The second book of the Outlander series, this one was tough to get into and very misleading in the beginning. I was sucked in after a few chapters though, and had a tough time thinking about anything else until I finished it.

This is the second book in the 'Outlander' series. I enjoyed it even more than the first. It starts out 20 years after Claire returns to her own time, when her husband passes away she takes her daughter back to Scotland and tells her the full story. The book also returns back to the time when Claire was with Jamie, and explains how it is that she came to return to her own time, carrying his child. I had an extremely hard time putting it down, and I cannot wait to read the next in the series!

I've read the entire series by Diana Gabaldon to date. Bought some of the books and reposted them on paperback swap and have two or three on Nook. Having loved it so much decided I wanted the series in my bookcase and am waiting for a couple more to arrive at this point. The series took me a year to read but it's wonderful! It's not *trashy* type romantic fiction. That being said, in the earlier books there are few descriptive love scenes when Jaime and Claire were a young married couple. But hey, they're young, in love and married after all! As the series progresses and the couple ages there's less and less of that. The author's writing style changes slightly in the second half of the series maybe as a result of her becoming more mature. There is a bit of taking the Lord's name in vain here and there by Jamie and Claire which may have been common for that time but don't know. It could have been left out or maybe the word damn used instead. It's fiction after all and I wasn't saying it myself so chose to continue and am glad I did. If you are a prude and religious, maybe forgo the books. Or, read the first couple and decide for yourself. All in all a very enjoyable Sottish fiction series including love, war, time travel. You will become lost in it.
PS - The "Into the Wilderness" series by Sara Donati is very, very, good and highly recommended! It's in my bookcase as well.

An incredible series (started with "Outlander"), the author weaves a tale of past and present, love and loss with such creativity and wisdom that you absolutely picture yourself amongst the characters. Sweeping romance scenes that truly move you to want to hop on a plane to Scotland ... big book, but the pages seem to fly by.

This is book two of a six (so far book series). Great story. Not a story with back and forth time travel every chapter.

This is the second in the Outander series. As good as the first. You can't beat this series for time travel romance and history. Loved it! These are keepers for me.

While I totally enjoyed the first book, I couldn't even finish this one. The story line is fairly good but I found the characters just grated on me after awhile. I realize I'm in the minority here, but it should've stopped at Outlander and left well enough alone.

This is the greatest series of books ever. Filled with romance, action, and adventure. A non-stop page turner, I can't put them down.

A difficult book to get through but ultimately worthwhile. I had put it down when a friend told me that this was her favorite book in the series so I forced myself to finish. I am very glad I did.
It isn't that the story isn't compelling or well written, it is that you know, based on the start of the book, how it will end. So by halfway through, you are just waiting for bad, sad, depressing stuff to happen. And yes, it does. But lots and lots of amazing things happen and the intensity and beauty of the relationship between Claire and Jamie is almost unparalleled.

This is the second book in the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon and I think it was even better than the first. If you have not read this series - you should take a trip to a closing Borders and get it at a discount.
This book begins with a Claire that is 20 years older and her daughter's trip to Scotland (circa 1968) where Claire tells Brianna about the circumstances of her birth and her father, Jamie. Yay! I was so excited for this, but was totally disappointed in Brianna's reaction. What a total moper. Jamie is possibly one of the most attractive male characters that I've read about since Gabriel Allon (Daniel Silva fans, please stand up). Who wouldn't be happy to have Jamie as their dad? Hello, Brianna - you don't know what great news this really is!

Good read. Good romance, good sex. Enjoy!
This is book 2 in the Outlander series. I thought it was a very good read - lots of twists and turns that I didn't see coming. I could have done without the parts at beginning and end about Brianna and Roger. The 1700s part of the story is the best! Once you get past the first part about Claire returning to Scotland, it turns into a great book. I can't wait to read the next in the series.
i love this series. can't rate it high enough. i am now listening to it on cd and I'm just in love with the characters. i can't wait to go to work everyday (i listen at work) to listen to jamie and claire's adventures.

What an excellent continuation of Outlander! I had thought that the story would drag on, having been told in the first book and continued in this one, but it did not. Diana Gabaldon writes in such a way that I feel like I'm in old Highland Scotland, myself, and am part of the Fraser clan. A very, very wonderful book.

