The first book I have read by this author and I really liked it. A gay man is beaten, stabbed and left to die. Ben Kincaid and partner are asked to defend the alleged killer. Ben wants no part of the case, which has all involved wondering why. A plot within a plot and very well done. Now I have to start at the beginning of this series lol.

Master of the legal thriller.

The story is not only highly suspenseful, but the author reveals the true nature of the uselessness of hate for the sake of hating another who is perceived as different, or "outside the norm" to the extent of treating human beings as subhumans. Although I read this book several months ago, it's words stay with me and remind me of a quotation that I first read long ago, paraphrased here: "There exists a principle that will keep a man in everlasting ignorance. That principle is contempt prior to investigation."

Johnny Christensen has earned national notoriety as a sadistic bigot who beat and stabbed a gay man and left him to die. When Johnny's mother begs Tulsa attorney Ben Kinkaid to defend her son, Ben has one secret reason for saying no. But his partner, Christina McCall, decides to tackle the case. In Chicago, Christina faces the firestorm surrounding the trial. Johnny's only defense is his claim that he left his victim bludgeoned but alive. To prove that someone else committed the actual murder, Christina needs evidence -- and a motive to go with it. When unforeseen circumstances force Ben to enter the proceedings, he sees only one way to prove Johnny's innocence. But Ben's plan means luring a killer out of the woodwork -- even though he may kill again.

THIS WAS AN EXCELLENT BOOK. THE BEN KINKAID SERIES HAS REALLY BEEN ENJOYABLE. IF YOU HAVE NOT READ THEM, I SUGGEST YOU GO BACK TO THE START, PRIMARY JUSTICE, AND READ EACH BOOK IN ORDER. WILLIAM BERNHARDT IS A GREAT WRITER WITH A FANTASTIC SENSE OF HUMOR. I REALLY ENJOY HIS BOOKS.

Even from the beginning, upon reading the synopsis, I was to intrigued to put the book down for long. Hate Crime reeled me in perfectly: hook, line, and sinker.
