Admittedly I am a history freak, and probably only a history freak would stick with a 1.000 page book that is so heavy that it is hard to read. Having said that, this is absolutely a great book and I couldn't put it down. Margaret George brings Julius Caesar, Mark Antony and Octavian to life. This book has been meticulously researched and includes the works of her Egyptian doctor; the observations of her personal servants as well as Roman accounts of this saga. The characters seem fresh and real. A sensual tale of ambition, love, and power. It will take you three weeks to read this, but I thought it was wonderful.

If you like big sprawling novels this one doesn't miss a beat. A history of Cleo from her point of view. George is an amazing writer.

As always, Margaret George envelopes the reader in sounds, smells, and sights of the world she describes. I learned a lot from this book and enjoyed every word!

Margaret George showed an impressive portrait of Egypt and the Roman Empire in the times of Cleopatra. The research was thorough and well documented, but I think some of the descriptions of the events, landscape and feelings were lenghty and repetitive and the book could have been written in 600+ pages instead of 900+ pages. The part that annoyed me the most were the descriptions of the fleet and the army so many times. I think these parts could have been a bit more concise and not so detailed, especially since they are mentioned so many times throughout the book.

I had waited a long time on the WL for this title, and eagerly dove into it. Ordinarily, I adore anything from Margaret George, but this one I found long and hard to get through----not her best. I learned a great deal about ancient Egypt and Rome from the wonderful details she always includes, and loved that in her afterword she shared what was fact and what was fiction. I found her prose just a little bit flat, and thought she would have done as well in about half the pages. Notwithstanding, this is a historical fiction classic about a time and woman not much written about, and so it is worth reading.

One of the best books I have ever read! Yes it is a long book...almost 1000 pages...but every page is worth it! I didn't really know a lot about Cleopatra before I read this book (only what I learned in high school history) but now I'm hooked.

Long (957 pages) lots of war scenes, not Liz Taylor's version of Cleopatra!

Interesting, buy over 900 pages? Really? Not sure how much of it I can believe. Parts were very interesting, others just plain confusing. So many Greek, Roman, Egyptian and Latin names to keep straight. If you have a lot of time-go for it.

Great book! Very well written and interesting! The author did alot of research and this book transports you back to the time of Cleopatra and Anthony! Be prepared to spend several weeks reading this book because it is almost 1000 pages!

The book kept me engrossed all 957 pages. She was an amazing woman, politian, lover. I am sure I will read it all over again someday.