I I loved the continuation of the outlander but fast forward 20 years.
Love, love, love this series! However this book caused me quite a bit of heartache. I recommend you have the third in the series, Voyager, prior to finishing this one. You will want to dive right into it! Overall the book was excellent! I love it when a story grabs me mentaly and emotionally as this series has...
Book 2 in the Outlander series continues to follow Claire Bauchamp's journey back in time and her relationship with Highlander Jamie Fraser. Claire tells her story to her daughter throughout the book, and the book ends with a twist -- the past isn't how Claire has always thought it was.
I loved the first book in this series, and was a little disappointed with how slow the second book was at the start, but I was hooked about a quarter of the way though. There is less action in this book, but more political intrigue, and the scene is set for book 3. It's a long book, but the entertaining plot makes for a quick read once you get into it.

Second in the Outlander series and just as excellent as the first! Don't be fooled when you start to read it: you think you are reading them in the wrong order. The opening is a little misleading. But never fear, you are reading the book that comes after Outlander. Hang on and enjoy the ride. Ms. Gabaldon sets it all straight as Jamie and Claire set off to try to keep the massacre at Culloden from happening. Lots of intrigue and fantastic historical insight. Ms. Gabaldon does not disappoint! Beautifully written! This is my favorite series, no mistake!
I love this series by Gabaldon. I have to say it is my most favorite series ever!!!! Maybe because I love anything Gaelic or Scotish.
This ia the second book and it is really great! Romance/ history and time travel all in one
My absolute, most favorite series in the world ever! She writes such beautiful, haunting books that have adventure, romance, intrigue, travel, history...you name it, it's in it! She makes me laugh, cry and hope that all of her books won't ever end.
I cannot tell you how many times over the years that I have found myself wondering about Claire and Jamie as if they were personal friends of mine instead of characters in a book.

Not as good as the first book. Had a few pages that I felt could have been left out. It was like the author was just trying to fill space. Overall, still like it.
It was exciting all the way to the end.
I really liked this one. Almost as good as Outlander, likeable characters. I recommend it.
Fast Paced, high energy, page turner. I'm loving this series. Love the way she incorporates the Scottish phrases, and even the French phrases, into the story. ONe of the better ones of the series.
Quite a disappointment after the first book, but scanning it you can figure out where Claire and Jamie are and then get on with book 3!
I love the Outlander story! am reading this series for the second time, which started 20 years ago. This is the second book continuing the love story of Claire and Jamie Fraser in the early 1700s. But not just a love story. The author has done extensive research to give the reader the flavors of the time in history. I look forward the next installment!
Was a great story overall, however, it was more difficult to stay "into" the book compared wtih the first "Outlander".
I am absolutely addicted to Diana Gabaldon's books. This book was just as good as Outlander.
Book two in a series. This follows OUTLANDER. A continuation in the story of Scotland's ancient lore. The original character is now joined by her daughter who will now be tested in a legacy of blood and desire in the doomed Highland uprising. This saga gets better and better with each novel. A story of time travel. A woman's version of history. This is a riveting historical novel with some modern romance to add to the entertainment! The next book to follow in this series is: VOYAGER. Once you get started, you will have to read them all-I did!
Wonderful sequal to The Outlander! Not as much action as the first, but leaves you ready for book # 3.
Children of main characters in book #1 add an interesting twist in this book. Makes you wonder how true our own perceived version of the past may actually be.

Note: Comments on the audiobook narrated by Davina Porter are at the end of this review.
I wasn't as impressed with Dragonfly in Amber as I was with Outlander. Though I enjoyed it, I did have a few issues with it.
The political intrigue was too much. It was well researched, I appreciate Gabaldon's ability to put her characters into a more-or-less historically accurate conflict and I did enjoy the overarching story, but the time in France dragged. Once the story moved on into Scotland, it picked up quite a bit and I didn't want to put it down, but until then I wasn't driven to be reading it all the time.
The viewpoints changed quite a bit during the story, which was both distracting and disorienting. In 1968 we have Claire's first-person narration and a third-person narration centered on Roger that allows us to get inside his head a bit and get a perspective of Claire outside of her head. In the 1700s it is primary Claire's first-person narration with some odd third-person narrations. Including a third-person narration in which 'he [Jamie] is thinking about his wife [Claire],' a scene where I had to rewind to see who he and his wife were.
I'll definitely continue with the series, I hear Voyager is better than Dragonfly in Amber, so we'll see. :)
AudioBook Review
Another excellent performance by Davina Porter. She has great talent for accents and voices, which bring each character alive. The only oddity was her Brianna's American accent.
The only problem with this audiobook was in the shifting perspectives; it was difficult at times to grasp who was speaking or who's point of view the story was in.

