Not a horrid book, but I'm definitely not going to kill myself looking for the sequels.

There is a decent plot, but the characters occasionally made me want to drive a stake through my brain. For a former lawyer, I thought the main character was painfully slow. Every time you flipped the page, the author was describing the lack of maternity clothes that fit in the main character's closet. How about the main character stop by Walmart on the way to the prison. Come on, she only needed 2 or 3 tops. Instead, she spends all her time following people, comforting the victim's daughter and surfing the net to find the killer.

While this was a quick cozy to read, it did take effort for me to stay in the story. The overall story was pretty good and I did enjoy the family dynamics. I just felt the main character could have seriously benefited for a good smack upside the head.

I recently read an article about the author Ayelet Waldman and her husband Michael Chabon in a book magazine. Although I knew about some of their more recent titles, I wasn't aware that Waldman had written a series of books which she dubbed the Mommy-Track mysteries. Intrigued by the premise of a one time defense attorney, now a stay at home mom and pseudo private eye, I found myself gulping down the pages of the first book Nursery Crimes. Not only did I enjoy this book and recommend it, but I rushed out to get the second book as soon as I finished the first one. Finding a new author is always a pleasure and I expect to continue reading Ayelet Waldman as quickly as she publishes more books in this series or other titles as well.

The murderer was apparent early on, but the writing is high quality and the characters are enjoyable.

Juliet Applebaum is a stay-at-home mom who used to be a public defender. Being a stay-at-home mom isn't always her cup of tea, but she's trying to make it work. With a new baby on the way and her daughter almost 3 years old, Juliet and her husband attempt to enroll their daughter in a prestigious Hollywood preschool. While it's no real shock that Ruby doesn't get it, it is a shock when the preschool's director is run down that evening and killed. Juliet can't help but wonder who did it. Was it an angry parent? Her cheating husband? You can take the mom out of work, but you can't take the investigative work out of the mom.

This is a really good series for a couple of reasons. The storylines and mysteries are always well-written. I also enjoy the character of Juliet because she is the kind of stay-at-home mom I can relate to. She loves her kids and wants to be there with them and for them, but she longs for a career and life that is just her own. She hasn't found a way to have both successfully, and in many ways resents that. It's honestly refreshing. Juliet and her husband also work well together as a parenting team, which is a nice element in this series. I highly recommend it.

Fun mystery read. First in a series. A stay at home mom solves a mystery, all the while her bratty kid is in her car seat. Enjoyable for us not-so-super moms.

A well written story that has appeal for both the SAHM and the "working" mom. The main character, Juliet, is an Ivy League lawyer who trades in her briefcase for a diaper bag but, like all moms, doesn't want to loose "Juliet" in "Mommy" and like most of us moms, she resents her children from time to time. I enjoyed this book and have already started on book 2.

Juliet Applebaum is as real as a character can get.

I like the premise of the public defender now a stay at home mom moonlighting as a detective. I thought the heroine, Juliet, had several "too stupid to live" moments by placing herself and her unborn baby in harm's way on more than one occasion. I'm hoping that this is a temporary personality flaw in the character and one I won't see repeated in the next book.

"This a great concept for a mystery/detective series. The characters are set with the Juliet, a stay at home Mom, who gave up her career to be with a headstrong two and one-half year old named Ruby, an unflappable husband, and a child soon to be born.

Nursery Crimes was witty and breezy at the start and a terrific page-turner at the end. Waldman did a great job with twists and turns..." amazon review
