I have read most of this series, and enjoyed it a great deal. I only have one more to read (Sob!) I think this one is one of the best so far, because the method of murder is particularly inventive/interesting!

I didn't think this one was as good as some of the others in the series, nevertheless, it's worth reading, if only to advance the underlying story as we find out more about Frank's son and the murder of Sarah's husband. I hope you're reading these in order, otherwise the underlying story won't be as enjoyable.

I recently discovered this series and have enjoyed all the installments to date. Sarah Brandt becomes interested in a mission in Mulberry Bend that takes girls off the street. A good read.

Anyone who likes romance, mystrey and history will really like this series. The romance is two people finding something in common even though they come from different worlds.

This is the 5th book in Victoria Thompson's Gaslight Mysteries series. In this story, we do see a bit of competition for Sarah's affections in the form of a wealthy, widowed bank owner (introduced in book #4 as her neighbor's son's boss, also happens to be friends with Sarah's parents). In order to have closure over the death of his wife since he felt that he neglected her and didn't take the time to understand her, Sarah goes with him to the Prodigal Son Mission, where his wife used to volunteer to help wayward girls. Sarah becomes impressed by the Mission's goals, makes a donation of clothing, and starts to volunteer there herself. A few days later, Malloy is called to a murder in the park and fears that Sarah Brandt is the victim because the body has the same hair color, is the same size, and is wearing Sarah's trademark outfit and ugly hat. It turns out that the victim is a young woman from the Mission in the clothing Sarah donated. As a result of Malloy identifying the former owner of the clothing, he has to reluctantly accept Sarah's help in solving the case. All-in-all, this was a satisfying read and gives you a glimpse into the wealthy world Sarah left behind when she married Dr. Brandt years ago (we see her go to the opera, attend fancy parties, etc., and try to figure out how to merge her current life of service with the fancier life her parents want her to lead). I also enjoyed Malloy's jealousy throughout the story! :-)

When a girl from "The Prodigal Son Mission" is found dead wearing Sarah Brandt' dress and hat, Detective Frank Malloy and Sarah are drawn into the murder and Sarah into volunteering at the girls mission .... Sarah is being escorted to the opera and to parties by Richard Dennis, (the bank president who was introduced in the previous book in the series) and Malloy is jealous. I realized early on who the killer was, but it did not deter from the enjoyment of the book. More about Brian, Malloy's son and the ongoing "off the record" investigation of Dr. Brandt's murder. A great series.
I am still liking this series. I am really invested in Sarah and Malloy. With every book they are getting closer and closer to being a 'courting' couple. The odds they can ever become a 'real' couple are slim to none. Her parents are from the elite side of town and Malloy, policeman, is a grade below his side of town. This mystery was pretty easy to solve before Sarah did. She didn't get until the end. There is always a teaser at the end to keep me coming back for more. What is Sarah going to do about Abbie?Recommend.
Frank Malloy and Sarah Brandt are the key characters in this book. He is a policeman while she is a midwife. Together they solve murders. They are awesome characters whose investigation and interactions only improve. In this novel Malloy is called to examine the body of young woman killed in a park. Examining the victim he sees not only blond hair but familiar clothes that belong to his friend, Mrs. Brandt. However, when she is turned over, he sees another face. How did this young woman get Sarah's clothes? How did she die?
It is Sarah who discovers how the woman died and the the two begin to search for a killer. Malloy does not want Sarah involved but she is due to her medical knowledge and work and interest in the area in which the young woman lived. While the author tried to lead the read in several directions, I was able to determine who the murderer must be. It was the only individual who made any sense. However, rather than divulge the exciting ending I urge you to join Malloy and Brandt in their investigation of this interesting murder.

Reluctantly, Sergeant Frank Malloy agrees to look into the death, if only to keep Sarah from endangering herself by pursuing the matter. But Sarah cannot be kept out of the investigationand just as Malloy feared, her attempts to find the cause of the unfortunate girl's death in the circumstances of her life put her in deadly dangerfrom an unexpected source
Victoria Thompsons, Gaslight Series has yet to let me down! Only wish I had gotten the books in order. You really dont have to read them in order but might enjoy them even a tad more if thats how you read them. Sarah never ceases to amaze me! Such a kind-hearted normal pleasant person who pretty much just though common sense corrects an awful lot of badness going on in the world! Her work with the mission really ends up stopping a serial killer. The surprise twists and turns were wonderful and the weapon of death was really unique! A truly enjoyable read that I would whole-heartedly recommend to anyone and everyone! Cant wait to start another one!

A visit to the Prodigal Son Mission on Mulberry Bend gives Sarah Brandt something to think about. The mission takes in girls who are living on the streets and gives them another chance. Sarah donates some of her clothes and volunteers to help at the mission in her spare time. Detective Frank Malloy is called to City Park when a body is found. One of the girls from the mission has been murdered. With few clues, Frank knows that bringing the murderer to justice will be nearly impossible. But Sarah appeals to him to keep on the case for the girl's sake.
Another entertaining addition to the Gaslight Mystery series. Malloy wants to keep Sarah out of the investigation, but she just keeps insinuating herself back into it. I guessed the villain early in the book, but still found myself enjoying the story. My rating: 4 Stars.