Terrific book. I am keeping this one.
2nd book in the Outlander series. Fantastic book and series!
Love this series!
This book is so amazing, and heart breaking, and just wow. I can't tell you how many times I've read it and each time it just hooks me and I can't put it down.
A wonderful read. I turned to it several times a day. Gabaldon is an artful writer, crafting vivid characters, while weaving an adventure -- and a love story -- on a grand, timeless scale.
I've read the first 3 books in this series. Books 1 and 3 are fabulous, this one is too dark and dreary. It drags on.
I have fallen in love with the Outlander series. The stories are easy to get into and are vivid and entertaining. I love the characters and the historic aspect. Sometimes love stories become far-fetched and silly-not these books.
I look forward to reading the rest!
I look forward to reading the rest!
When I started this series I thought it would be less sex and more history. But I do like the Scottish culture and find myself still reading. could do without some of the graphic sex scenes.
Outstanding read. Enjoy the historical facts mixed in with the characters in this book.
Really good series (this is the 2nd book). I enjoyed it verra much (as Jamie would say), but be prepared to slog through some slow spots. In the end, quite worth it.
Loved this book! Can't wait to read the rest of this series - I'm hooked!
I started with the first book Outlander and was hooked!
Dragonfly in Amber was just as good, I could not put the book down. Happy reading!

This book is as good as the first book but could use a bit more editing. She over explains a bit.
Absolutely LOVED the first book of the Outlander series, but this one was so much about the war. I couldn't keep track of who was fighting who, who supported who, but I have faith that the rest of the series will be wonderful, so reading this book was just a stepping stone to the rest of the enchanting story of Jamie and Claire!
Very enjoyable book. Gives more detail to characters you get to know them differently than in the first book. Wonderful series of book. Very long but worth it. Leave yourself plenty of time to read you will want to stay up all night to finish it.
I startd with the first book in the series which is called Outlander. I have loved every page of this book and the others. Definitely recommend.
Fabulous! Don't let the beginning fool you - it IS the correct book, you did not miss anything. It begins slightly confusing, but keep reading and it will all make sense.
A slow start but once in it is a great sequel to Outlander.
Diana Gabaldon is one of my all time favorite authors.
For me, reading this was like trying to peer through dried cement. Never grabbed my interest enough to want to keep turning pages and looking at print.
The troubles continue for Jamie and Claire. This book starts out in the 1960's, the Claire tells her daughter about her adventures. Naturally, her daughter is a little upset. So we have to the story up to when Claire goes back-talk about having some explaining to do. As with all Outlander books, this is a long one, so set aside plenty of time to read.
If you like time travel and history this series is for you. 6 great books, you can really get to know the charaters.
One in a series that involves romance and time travel with Claire Randall who travels back in time and into the arms of gallant eighteenth-century Scot Jamie Fraser.
2nd of Diana Gabalon's Highlander saga. Awesome story!
This time-traveling romantic adventure will please fans who have been waiting for the further adventures of Dr. Claire Beauchamp Randall, a 20th-century American who goes to Scotland in search of her 18th-century husband, virile Scot Jamie Fraser, whom she met and married in Outlander ( LJ 7/91). Book 2 of a planned trilogy takes readers along on Randall's quest, as she hopes to find a state or time (like that of the title's dragonfly suspended in a piece of amber) where Fraser still exists.

