Set in the year 2059, this latest in Robb's long-running series (Naked in Death, etc.) featuring acerbic Lt. Eve Dallas of the New York police is the best in recent memory. In the past, Robb has kept whiz-bang futuristic effects to a minimum, allowing her world to grow organically out of dialogue and characterization; this time she incorporates science fiction elementsincluding the future of cosmetic surgery, cloning, scientific morality and physical mortalityinto her plot, giving the series a big shot of adrenaline. Eve and her partner, Det. Delia Peabody, are visiting the Wilfred B. Icove Center for Reconstructive and Cosmetic Surgery on a celebrity murder case when the center's founder, old Wilfred Icove, is discovered with a scalpel rammed into his heart. Wilfred Jr., also a surgeon at the center, is grief stricken, as is his family and most of the rest of the country. Wilfred Sr., everyone agrees, was a saint. Except he wasn't, as Eve and savvy mystery readers will have already guessed. Eve gathers her usual crime-fighting crew around her, including her drop-dead gorgeous, fabulously wealthy, staggeringly brilliant husband, Roarke. Robb tones down the romance and ups the action ante as the team uncovers an increasingly horrific crime that builds to a race-against-the-clock climax that will have readers cheering.

A pioneer of modern reconstructive and cosmetic surgery, Dr Icove, is found dead in his office - murdered in a chillingly efficient manner; one sweif stab to the heart. Detective Eve Dallas suspects a professional killing.
Known as "Dr Perfect", the sainlty Icovehad devoted his life to his family and work. His record is clean. Too clean for Dallas. She knows he was hiding something and suspects that this son -and successor- knows what it is. Then, like father and son, the younger Dr Icove is killed.
Dallas follows her darkest instincts into the Icove's pasts. What she discovers are men driven to creat perfection-playing fast and loose with the laws of nature, the limits of science, and the morals of humanity

A very good read. You don't have to read the Eve Dallas stories in any sequence. Nora Roberts does very well in the murder/myster/detective style. I like her characters, Eve, her husband, and her partner are great.

This morning I finished my read of the J. D. Robb (Nora Roberts) book, Origin In Death, I picked up in a swap with another PBS member. I liked it. A rollicking good sci-fi treatment of a multiple murder mystery that eventually dredges up the old/new issue of cloning. Mary Shelly's Frankenstein is mentioned by the lead characters, Lieutenant Eve Dallas and her wealthy husband, Roarke, but not Ira Levin's Boys From Brazil, though clearly both those earlier tales figure in the genesis of this one. I was a little trepidacious about the read at first, given my familiarity with Roberts from back in my RWA days, and during the first few chapters I found my fears justified as all of the characters introduced proved to be just too-too beautiful, just too-too perfect. I was sure this would turn out to be a bit of cotton-candy fluff ala Clive Cussler and his ilk and not at all suited to my banana split tastes where escapism is concerned. But I was wrong. Roberts seems unable to leave that romance genre habit of creating characters just too wonderful for words, but she is an accomplished writer and it shows as she puts those characters into real enough situations to make them believable. She's no Thomas Harris where police procedurals are concerned, but she does a remarkable job with that part of her tale, grabbing the reader with enough detail to âmake it real'. This is the 22nd book in the Eve Dallas series so perhaps one has little room to complain about the annoying acronyms (LC, NYPSD, EDD) or jargon (Free-Agers, off-planet) that pepper the text, none of which are spelled out at any point, but presumably would be clear to anyone who'd read the earlier works. Bottom line for me...it was a darn good read and I'll be on the lookout for more.

This isn't the kind of thing I usually choose to read so I was a little skeptical at first. A friend of mine had highly recommended it and even given me the book, so I figured I'd give it a try. And she was right. It was really good. At first I had a little trouble getting to know the characters since this books falls in the middle of a long list in the series, but after that, I did ok. It was really interesting and full of surprises. Another thing though, was that there is a lot of dialog and well, you can kinda get lost on who's saying what sometimes. It was a great read though and I'm going to start the series from the beginning soon. =)

"Totally blew my mind!!! June 23, 2006

This has to be the best Eve Dallas book to date! Ms. Robb not only gets 5 stars for creativity, but for scientific accuracy. What could have been a completely far fetched story was made chillingly believable by Ms. Robb's skill.

