Naomi Novik (born April 30, 1973) is an American novelist. She was born in New York in 1973, a first-generation American. Her father is of Lithuanian Jewish ancestry, and her mother is an ethnic Pole. She studied English Literature at Brown University, and holds a Master's degree in Computer Science from Columbia University. She participated in the design and development of the computer game Shadows of Undrentide, until she discovered she preferred writing to game design. Novik is married to entrepreneur and writer Charles Ardai. They live in Manhattan.
Her first novel, His Majesty's Dragon (Temeraire in the UK), which commences the Temeraire series, is an alternate history of the Napoleonic Wars in a "Flintlock Fantasy" world in which dragons are abundant and used in aerial combat. His Majesty's Dragon won the Compton Crook Award in 2007, as well as being nominated for the Hugo Award for Best Novel.
In September 2006, it was reported that Peter Jackson optioned the Temeraire series, including all forthcoming books.
In September 2007, Novik was awarded the John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer for best new science fiction writer of 2006. She also won the 2007 Compton Crook Award.
The sixth book in the series, Tongues of Serpents, was published in July 2010.
Naomi Novik has published six books in the Temeraire series. She has said she intends the series to conclude after nine books, with the end of the Napoleonic Wars. The seventh book is scheduled to be written by the end of 2010, for publication in 2011.

Current work
Naomi Novik is working on the seventh book of the Temeraire series. She has also said she plans to write a young-adult fantasy novel inspired by The Secret Garden.
Naomi Novik is the head of the board for the Organization for Transformative Works (OTW), a non-profit organization dedicated to the advancement of fan-media, including, but not limited to, fan fiction, fan videos (vids), and real-person fiction. The OTW project began in 2007.
