This is the fifth book in the Kate Daniels series by the writing team that is Ilona Andrews. I pre-ordered it because I had to read it right away! I just love this series so much. This was a great book with a lot going on in it; we even get to learn more about Kate's elusive mother. This is definitely not a stand alone book, so go back and read the previous books in the series first if you haven't.

After being booted from the Order, Kate is trying to set up her own investigation company...but business isn't exactly booming. Then suddenly Kate gets a call from Atlanta's Master of the Dead that a rogue vampire is headed her way. Kate races to assist but things aren't happening like they should; something is nullifying the Master's control over his vamps. On the heels of this she gets another call from the Red Guard they want her to chase down a researcher and his experimental device. The catch is this device is somehow wrapped up with a secret cult and could possibly destroy Atlanta. To add to the mess Kate is trying to keep her relationship with Curran working and then finds out that her ward, Julie, has run away from school...again.

This is the first time I read the book in this series rather than listening to it on audio book. To be honest I think I like listening to them on audio book a bit better because the audio books are just so well done.

There is a lot going on throughout this book, more than in previous books. There are a lot of different storylines pulling Kate in different directions; although by the end of it all the storylines come together nicely, if maybe just a bit too conveniently. I know previous reviewers have mentioned that the timing of tech and magic waves are just a bit too convinient and maybe a bit contrived, and I have to say I agree.

Kate and Curran are finally sharing their feelings and trying to make their complicated relationship work. Kate inherits a new minion, a bouda who is causing trouble for Miss Bea is assigned to Kate as punishment, and he is an entertaining character.

One of the favorite parts of the book is where Kate visits the witch and learns more about her mother, her father, and her past in general. It was wonderful to learn more about Kate's history. There were a lot of awesome action scenes throughout the book and they are well done as usual. There is some humor throughout the book, although not as much as in previous books, still I laughed outloud a few times.

I did miss the fact that Jim wasn't in the book much and Julie, although she is in the story a lot, doesn't get much oppotunity to talk back to Kate. This book was a bit different than previous books because of all of the twisting and complexity of the plot, it seems like a bit of a transition book...like maybe we are finally gearing up for Kate to take on her father Roland. The book ends well and completes the story well, but throws another little twist at the reader right at the end.

Overall it was an excellent addition to the series. I think if you enjoy this series you will love it. Not a book to start the series on, too many things are happening for that. I enjoyed learning more about Kate's past and am eager to see what the next installment in this series throws at us.

"Magic Slays" is more emotional -- Kate discovers the cruel lies of her childhood, doubts Curran's love for her, and is faced with (possibly) having to kill someone she loves. She's stripped off some of her emotional armor and allowed others into her heart, and so these events are all the more painful for her to deal with.

We are treated to a "must defeat this or all around me will die" scenario. Considering how formidable the bad guys were supposed to be, I thought they were dispatched of relatively easily. The storytelling is good. But the book begins to bog down under the sheer weight of its cast of characters. Similarly, the resolution of the Julie issue felt rushed.

Lots of action and things going on. Kate (of course) is right in the thick of it. Kate learns more about her childhood (it's not good). She and Curran continue their banter with each other. After the events in this book and the conversations they have about her and her past, their relationship is stronger. I enjoy the secondary characters in this series too. Really looking forward to more Andrea.

Next up in this series: Andrea's book "Gunmetal Magic."

A stand-out quote for me:

Andrea raised her hand. This is the hand that slapped Aunt B.
(Kate) Maybe you should have it gold-plated.
(Andrea) Here, you can touch it, since youre my best friend.

Well, this is the most recent book in the Kate Daniels series to come out. I had read it before (the day it came out, actually), but I recently re-read it, and thought I'd make a post about it. As I've said before, I love Ilona Andrews, so, my review may be a tad biased, but, it is what it is. :D

Kate is facing something that could potentially kill most if not all of the citizens of Atlanta. She needs her best friend's help, as well as that of her main squeeze, and his 1500+ shapeshifters that he has control over. Will Kate be able to stop the evil before it kills them all?

This book is great, just like the others. In this one, Kate and Curran are mated, Julie is in the picture a lot more, since she's now living at the Keep, and we get to have Andrea as her usual charming self. Grendel also makes appearances, which is great, because, frankly, I love that shaved poodle.

I would not recommend starting this book if you haven't read the others. You could, but you'd miss a lot of character development, and some of the plots are reoccuring themes throughout.

All in all, this is a great book, with action, gritty paranormal surroundings, and romance. Ilona Andrews continues to be one of my favorite authors, and I will buy/read anything they put out. If you haven't read any of their books, pick them up, and give them a try! :)

The fifth novel in the series is fast moving and full of story lines that keep the reader focused. I've been hooked on Kate Daniels since I read the first novel in this series. Kate doesn't know much about her past but in this novel she is about to discover some truths she may wish she didn't know.

In addition, it's fun to see her relationship with the Beast Lord, Curran, maturing as they become a duo tackling paranormal problems in Atlanta. These include rogue vampires, magic that is going wrong and actions that can possibly destroy her beloved Atlanta.

Kate has moved into the Keep with Curran where she is called Consort. Curran is so protective that she chaffs at the limits he sets. She has her own investigative business and has been joined by her best friend, Andrea, who was fired by the Order when she turned into her alternate form of a hyena. Their first case involves finding a man and his device that have disappeared from under the Red Guard.

Kate has discovered that the device destroys magic and those who wield it. She believes that Saiman can shed some information about the missing man and his device. When she and Derek go to visit Saiman they find him packing and as they talk bullets riddle the door. They survive the attack but Kate has a feeling that something is wrong at her office where Julie, her ward, Joey and Ascanio are barricaded inside. They arrive to find that something is indeed wrong and action heats up.

The character cast expands but we read more about Julie, Kate's adopted daughter, and a new bouda Kate inherits because he is giving Aunt Bea, head of the boudas, problems. It's difficult to understand what is happening unless you have read earlier novels in this series where several of the characters are more fully developed. All in all, I thought the complexity of this one was my best read of the series.

Not nearly as good as the 4th book, but it is still a fast read.
