This book was a little boring to me. Very little intrigue, no action, and the love story was full of problems that just disappeared all the sudden. A bit disappointing.

A clever tale told in a charming way. Two youngsters from different families are contracted to marry each other. Richard is a rebellious son with a domineering father and therefore detests the idea of marrying Julia. While still young, they grow to hate each other since Richard wants to thwart his father, and Julie thinks that Richard hates her. He abandons England while still a teenager and becomes a sailor (pirate/treasure hunter), leaving Julie stuck in a marriage contract and unable to join the marriage market.

They meet at a masquerade ball several years later (without knowing the identity of each other), and the events that follow are sometimes funny, sometimes a bit sad, and not usually what they appear to be. There are a couple of twists at the end--one probably expected but the other a complete surprise.

Some of the Malory family members play supporting roles in the book. It was humorous, adverturous, romantic and hard to put down. A wonderful and fun book to read.

Not my favorite, but JL's recent titles haven't really thrilled me. Difficult to fall in love with the hero, but that was going to happen with this story line, no matter what, I think. Overall, it was okay, but I wished I'd got it via PBS, instead of buying it outright.

The plotline in this book seemed somewhat shallow compared to her earlier historical romance books. I missed the intensity of interaction between the primary characters that I usually enjoy in Johanna Lindsey's HR books. I would definitely recommend waiting for the paperback release.

Love Johanna Lindsey, love the Mallory family series. All around satisfying book - could have used a little more tension in places.