For twenty years Claire Randall has kept her secrets. But now she is returning with her grown daughter to Scotland's majestic mist shrouded hills. Here Claire plans to reveal a truth as stunning as the events that gave it birth: about the mystery of an ancient circle of standing stones...about a love that transcensd the boundaries of time... and about James Fraser, a Scottish warrior whose gallantry once drew a young Claire from the security of her century to the dangers of his...
As usual, brilliantly written, wonderful characters and an intriguing plot. Diana G. is one of the best!
The story continues and good continuation.
This is from the the outlander series, I LOVED IT! It is a epic that sweeps us back in time to the drama and passion of the 18th-century sScotland. This is the third book in the series. For twenty years Claire has kept her secrets. But now she is returning with her grown daughter to Scotland's majestic mis-shrouded hills. Here Claire plans to reveal a truth as stunning as the events that gave it birth; about the mystery of an ancient circle of standing stones...about a love that transcends the boundaries of time...and about James Fraser. Ascottish warrior whose gallantry once drew a young Clair from the security of her century to the dangers of his. I visited Scotland after reading these books and can tell you it makes your heart beat faster when you see the Edinbougho castle that is built on a cliff just as the author describes it in her novels, I toured the castle and could almost hear the voices of Clair and Jamie. I had two copies of this book, that is why I am offering one here. These are my favorite books.
Never read it. Not interested. It was a birthday present and is brand new.
The incredible second novel in the saga! Gabaldon is truly amazing!
I bought it in an airport store hoping it would be sexy and fun. It wasn't either, but it was interesting anyway.
what a great book!
The second in Dianna Gabaldon's series. I have yet to find anyone that's tried these books and doesn't enjoy them! I'm not much into historical romance but I love this series!
I couldn't stop reading!
Second in the series and absolutely wonderful! The characters are so very true to life and the historical info is so greatly detailed. This is one of my all-time favs--I read the series at least once every year or so...
By the time I was 20 pages in, I was completely hooked -- couldn't put it down for any longer than I absolutely had to. The characters - scots, french, english, all - are vibrant and the world feels quite real. The tone and voice are singular: I cried and frequently laughed out loud. It's hard not to love "Red Jamie" and little Fergus, despite how far removed they are from my reality. It's a good thing I started this friday night and finished it late sunday - I'm not sure I could have gone about my week without having finished!
Great book!!!!
A must read in the series by Diana Gabaldon -- but be sure you read Outlander first! I thoroughly enjoyed it and am looking forward to the continuing saga of this family through the ages!
Second book in the Outlander series. Great characters and story. Some parts drag a bit. Overall a really good book. I do want to keep reading this series to find out what happens to these characters. You definitely get attached to them!

Fantastic continuation of the Outlander series
A total page turner! One of those books where you tell yourself "ah just another few minutes of reading then I'll go to bed" and next thing you know its 3am and you wonder where the time flew to!
This is the second book in Gabaldon's wonderful series with Claire and James. It's a magnificent epic that sweeps us back in time to the drama and passion of 18th-century Scotland.
The second installment of a wonderful series. I highly recommend escaping with Claire and Jamie as often as possible.

Another great installment in the Outlander series! Gabaldon has done it again. Great read!
The continuation of the saga of Jamie Frazer and Claire Randall who were caught in a time travel . If you read OUTLANDER, this is the sequal.I couldnt put it down.Next to the OUTLANDER this book is outstanding.
Great book. Diana Gabaldon's characters are loveable or hateable, but definitely fascinating.
Great book. Had read the collection of 8 books in the past & swapped them for other books. Wanted to re-read when the TV series started to see how close the series was to the books.
DG is the best!!
great book took me awhile to read it, not a book to skim through either, cause you just might miss something that ties the books/story together.
great book
When I first opened the book I was heartbroken and angry, and I put the book down for about a week. Then I couldn't stand it anymore and picked it back up, and read non-stop until I was through. I really love this series! I get so emotionally involved; she has a way of writing that just draws you in and makes you live the story.
Not quite finished, this is a great series...can't wait until the 3rd book.

Beautiful story
After watching 2 seasons of Outlander and loving the story, I wanted to try reading the book series. I am just completing Dragonfly in Amber and have enjoyed it

The saga of Claire and Jamie continues as the Jacobite rebellion moves closer to the final debacle at Culloden, and the couple tries desperately to change history.
Gabaldon has a great way of describing all parts of the book in great detail.
The first 500 pages of so of this book absolutely bored me!!! I almost gave up, but I stuck with it because I had to know what happened between Claire and Jamie and now I'm really looking forward to starting the next one.
Excellent!
