So to be honest... I sort of struggled at the begining of this series. The first was good, which got me wanting to read the second. I didnt really care to much for the second as much as the first and then with the circus of the damned it got better, took me a while to read but it was better than The laughing corpse. Although it was slow to really pick up and get into some real interesting things in the series for me, but my sister-in-law (she's read the books) was persistant and wanted me to keep reading. Also what I've began to realize is that this is only the 4th in a 17 book series! So I feel right now we are just learning some backstory, and I hope they continue to get better!

This book has got me hooked! I couldnt imagine being in a relationship with a werewolf...but then again if I was, I wouldnt be able to resist the sexual tension that's building between Anita and Richard.

In about the middle of the book I did get a little annoyed with Anita, she expects for Richard to tell her EVERYTHING that is going on in his life but gets pissed when he questions anything that she is doing. But just like the others, people are coming up missing (shapeshifters to be exact) and Anita needs to get to the bottom of it! You learn a lot about the shapeshifters and what they are capable of.

Not a whole lot of zombie raising and not a whole lot of vampires. But as ive written before Jean Claude will always show his face, and this time with a CRAZY agreement!

If you've enjoyed any of the other Anita Blake books this one is well worth the read!

adventures of a vampire hunter but more of an adventure story than horror. Some sex scenes. This is the fourth of a series.

Love this series!!! We have a closer look into who/what Richard really is. This book is the start of Anita's (and LKH for that matter) turn into darker, more sexual territory. Not for the squeamish.

Great story! I was hooked into this book and read it within a few hours with only a couple of breaks in between. The "villain" (there are so many after all) was a bit of a surprise, but got what was coming. :) Another great installment to the series.

I've read all of Laurell Hamilton books in this series. If you like books with action, humor, and sex, these books are for you. The only warning I would give is that they are very, very violent.

Laurell Hamilton is one of my very favorite writers and I really recommend all of her books in this series and her Meredith Gentry series

I really enjoyed this book in the series. It kept you guessing until the very end.
If you like the Twilight Saga, you will notice it resembles Eclipse just a bit. (book 3 of the Twilight Saga)

There is more romance in this book then there is in the previous 3. It was a good mix of both suspence/mystery and romance.

I think this is the book where, like in the Twilight series, people start siding to Team Richard or Team Jean Claude. I like this one because you actually get to see a romantic side to Anita, something that pretty much gets obliterated later in the series.

One of the pre-porn LK Hamilton books- dark, but very enjoyable. From Guilty Pleasures to Obsidian Butterfly, the Anita series is enthralling. But if you don't enjoy explicit sex (and some pretty stupid sex to boot), don't read the books from Cerulean Sins on.

This is book 4 in a massive 15 book series by Laurell K. Hamilton. It is about a vampire executioner/animator named Anita Blake. It is easily my favorite series of books ever written. They are very easy to read and keep your interest peeked. This particular book is a very good one in the series. If you have never read any of her books I recommend starting with book 1, Guilty Pleasures

The first 2 of the Anita Blake series were awesome and I tore through them both in a matter of a couple days. I struggled through the 1st half of Circus of the Damned but the 2nd half really hooked me into the series again so I continued with The Lunatic Cafe. It took me a while to get through this one cause it just didn't hold my interest. I don't plan to read anymore of the series at this point. If I find myself thinking about it again I'll go back. Unfortunately, I borrowed this one from a diehard Hamilton fan so I can't trade it. Sorry to all the people wishing for it!

The trouble is, Anita's occasionally furry boyfriend Richard is locked in a power struggle with Marcus. Jean-Claude, master vampire of the city and Anita's other love interest, is getting jealous as well. Ok Ok Ok! Now we are getting somewhere. We got sexual tension. We have a love triangle. We have Vampires, Werewolves, Anita! I am ready.

I am now so engrossed in this series I can't wait till the next book comes. Book #4 did not disappoint. I got what I needed.

