I've never read this author or series before, but diving into this thriller was no problem. So many elements in this books were truly and realistically terrifying, like being stranded in the freezing cold with no way to contact anyone. The mystery and drama that unfolded after that kept me turning the pages long after I had decided to put the book down and move on to other things. Don't be surprised if you have nightmares after you read it.

It was a good page turner for people familiar with the Rizzoli and Isles series and characters. Interesting to see them in a different backdrop ( northwest, snowy desolate area) instead of Boston. One of the sort of books you stay up until 3 am to see what is happening and why. Do not read when you have an early start the next day!

While attending a medical examiner's conference, Dr. Maura Isles runs into an old school friend who invites her on a cross-country skiing trip with his friends. But a sudden snowstorm and bad GPS directions leave them stranded on the side of a mountain. Searching for shelter, the group stumbles onto a remote village named Kingdom Come. But the town seems to have been abandoned. Meals are still sitting on the table, vehicles in their garages, and a pet is dead. As Maura and her friends wait out the storm and hope for rescue, they realize someone is lurking outside, watching their every move.

I love books where a person is stranded in extreme circumstances, surviving by their wits. In this story we have that plus the mystery of what happened to the residents of Kingdom Come. There is a lot of suspense. How will Maura survive the blizzard? Who left footprints outside of the window in the house they are living in? I couldn't put this book down and stayed up very late to finish it. My rating: 5 Stars.

I've loved all of the Rizzoli & Isles books (and the TV show!) and this was one of the best! My only complaint would be that I didn't want it to end!

Tess Gerritsen is an accomplished story teller; one who draws you in and doesn't let you go til the very end.

Quite the page turner! Fast pace, gruesome and excellent characterizations make this one terrific read from Tess Gerritsen. Would highly recommend.

I am hooked on these Rizzoli and Isles books. This one was the absolute best so far, although a lot more Isles than Rizzoli but brain thumping absolutely. Need to save for a while before I repost, for my children (adults) to read.

A spur of the moment trip becomes a terrifying nightmare for medical examiner Maura Isles. Far from home she finds herself and her traveling companions in a remote village which seems to have become a ghost town. Where are all the people and why did they leave so suddenly. But Maura and her friends may not be as alone as they think. Back home in Boston her friend homicide cop Jane Rizzoli gets word that Maura's charred body has been found. But the news leaves Jane with too many questions and she sets off to discover the truth.

This is part of the popular Rizzoli and Isles series and the focus is more on Maura this time around. I was so caught up in the story i read 300 pages in the first setting and finished it the next day. There are appearances from past characters and the story moves rapidly. There is a twist at the end that left me with a couple of questions but not enough to take away from the enjoyment of the story. The characters in the books are more interesting then their TV counterparts. A good read.
