would recommend it. Now to get on with Book 2 - City of Night.

Like expert plate-spinners, the authors set up a dizzying array of narrative viewpoints and cycle through them effortlessly. These include one of Victor's creations who suffers from autism and is trying to understand it; a cloned priest who serves as a clandestine member of Helios's army; Helios's custom-made wife, unique among his creations in that she's allowed to feel shame; and, tying it all together, a classic buddy-cop set of homicide detectives who slowly come to understand that the butcher they're chasing isn't quite human. The odd juxtaposition of a police procedural with a neo-gothic, mad scientist plot gives the novel a wickedly unusual and intriguing feel. The familiarity of the Frankenstein myth makes much of the story arc predictable, but it's still a compelling read, with an elegant cliffhanger ending. (Feb.)

What's better than Dean Koontz and a classic story? If only he'd finish the third!!
If you love Dean Koontz, or any well put together paranormal thriller, this is the one for you. I bought Book 1, 2, and 3 after just reading the first few pages of Book 1. The plot keeps you moving, and the quasi-historical references keep it interesting. Throw in an evil mastermind and a couple ethical cops and it's a sure winner.
I love the old Koontz and had been away from reading his books, then I saw "Frankenstein" and I was hooked again. I love this whole series and highly recommend it. I read it first from the library then purchased my own set as a keeper.

I would have enjoyed this book a lot more if the ending didn't leave you hanging. I knew going in that this was a trilogy but, I like trilogies that have three distinct stories that have a stopping point for each one. Other than that this was pretty typical Koontz with quick chapters and lots of action. I especially enjoyed Carson (I love it when there's a tough girl character).

Koontz creation of a modern day doctor Frankenstein brings a new twist. There is suspense, action and surprises that keeps you on edge. This doctor Frankenstein really is a creationist who is continuously trying to perfect his creations through cloning and creating new species of humans. A great read.

Great book! Koontz's usual "can't put it down" style. Can hardly wait to read book 2.
It captured my curiosity, then my interest when I started reading the story. My rule of thumb is if I don't get interested in the first fifty pages I stop reading. i was captured. Then it all fell apart. One silly gambit after another until there was a pile of absurdities that went beyond interest to disgust and annoyance. Shelly's book was quite believable in a macabre way so the reader could be in both worlds, the obscene and reality. Koontz goes way too far until the story becomes total horror-fantasy and leaves even a hint of believability way behind. I had swapped for both book I and II but after reading I, I'm throwing both out. I won't even bother going through the effort to swap these because it would be spreading disease.
Wets your appetite for the books that will follow. You are in the author's hands and transported.

If you like Dean Koontz the you'll like this, but personally I've read enough of Kootnz to not like the formulaic approach he has. You quickly get to a point of "read one, read'em all".

Dean Koontz has written a great reinvention of the Frankenstein legend. In the 21st century, not only has Frankenstein developed his intellect and become well-spoken, but he's an enemy of the scientist who created him and is now busy creating other beings. But this time, he uses body parts and cloning in combination. The problem starts when some of these creatures start terrorizing the city streets with their violent "experiments" and killings. Frankenstein, now Deucalion, has taken refuge in a monastery high up in the mountains. When he hears of the atrocities commited by the "New Race" he leaves the monastery to hunt them down as well as to hunt down the man, Victor, who created him. Since this is Book One, Deucalion, hasn't yet killed Victor. Victor is such a nasty character I hope Deucalion gets him in Book Two. I find Koontz a good writer; better than most "horror" writers out there. Even though he's often over the top with his characterizations and plot development, I enjoy Koontz's imagination, intricate plots, and how he's able to keep me in suspense though I should know better. This book fits the bill perfectly!

I thought Frankenstein had been done to death before I read this book. Dean Koontz manages to make the tale fresh and new, and exciting like only he can. And the total cliffhanger ending already has me clamoring to read Book Two.

Starts out kinda slow but then picks up speed. Once I got through the first two chapters I couldn't put this down. The take on the Mary Shelley novel is quite unique and intense. Can't wait to start on Pt 2. A must read for every Dean Koontz fan!

Plot went a buit astray from the first one but still left me waiting for the third book to come out!

I could not put this book down. From chapter to chapter, this book relates events about one character or group of characters, then jumps to another. With other writers, this style can be very distracting. With Koontz, it just makes the book more compelling. Great read.

After really enjoying my first Koontz book - Frankenstein - I'll be looking for more of his work, well written with a new slant on an old story.
I thought this would be a turkey, but it's really fascinating.
If you think you know the story of Frankenstein, think again. Koontz is as always powerful, provoking, and graphic. This is the beginning of a terrifying look into humanity and the lack thereof. If you enjoy Koontz, you will enjoy this. If you have never read him and have a strong stomach, buckle up for the ride.

I received this from a fellow paperback swapper (thank you!). It was a fast paced read for me (and not many are these days). Koontz takes the two pivotal characters from Shelly's "Frankenstein" and brings them forward to modern times. Dr. Frankenstein is still up to his unethical tricks and has managed to prolong his own life through various methods (and oodles of $) while his first creation patch-worked from various body parts "Deucalion" has also survived. Deucalion has spent many years searching for purpose and has quietly been living among monks to find peace. He is brought out of his world of tranquility when he learns that Dr. Frankenstein is still creating monsters (though this time via modern methods). One of Dr. F's creations has gone renegade and become a serial killer (and collector of various body parts). Deucalion, because he knows Dr. F's motives so well, joins forces with the police to help find the killer. This book held my attention from beginning to end with an interesting story as well as interesting characters. It's humorous and horrifying and a very good read.

This is an extra copy of the book. I haven't read it yet but my husband is hooked on the series!