Anita is now starting to feel something. For 2 men (well persons). It fits her. She needs both. They both give her something different. She does not know it yet. I love seeing more vampires and that world.

I find it interesting after reading the authors acknowledgments that she was pregnant at the time and had a baby while finishing this book. I guess that is the spin SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER

Why Anita goes does that lane in her mind. You see the writer and her personal experiences come out in this book.

A must read or a re-read for me!!

From the back of the book:
You don't volunteer for slugfests with vampires. it shortens your life expectancy. And you don't fall in love with a werewolf. It interferes with your work. Expecially when you're a preternatrual expert, like me. My business brings me up close and personal with all shapes and sizes of monsters. And not all of them want to kill me.
Take, for instance, the local pack of lycanthropes - that's werewolves to you. A number of them are missing, and they've come to me for help. Maybe because I'm dating the leader of the pack. I've survived a lot - from jealous vampires to killer zombies - but this love thing may kill me yet...

In this book Anita finally delves into the world of the werewolves when the lead werewolf ask her to find out what has happened to a number of missing shapeshifters (including werewolves). A very tense situation given that Anita's boyfriend just happens to be a werewolf also and the rival of the werewolf pack leader. Anita's picked up another rival also, a female vampire who want's Anita's "other" boyfriend, vampire Jean Claude all to herself. Can Anita stay alive long enough to find out what has happened to the missing shapeshifters?

As usual with an Anita Blake book, lots of stuff happening and sometimes the plot seems all over the place. But it all comes to together in the end.

This book begins where the previous left off so your best bet is to read these in order so you can figure out how these tangled relationships develop into the mess that becomes Anitas love life. Anita, Animator of the Dead, is seriously dating Richard the werewolf and is beginning to realize the perils of dating a monster. Jean Claude her other would-be beau is sticking his nose in their business because hes a jealous little vampire-man and hasnt been able to woo Anita with his vampire charms and sea blue orbs of promised delight. Im not a real big fan of the Jean Claude here. He does his best to ruin things for Richard and comes across as a bit of a mean-spirited brat. I was rooting for Richard in this book. His feelings seemed more real and I wanted him to have Anita, his teaching job and a peaceful normal life. If you hope for that too you may not want to read too much further along in this series.

Anita is still raising zombies and helping out the spook squad but I noticed she begins to spend more time with the monsters and their politics here than in any of the previous books. She encounters evil vamp Gretchen as well as enters into the midst of the lycanthrope pack where she meets sadistic Marcus and Raina and sees first hand what the lycanthropes are capable of underneath all of the beauty. We also get more glimpses of hard-ass I dont bluff Anita who refuses to back down from any big boy. It gets a little annoying in later books but here it still works, shes still got shit to prove. Edward, AKA Death, plays a big role in this one and hes always an enigmatic character who keeps my interest high.

On the downside, we are once again inundated with endless boring descriptions of the hidden guns and the Nike swish color (mine is silver by the way in case youre dying to know). Are you one of those freaks who will spend a sleepless night if you dont have the most insignificant of details about Dolphs wardrobe? Not to worry, here you go:

His hands were plunged into pockets of a long black trench coat. The coat looked too thin for the weather but maybe it was lined, though he was a little bit too bulky to leave room for him and a lining in the same coat.

I dont know about you but I wasnt holding my breath wondering if Dolph wore a lined coat or not. Sheesh. Tell me something interesting and relevant to the story, like the fit of his undies or the secret spot he applies his cologne and I may finally stop complaining about these details.

Seriously though, I like this book a whole bunch and think it is a solid entry in the series. Its old school Anita and her conflicted feelings about her two sexy men way back before she was uber powerful and attractive to every male in sight. Here she is still human with benefits just starting to make an appearance. She is vulnerable and I can relate to her need to be a tough girl. There are several subplots (but not enough to hurt my brain), lots of paranormal action and a whole lot of gore along with that slow burning sexual tension between the characters that I remember so well. Im having a lot of fun revisiting this series and the imaginative world Laurell K. Hamilton built a decade or so ago.
