***Story centers around a family with a college-aged daughter who finds herself mixed up with extream environmentalist fanatics and then dead. The story examines the idea of a "divide" both literally and figuratively. I enjoyed the book. I felt I could relate to the daughter in the way it's easy to get caught up in radical ideas as a young and naive college girl. And also I could relate to the married couple and the way life comes in and "divides". Easy read.

Nicholas Evans writes good stories with interesting themes. This book is about a married couple with two teenage children, a boy and a girl. From all appearences they were happily married buth husband decides to leave his family and later takes up with another woman. This leaves the wife to struggle with life and the raising of two teenages. The daughter runs away with an ecoterrorist and gets herself involved in corporate burnings and bombings to save the enviroment. However, one incident goes badly and they are forced to go on the run and be charged with murder. The daughter is subsequently found dead by two skiers frozen in a creek in the mountains of Montana. How did she die, and what was the trail of events that led this golden child of a loving family to go tragically astray. The trials and tribulations of passions and needs and dashed hopes and disillusionments all connect in this story. A good read.

Sometimes this book was difficult to read having been through some trials with my own teenage daughter. I feel very fortunate that mine came through it alive and well. The characters were very real to me in how they all handled the tragedies they were faced with. I think I'm ready to read something light and funny after this one!

This was an incredible story about a family dealing with tragedy. It was written backwards, so you learn how everything came to be. Even though this was a novel, I thought it was so well-written that I couldn't put it down.

Good characters with lots of layers. Very enjoyable.

This book was pretty good. A friend recommended it to me because we lived in Missoula Montana & a large portion of the book takes place there. It was a fairly quick read for me. The characters are lovable and relatable and you really feel for their struggles. Evans makes even the bad parts of people understandable. The book showcases the good and evil in all of us. The story is interesting and intruiging and it's written backwards and throughout the story you find out what happened to the family. It was a little dark, but not too much. The story was very intruiging and original.
You know how you hear stories on tv about horrible things that happen to families? This is like hearing the story from the family's point of view. It's very interesting. I recommend it.

Great book! The characters really came alive. I could not put this book down.

Loved this book. Better than his "Horse Whisperer"

A compelling mystery set in the great west by the author of the Horse Whisperer. This is a real page turner.

Excellent book!!! Of course I read his other books starting with "The Horse Whisperer". "The Loop" got me interested in wolves. This started with the discovery of a body frozen in the ice of a creek. Then the explanation begins with what happens at a dude ranch one summer and takes it from there. You get to know the main characters really well and there is a twist in the end. I couldn't wait to pick up the book and start reading again. I recommend it.
This book is good, but not as good as The Horsewhisperer. I thought that the author spent too much time on the back history and not enough details at the end.
All in all, the book was good, but I wouldn't put it in my top 20.

It took several pages for me to get interested then I couldn't lay it down.
I was really looking forward to reading this book as I had loved The Loop and The Horse Whisperer. Maybe it was because I had loved Evans' other books but I was disappointed in The Divide. It was a good story with an interesting beginning but there weren't many characters that I identified with or really liked. It was worth reading and the storytelling was interesting because the book started with the end result and then told how that result occurred. I was just anticipating more, I guess.

Nicholas Evans keeps you in suspense throughout the book. His mind must run in circles all the time in order to figure out his plots and his endings. Incredible writer.

This is a beautifully written novel and everything a reader could want! It is fantastic and I suggest that you read it!

Although this was a great book, it was quite depressing, in the same vein as other Nicholas Evans novels. Not much hope, really, but still a good read.

From the author of The Horse Whisperer. Family strife and tragedy played against the backdrop of Montana and Wyoming. City folks in the country.

Nicholas Evans applies his skills to mystery and realities of divorce and teen-aged children. Very refreshing look at the way things are and how people deal with them and each other.

This is a well written book, however it is frequently depressing in the story line.
This book was a very good read! The author is a great writer and makes one think about some difficult issues.
Good story but sad
I thought this was a great story. Very hard to put down!
When two back-country skiers discover the body of a young woman, frozen into a high-country Montana stream, the corpse is quickly identified as that of an ecoterrorist and accused murderer long sought by the FBI.
But how Abbie Cooper got there is another story indeed; one that reaches back miles and years and through the tangled history of one family.
Evans does a great job keeping things moving, and creates characters who are compelling even when they aren't being particularly likeable.

Nicholas Evans is one of my favorite authors. His writing is so engaging, I find myself lost in his books as well as thinking about them when I'm not reading.

Good Book but was a little drawn out until about three quarters thru the book.
Started off interesting, skiers find frozen body in snow, but ambles on into too many names and hard to keep track.
Didn't finish it.

EXCELLENT!!
Evans, author of "The Horse Whisperer," tells the story of an American family torn apart by differences and put back together with love.
The story starts out with a dead body; then the rest of the book is the backstory about who that person was and how they ended up where they were found. The characters are well-written -- you feel like you really 'know' each of them well, and the book moves at a good pace without any long, boring descriptive passages.
This one kept me turning pages
The Divide is another great read form Nicholas Evans!
Tried to get into this book and couldn't.
This book was really good although hard to start (for me). It took me about two-thirds of the way in to finally feel like I couldn't put it down. It is my first Evans book.
Another of Nicholas Evans example of good writing.
Intense book that I enjoyed reading despite the knots it tied in my gut.
When tragedy strikes Benjamin and Sara Cooper's family, they begin to look back over the years that led to their separation and the destruction of their family.
Very good!
A story of a family searching for their lost happiness. Children impacted by separation and divorce.
Another great one by Nicholas Evans (of The Horse Whisperer and Smoke Jumper).
Heartbreaking, sad and, yet, inspiring, hopeful.
This book started a little slow but I'm glad I continued to read it... a very good book. A story of an ordinary family and unforseen heartache.
Another triumph for Nicholas Evans! Not the same feeling as The Loop or Horse Whiperer, but still a great read.
Author of "The Horse Whisperer," writes another novel about a family fractured by betrayal. A found body at The Divide, changes their lives forever.
One great read. Could not put it down. The author as usual has written to keep you interested. Love the way Nicholas Evans writes.
This ISBN based description calls this a hardcover, but it isn't. If it makes a difference it is an unedited proof.
I really enjoyed this book - almost as much as The Horse Whisperer.
A FEMALE BODY FOUND EMBEDED IN A REMOTE MOUNTAIN FROZEN CREEK. FROM THE MOUNTAINS TO NEW YORK, EVANS TAKES YOU ON AN EMOTIONAL AND MYSTERIOUS JOUNEY. A GREAT AUTHOR
If you like the Horse Whisperer you will like this
The Divide was a place that seemed to want to keep itself secret. It perched concealed at the head of a split and tortuous valley that descended to another far grander. Montana had ritzier ranches, with finer cuisine and glitzier guests. But there were few, if any, so beautiful. Its guests came by word of mouth and returned again and again. And thus it was with the Cooper family. For the last 2 weeks in June, they always took cabins six and eight. This was their 4th visit and it would be their last, the vacation that would change their lives forever.
One of those novels you can't put down.
This is a truly memorable tale of a man and his needs for love. His idolized daughter's anger and self destruction. A vivid revelation of want vs duty. Clever story that brings both understanding and empathy for each of the four family members. Teenage angst and love in all it's forms. Truly engaging audio presentation. The reader is the best, Scott Brick. 14 hours and 12 discs.
Great read. Could'nt put it down
This was not my type of book.
A well written, good story.
Quite the page turner.
A really good read..
