Preacher vol. 4- Ancient History detours from the story of Jesse Custer and co. to follow the origins and early exploits of some of the Preacher Universe's most colorful characters.

The book kicks off with the story of the Saint of Killers. Brilliant and epic, this vignette has the medieval moral trappings of Dante or Milton. It contains some of the best dialogue and imagery in any graphic novel I've ever read. Judging by this one story, the Saint of Killers could be the (anti)hero of his own perfect, overwhelming series.

Story two follows the life of the aptly named Arseface. Its interesting to see him before his...transformation, but most of the story was already known. Still, the details make Arseface more human and sympathetic, or at least as sympathetic as such a tragic and misguided moron can be.

The book ends with Jody and T.C., before they went back to tormenting Jesse. It documents their run-in with a rogue cop, a supermodel-turned-lawyer with a tape full of evidence in her panties, and a terrorist. Poking fun at action movie cliches, Ancient History ends on a fun note, but doesn't give any real information or insight into Jesse's family.

Overall The Saint of Killers gets 5 stars, the other two stories each get 3. As usual, the Preacher series never disappoints.
