It is too bad men like Garrett and his brothers exist only in Linda Lael Miller's imagination. Garrett's too good to be true. A rich, educated, handsome, Porsche-driving cowboy who falls in love with Julie's 4 yr old son and 3-legged dog as much as with her.
Where were men like this when I was a young single mother? In my imagination. It's a refreshing change from testosterone-overloaded Seal-types from Suzanne Brockmann and genetically enhanced or vampires from Christine Feehan, but I thoroughly enjoyed Garrett and Julie. I am a fan of stories that connect family characters, and the McKettrick clan
have been a very nice escape!
I've never met a Linda Lael Miller man I didn't like, nor have I ever not read a book of hers that I didn't like a lot. I appreciate the great sex that leaves a lot more to my imagination than to the written word, too. I know the sex was excellent, but I appreciate the fact that it's not so graphic that I'd be embarrassed to carry this book to my Sunday school class.
I'm waiting for Austin and Paige, last of the trilogy. Their story is working up to being another fun read.

This is the second in the McKettricks of Texas series.
I was only so-so on this book. I liked it well enough, but I didn't find myself really feeling the building of the relationship between Garrett and Julie. It focused a lot on Julie and not much on Garrett. What was focused on Garrett didn't seem to have enough depth. The time they spent together really didn't seem to have much depth. I was hoping for a little more romance and connection with them.
I'm also a stickler for consistency. In Tate's book, specific ages and age differences were never mentioned for the siblings. In this book, it was noted that each set of siblings are 1 year apart and they are the same ages (28, 29, 30). This does not work with one statement in Tate's book about Libby & Tate's age differences, "When Libby was fifteen and Tate was seventeen." They could not be 2 years apart at any time--I could see 16 & 17, but not 15 & 17. Just a minor editing miss.
It is not necessary to have read Tate's story, but it will add more to the story if you have read it. There is more lead-in to the next book about Austin and Paige. I have to admit that I am most interested in their story and hope that it lives up to the build up in the first two books.
I received this book from netgalley.com.

When his boss becomes involved in a messy scandal, Garrett begins to evaluate his political ambitions. He decides to return home to the Silver Spur Ranch, and sees his brother Tate mellowed out from his forthcoming marriage to Libby. Since Libby's sister, Julie, is temporarily staying at the ranch with her son Calvin, Garrett renews his acquaintance with her, too. Then things start to heat up.
Cattle-rustlers are killing and stealing part of their herd. Brother Austin arrives home for a hiatus from his bronco-busting. And Julie's ex-husband decides to make an appearance and get to know his son. All of these things add to the excitement of the book. But then something happens to Garrett's ex-boss, and he's forced to make a decision about his future. The political arena or the ranch?
I enjoyed this book. Especially the interaction between the three brothers. The third book, about Austin, is being released in July, 2010. I'm looking forward to it!

I love anything that Linda Lael Miller writes and this book did not disappoint. I will admit to enjoying Tate's story a little more than Garrett's, but I will still interested in the story and how Garrett and Julie finally came together. A great book.
I have a love/hate relationship with Miller. This one fits into the blah category. Half way through the book I was wondering why I was forcing myself to labor through it. I decided to stop reading because there are just better books out there to spend my time on, some of them by Miller even. It's not her worse work, it's just very boring.
Great author. Looking forward to reading more from this author.
Very Good!
good story.
I agree with some of the other reviewers... this book was "so-so". It was definitely not LLM's best work. It seems like she's riding more on her name to sell books than the actual content of her work.
While it wasn't horrible, the story was sweet almost to the point of a toothache. The "action scenes" from the cattle rustling problems & the senator's love scandal didn't really seem all that exciting to me. The author seemed to kind of stick them in there, rather than making them a part of the story, and the problems would "pop back in" every few chapters, almost like LLM said, "Oh, yeah... I've got to mention this again!" Garrett also seemed awfully cheerful for a guy who just had his whole career torn apart from a scandal and had to change everything in his life.
Julie & Garrett's romance felt more like a thing of convenience without a whole lot of chemistry... you're here, I'm here... you have a kid too... ok... ready-made family!
While I still like this author's older works, I think her newer stuff has just gone from my "must have" list to my "when I get the time" list. I'll probably finish out this series, but sadly, I think she's run out of good ideas.

Yet another great read from Linda Lael Miller!
Garrett McKettrick is quite a catch, however his whole life is involved with politics. His brothers run the ranch and he only visits occasionally. When his political mentor has a major break from reality, Garrett returns to the ranch to clear his head. In steps Julie, his former high school nemesis and the sparks fly. 5 stars.
I got this book for someone else so can only say she said she liked it.
