Many books listed as Science Fiction are heavy on the fiction part and not so interested in the science part. This book is not among them. I wasn't certain how much I would like this book until I got into a few chapters of it and discovered the author using actual physics terms and using them in a way that was understandable while mixing them in with the fiction. Add to this the fact that it is well written, and has great quotes that sound like something someone might actually say and it ends up being a thoroughly enjoyable read, highly recommend!

What a deceptively "business as usual" book! It starts out with a big "oh wow" premise, tosses in some "hostile aliens", and it seems that it's just gonna roll along from there, as have many inferior books before.... but then Ringo starts to develop the major characters, we start getting into metaphysics, alternate universes, concepts of God, and a maulk-load of physics, and BOOM: great story! And even if you don't really like infantry military sci-fi (such as the "Hymn Before Battle" series by Ringo), press on through this first book in this series, because the next books are VERY different and worthwhile!

Great read. lots of action. Taylor puts physics into laymans language, which makes it understandable and that much more enjoyable. Highly reccomended.

A quick read and a fun story.Fast paced tale, it starts off with a bang and doesn't let up. Unsecured portals to other worlds open up on an unsuspecting Florida neighborhood. If you like physics, military S.F. or War of the Worlds variants, you'll enjoy this. Deep thinking allowed but not required.

Seemingly, a bomb goes off at the Univ. of Central Florida. The people on hand are grabbed as the intial team to check on it. A nice blend of suspense and some humor. The characters were quite real and likeable. A nice premise of alternate universes and how they would get open. I loved the PHD redneck. That was a nice change form the usual clueless or stuffed shirt one. A very good read
Excellent real science fiction.
A good space opera story, with excellent hard science mixed in. I'm not usually a hard science reader, but the characters and story carried the book well.
Good military SF.
When a 60 kiloton explosion destroys the University of Central Florida, terorism is the first suspect. But terrorists don't generally leave doorways to another world in their wake.
With time of the essence, the Secretary of Defense scrounges up the nearest physicist with a high level security clearance. With doctorates in everything from nuclear physics to electrical engineering, William Weaver, PhD, is the egghead's egghead. On the other hand, with skills in everything from mountain biking to screaming electric guitar, he's also fast enough and tough enough to survive when the alien doorways start disgorging huge alien 'bugs'! Or at least we hope he is fast enough . . .
