Michael Lawrence was born in Huntingdonshire, England. His family moved to Sudbury, Middlesex when he was four. He later attended Ealing School of Art and He worked as a graphic designer and photographer before deciding to concentrate on writing. When the Snow Falls was his first book to be published, in 1994. The story was later expanded into A Crack in the Line, the first book of The Aldous Lexicon. He is also the co-author of The Poppykettle Papers with Robert Ingpen.
