I really enjoyed reading this book. It told a lot about how search and rescue teams work to find missing people in the wilderness. It also also gave insight as to what it was like being a back country seasonal ranger for the National Park Service in the High Sierra Nevada Mountains. It was suspenseful and told a touching story of a man who loved the outdoors.
Very well researched and tastefully told, it was neat to both learn about the life of a backcountry ranger as well as to understand how a search-and-rescue works. At times the detail was a bit tedious, but I could appreciate the author's plight at deciding what to respectfully include and what to leave out. I found it to be an enjoyable read.
Very good. A sad story of a Muir type back country ranger of the High Sierra. A man that did not find a place to fit into in modern times. A story of shame on he National Park Service of not taking care and paying these rangers their worth.
Excellent combination of a nature adventure, biography, and detective novel. Blehm captures the wild beauty of the Sierra's and one man's love of it. He brings to life the complex life and mysterious end of a legendary back country ranger. A compelling read from start to finish.
This book was a little too detailed for me and I got bogged down - especially in the parts that dealt with Morgenson's mental state at the time of his death. However, my husband, who is much more of an outdoorsman, thorougly appreciated this book. It is certainly well researched. I did like the descriptions of the Sierra Wilderness and the sentiments expressed about the value of wild places.