I also appreciated her ability to explain complex medical and scientific information in a way that was easy to understand.

The latest Eve Dallas/Roarke mystery. "Dr. Perfect", the saintly plastic surgeon & humanitarian, is murdered in his office. What secret did his perfect facade hide and does his son & successor share the secret? Can't say more without giving away key elements of the plot. I love every book in this series and this is one of the best.

New York Police Lieutenant Eve Dallas and her partner Peabody enter the hallowed halls of the Wilfred B Icove Center for Reconstructive and Cosmetic Surgery on a case. A hugely popular vid star has been beaten to a bloody pulp--and has killed her attacker in the process. After a post-op interview, Dallas and Peabody confirm for themselves that it's a clear-cut case of self-defense, but before they can leave the building another case falls into their hands.
Dr. Wilfred B Icove himself has been found dead in his office--murdered in a chillingly efficient manner: one swift stab to the heart. Struck by the immaculate condition of the crime scene, Dallas suspects a professional killing. Security discs show a stunningly beautiful woman calmly entering and leaving the building: the good doctor's final appointment.
Known as "Dr. Perfect," the saintly Icove devoted his life to his family and his work. His record is clean. Too clean for Dallas. She knows he was hiding something, and suspects that his son, his successor, knows what it is. Then--like father, like son--the young Dr. Icove is killed...with the same deadly precision.
But who is the mystery woman, and what was her relationship with the good doctors? With her husband, Roarke, working behind the scenes, Dallas follows her darkest instincts into the Icoves' pasts. And what she discovers are men driven to create perfection--playing fast and loose with the laws of nature, the limits of science, and the morals of humanity.

Scifi and mystery - thriller and romance novel. No one does it better than J.D. Robb aka Nora Roberts. In this novel, set in 2059 in New York City, Detective Eve Dalls tracks the cunning cold-blooded killer of a father and son team who have devoted their lives to reconstructive and cosmetic surgery. Their records are clean, not even a parking ticket betweeen them and that's too clean for Dallas. She knows there's something hidden that resulted in double homicide. While her husband Roarke works behind the scenes, Dallas follows her darkest instincts into the victims' pasts. What she discovers are men driven to create perfection, playing fast and loose with the laws of nature, the limits of science and the morals of humanity.

If you don't care for Nora Roberts BUT love Mystery/Dark Thrillers with a side of romance and a dash of comedy - then I think you'll love J.D. Robb's ... In Death series written by Nora Roberts alter ego.

I won't go into the details of the books but will tell you this: Superb character development, continuity of the story line (which means you really need to read the books in order although they can stand alone) is top notch, the relationships that are webbed and weaved together throughout each page are phenomenal and let's the reader 'really' get to know the characters.

Here's a list of all the books in order (I'm leaving off the 'In Death' part):

1 Naked
2 Glory
3 Immortal
4 Rapture
5 Ceremony
6 Vengence
7 Holiday

18 Divided
19 Visions
20 Survivor
21 Origin

I love powerful Lt. Eve Dallas and how the complex New York City crimes are solved. If you don't wanna bite her husband, don't read these books! Nora Robert's best writing is as JD Robb in this "In Death" series of some 30+ stories to date. I collect all of the JD Robb books, but skip the Roberts, whose stories are not as tight as those about Lt. Eve Dallas - ass kicker! If the future of New York City is like this, I fear these futuristic killers who are sneaky and complex.

A prominent Cosmetic Surgeon is found dead in his office, a scalpel in his heart. As Detective Eve Dallas investigates, she begins to believe the killer was a professional. The doctor's records are coded. What was he hiding? Who would want him dead? As Eve uncovers records of young women being treated by the doctor and his son, she begins to suspect that they are selling these women into prostitution. But when the younger doctor turns up dead, Eve recognizes that she was wrong about what the doctors were doing.

This is another very good addition to the "In Death" series. I thought the mystery was great. I liked how Eve and Peabody put the clues together to figure out exactly what the doctors were up to. I also liked that Roarke's family traveled from Ireland to celebrate Thanksgiving with him and Eve. Neither of them is used to entertaining family. As always, it's fun to see Eve out of her element. My rating: 4 Stars.
