I found this book to be an easy, enjoyable read. It pulled me in right from the beginning. It alternates between first and third person narratives which I normally find somewhat annoying but I think really added to the character development in this story.
Annabelle is at the center of the mystery. Her family has been on the run as long as she can remember but from what? When her father, obsessed with keeping his family safe, dies, Annabelle is left with only questions about her past and the unknown threat from which she has spent her life running.
Bobby Dodge is the detective brought into consult on gruesome discovery on the grounds of the long-defunct state mental hospital. A piece of evidence at the scene ties Annabelle to what remains of a horrible crime. Discovering Annabelle's identity and how she is related to this crime is what drew me in.
The plot, while somewhat complicated, never gets terribly convoluted and things are tied up neatly in the end. I felt like the conclusion, though satisfactory, was a little rushed and a little too neat. However, the characters were enjoyable and it was a light, quick read. I'd recommend it as a great vacation/beach read. It was never slow and there is some light handed romantic interest that never goes over the top. Just enough of everything, I'd say to be an all-around good read.
Bobby Dodge first appeared in the book, "Alone". Reading that book first will help you a lot with understanding a few of the characters in this book.

A book that will keep you guessing and reading until the very end. Hard to put down. A must read.
Really good!
suspenseful
Great Book, could hardly put it down. I stumbled across this author accidently and this is only the second of her books I have read, but definitely will read more. Great plot, characters, just good reading.
This book was so much better than the first in the series! I loved the first book but thought it was a bit confusing and I guessed the ending hslf way through. In this book I kept switching my ideas on what was going to happen and how it was going to end. It was surprising up until the last page. Hide was so good that I don't see how the rest in the series could even get better!
I love Lisa Gardner's books and I love D. D. Warren.
What can I say...this series just keeps getting better and better. Miss Gardner is a great author and I can't read her books fast enough! I am hooked on this series. If you love great suspense, humor and little romance intertwined pick this up, but read it in order so you aren't confused about the characters. "Alone" is before this one. You will be hooked like me.
THERE'S NO USE LOCKING THE DOORS:
It was the case that nearly killed him. Now a gruesome discovery in an underground chamber is about to resurrect his worst nightmare and Massachusetts State Police detective Bobby Dodge has only one lead: a young girl who's been in hiding for as long as she can remember
THERE'S NO USE TURNING ON THE LIGHTS:
Her childhood was a blur of new cities and assumed identities, But from who-or what-was Annabelle Granger's family hiding? To find out, Dodge must team up with former lover and partner D.D. Warren from the Boston PD, to track a woman from Bobby's past who's every bit as dangerous as the new killer. The tail will lead them to a chilling place where there's no one to trust....and no place left to hide.

non stop you just have to finish one of her best!!!!!!!!
AWESOME! This book was just fascinating. Lisa Gardner writes amazing mysteries with so many twists, false leads and purposeful misdirection. I've read a few of her books and they all keep you guessing until the end. Deciphering the many lives of Annabelle Granger certainly kept the police busy as well as Annabelle. She was kept in the dark her whole life while her father kept her blindly running away from something dangerous. The discovery process was very interesting and somehow linked with the serial killer they were hunting. Like I said fascinating. What a great read!
Annabelle Granger has been on the run from an unknown danger since she can remember. Her father taught her self-defense and how to take care of herself. But he never told her why they kept changing their identities and moving from place to place.
When Annabelle reads a story in the paper about a gruesome discovery of six bodies in an underground chamber, she is shocked to read one of the dead is wearing a locket with her name. She approaches Detective Bobby Dodge and Sgt. D.D. Warren to tell them her story, and help them find the killer of six little girls.
This story has so many twists and turns I had no idea where it was going. But, I was glued to the pages to find out why Annabelle and her family were on the run and who killed the girls and hid their bodies. The story alternates between first and third person narratives, but it wasn't hard to follow at all. If you like good suspense/mysteries that aren't obvious, definitely read this one. My rating: 4.5 Stars.

I loved this book! I couldn't put it down! It's about a woman that moved around all over the country as she was growing up. Her father would just up and move them with no notice at all. She never knew why. Very intriguing and fast paced. Murder mystery.
Another great book by Lisa Gardner! She is so great at making the characters real to you and also at keeping you guessing what's coming next.
This book had enough twists and turns in it to keep me guessing right up until the end. Great movie material!
Does anyone know Lisa Gardner personally? I'd love to know if she's able to sleep at night. This woman must have so, so, so much running through her mind. I was thoroughly confused (in a good way) for a great portion of this book. I've often said how easy it to to follow and guess what an author will do with this sort of book. It's actually one of the reasons why I stopped reading them years ago (before winning Live to Tell through FirstReads). Gardner has turned that all around for me.
I read this in absolute amazement. How did she keep all of this straight? How did she even think of all of this?
Anyone who knows me knows how much I love to sleep. Sleep and my reading = two of the most important things to me besides my family. And as much as I love to read I hardly ever pass up sleeping time for reading (I can fit the reading in during the day after all.) Yeah well, I stayed up until 2am last night. And this is coming from a person who, more often than not, goes to bed when her five year old daughter does. And, to make matters even worse, I was scared. Scared! I thought I heard something outside of my garage door. How crazy is that? That's how much this spooked me.
I've made up my mind that I'll have to read all of Gardner's books. That plus my already incredibly long to-read list will take my entire life but I'll have to try. I'm going to start The Neighbor now which is the 3rd D.D. Warren book and I've already read the 4th, like I stated above, when I won it from FR. The 5th book, not sure of the name as there are two different ones that I've found so far, will be read as soon as it's published. After that I'll have to make a list and go in order according to her other series and single books.
She's not an author to be missed for sure. This isn't a genre that I read much. Hardly at all. I haven't read any other, besides the few by Gardner, in over ten years. Actually, probably more like 15 years. But she's just too good to pass up. I'm in debt forever to FirstReads.
I need to find out if any of her other books are Bobby Dodge books - he's freaking awesome. I would say I hope this next one will be as good as the others but I don't have to - I already know it will be.

A real page turner. Nail biting excitement.
Great Story and characters. Really draws you in. Fast read and hard to put down.
Good story.
Better than good - this is Lisa Garner at her peak. Tense, riveting and I didn't see the ending coming until the last second. Check the other reviews for the plot synopsis, this is a great read.
This is the first thriller by Lisa Gardner that I have read and I really enjoyed it. It is the second book in the D.D. Warren series although Warren seemed more of a secondary character. The main focus of the novel was on Bobby Dodge, a sniper with the State police, who evidently had a previous affair with Warren. The pair are called to a very horrific crime scene, an underground chamber discovered on the property of a former Boston mental hospital containing six small naked mummified female bodies in clear garbage bags. A silver locket with one of the corpses, which may be decades old, bears the name Annabelle Granger. But is the corpse really Annabelle? No, Annabelle is actually alive and has been on the run with her family since childhood. Her father taught her self defense and would frequently move her and her mother to new cities, change identities, and live new lives. But why would he do this? Was it somehow related to the dead girls found near the old mental hospital?
This was really a good thriller. Annabelle plays a large role in the story (more so than D.D.) as she and the police try to identify the serial killer. Is he still out there and is he interested in Annabelle? Gardner throws out several different potential suspects and at the end, all was not as it first seemed. I have one other book by Gardner on my TBR shelves which I hope to read soon and I'll be on the lookout for more by her.

I liked the twists this book took and the ending was surprising as well. All-in-all, a good, quick read.
