Really enjoyed this one. The epilogue was a little too "canned" and Pollyannaish, but otherwise, it was a book of likeable, believable characters.

Inventive story line, and quite well written. This story included lots of humor, a little tasteful sex, and a peppy, though, of course, predictable plot. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this, and I think I read it in one day.

Grade B:

Cornelia Case wants nothing more than to escape her life in the public eye. After her husband, the president of the United States was assassinated Cornelia longs to experience the ordinary. She manages to disguise herself and elude the secret service men tasked with her safety. On her adventure she meets up with Matt Jorvich who finds himself the guardian to two children Lucy and Button. Lucy at 14 whose Mother recently died has been raising Button by herself. Cornelia finds herself on a journey with the Jorvich to find the girls' grandmother. Along the way Cornelia finds herself part of a family.

First Lady was an enjoyable read. I thought the characters were endearing. The adventures they found themselves in were fun to listen to. First Lady isn't my favorite book by SEP. I can't really put my finger on why. I enjoyed the characters. Although I thought maybe towards the end that Cornelia and Matt were extremely stubborn in their resistance to their feelings for one another, Matt especially about having a family. If they would have just talked about things, misunderstandings could have been avoided. I know this review is short, but I just don't have much more to say about it. I enjoyed the story, but it wasn't my favorite by SEP. That about sums it up for me.

*Interesting factoid:* Lucy makes an appearance in SEPs latest release Call Me Irresistible as Teddy Beaudines fiancé.

As a rule, I do not read romance novels. I picked this book up because the title caught my attention. From the beginning it was a page turner. The story is about someone having the most glamorous job (position) in the world but doesn't want it. She is a virtual prisoner in the White House and devises a means of escape and heads across the country with the secret service and FBI searching for her. She meets a man with two children he doesn't want and by joining him continues to elude her destiny. You realize that before the book ends she will fall in love with the children and with him. Yet even knowing this, the book keeps your attention. Since reading the book, I have become an avid Susan Elizabeth Phillips fan and have now read all of her books.

Good story. . . the "good life" may not always be as good as it seems. Interesting development of story and changes in each life.

Book Description:

The beautiful young widow of the President of the United States thought she was free of the White House, but circumstances have forced her back into the role of the First Lady. Not for long, however, because she's made up her mind to escape -- if only for a few days -- so she can live the life of an ordinary person. All she needs is the perfect disguise...and she's just found it. As an entire nation searches for her, the First Lady teams up with an infuriatingly secretive, quietly seductive stranger and two adorable little orphaned girls in need of a family. And all together they head out across the heartland chasing their own American Dream--on a wild journey, adventure, and glorious rebirth.

The secret service is looking for her...when are they going to catch up to her? I didn't want to put the book down because I was waiting for the answer to that question. Good book! I recommend it!

Wonderful book. I liked the way Mat didn't sugarcoat his feelings toward the girls. The way he referred to the baby as Demon and Lucy as the teenager from hell. He wasn't all mushy. Yet, beneath his big gruff exterior, he truly cared about the children. He and Nealy make a great pair. I certainly wouldn't like to live with so much public exposure. This was really an eye opener about how celebraties are treated.

I absolutely loved everything about this book. Nobody, and I mean NOBODY writes quite like SEP. Her characters in this story are so multidimensional, you forget they are made up people. And the plot kept me turning pages into the wee morning hours. She is the best romance writer I've ever read. And I read 'em all!

The human and family dynamics were so wonderfully portrayed that I actually cried during several passages! A nice change of pace having a book focus on the vital need for the ordinary in life...and the comforts of family.

This is a fantastic tale of a famous American politician's wife, who goes "missing" on her own accord & hooks up with an instant family. It's funny, poignant & full of HOT moments.

I didn't finish this one because I couldn't stand Cornelia or Mat. I liked Lucy and Button but they weren't enough to carry the book for me. He was the biggest jerk in the world, especially towards the kids. Just because he has spent all his time raising his sisters doesn't mean he has to make Lucy do all the work of taking care of Button. It's hard to be respectful of Cornelia when she pretty much spends all her time being someone else's puppet. I really wanted to revoke her girl card because she was so pathetic. I know in the end she finds her voice, or at least I hope so but the road trip antics wasn't enough to keep my interest. I miss the humor and silliness that makes a typical Phillips book worthwhile.
