While not my favorite of my series so far, this one still kept me hooked. The dissolution of the relationship between Bill and Sookie is heartbreaking. One note about this book - it mentions events that will have you wondering if you missed a book in the series. Take it from me, you didn't. The events mentioned take place in the short story, "One Word Answers" by Charlaine Harris. This story appeared in the Bite anthology (I believe) but can be found in other places (nudge, nudge, wink, wink). Read it first so you don't think you're losing your mind! :)

Definitely the best so far in the entire series. Quinn is hot and sexy (although annoying in his constant use of "Babe" -- doesn't he know that word is now reserved for Ranger?), Bill is in the background, and there are new faces to compliment the old gang.

Best of all, this is laugh-out-loud funny. This is the first book in the series I've been able to say this about, and I'm darn glad to be able to.

This book answers a lot of questions that the first few books open up and leave hanging, and ties up many loose ends. It is definitely a book to read before "giving up" on the series as it seems many PaperBackSwappers are doing. In this book, Sookie travels to New Orleans to clean out her Cousin Hadley's apartment; to not give too much up with this, we meet New Orleans witches, find out what Sookie really is, and revisit Debbie Pelt's family. It was a very enjoyable read!

I have thoroughly enjoyed this series, including this book, but felt it was the weakest so far. While not graphic in the way of LKH (something for which I am grateful), Sookie's lovelife has taken some confusing twists and turns, not all for the better. I also found this book to be overly concerned with "getting everyone in" to the point that some characters felt like they were simply doing cameos to make sure they weren't forgotten. Still, nicely done, a well structured mythos, light and funny - a must for series fans, for new readers, start at the beginning - there are revelations in this book that will undermine your enjoyment of earlier books.

Sookie has the go ahead to go to New Orleans to clean out her cousin Hadley's apartment, however it not as simple as sorting thru her things⦠But someone is doing just about anything, including committing murder, to keep Sookie from claiming her inheritance. Did Hadley have some skeletons in her closet? Who is stopping Sookie from going to New Orleans and why? On top of everything else, the Pelts are again questioning Sookie about their daughter Debbie's disappearance, Eric is insisting upon taking her to a vampire council meeting and some Weres may want her dead.

This book take several twist and turns, the first hundred or so pages seem to be reentering persons from the previous books⦠I really thought we would see more of Sookie's love life from where book 5 left offâ¦. Ms Harris seems to have decided that Sookie needed to end previous chapters in her life before proceeding into a new one. So it off to read book 7 to see where the love life will go⦠No matter what Book 6 is another great one for Ms Harrisâ¦

I'll be honest with you guys. If this had been the first or second book that I read in the series, I wouldn't have continued. Though it was good, I gave it a lot more credit because I already know and love the characters. If Definitely Dead were my introduction to the Sookie Stackhouse world, I wouldn't have thought twice about not picking up the next book. Don't get me wrong, Definitely Dead is a good book, it just isn't the type of book that would capture my attention and make want to read again.

A lot of the book just seemed to be... out of character. Sookie is slowly exiting the world of being your average every day telepathic waitress who is cutely modest to being a supervixen special something who has all the guys stare when she flips her hair. And Bill did a total 180. Only Eric was the same, which was a relief because I would take it too hard if he changed at all.

It is disappointing that there is such an influx of new characters because the old characters, the ones I enjoy, are being pushed to the wayside. I don't need a whole new league of witches and boyfriends and vampire buddies to enjoy The Southern Vampire Mysteries. I just want to read about the world of Sookie and her close companions. Adding too many characters makes things overly complex and complicated. Of course, fresh blood is necessary to keep a book active, and new people are always coming and going in life, but within the limited confines of a book they only end up pushing out other characters since only so many can be in focus at a time.

Also, a word of warning. If you've ONLY read the books, you will be confused. If this book is to make sense to you from the start, I suggest you read the short story One Word Answer from Bite. The events of that story come to fruition in Definitely Dead and are unfortunately never mentioned anywhere else. So, if you haven't read One Word Answer, you are going to be very confused about Hadley and the Queen and the Queen's request. It doesn't make sense that the story wasn't included as a prelude or a first chapter, but I suppose it makes more money selling in parts.

I have high hopes for the next one and can only cross my fingers that Sookie and her world will return to how it was when I fell in love with it. I want Sookie to go back to being a normal girl with a special gift, not some half-supernatural creature like everyone else. How can I relate to her that way? And I want more of the old characters, more Eric and Bill and Sam.

This is the third of this series I've read. I read #1 and #4 well before seeing True Blood. Now that I'm all caught up on the TV show, I thought I'd see how they compare. My first impression, when I first started watching the show, is that it was much more serious in tone than the books. However, I feel that the show has gotten a bit sillier as it's gone on, and now they're much more evenly matched.
Reading this, there was a weird mix of spoilers, things that happened differently in the show, and things that already happened - the show isn't following the books religiously. However, I do feel that it's captured the spirit if the writing.
These aren't Great Books - but I did very much enjoy reading this. It's fun, light paranormal romance.

We are spreading out Sookies world by adding more characters and plots, and it is not a bad thing. Sookie as always finds danger around every corner, and somehow gets through it. The question at the end of every book is, who will Sookie date now? I like that, makes me want to keep reading!

I've never watched the HBO series, and I don't plan on it anytime soon. I've loved the book series so much, the TV show is guaranteed to disappoint me.

The 1st book made me fall for Sookie and her men, and after I finished it, I immediately ordered every other book in the series. I just finished Dead in the Family (Book 9, I believe?) and I can't wait until Charlaine publishes her next one. I hope they go on for at least several more. I'm so involved in these books that when I finish one, I don't read anything else for days so I can just think about the one I've finished.

And I'm very much Team Eric.

It's more of the same, but that's okay, because with this series more of the same is definitely not a bad thing. I have to admit, this one was slightly less predictable than the last few, since I'm so used to the pattern that I had those ones figured out well in advance. With this one, I figured out some of it, but didn't see the rest coming. In any case, these books are so much fun to read that it doesn't even matter to me if I can figure the ending out early. The journey getting to that point is too entertaining. If you liked the others in the series, you'll enjoy this one as well. If you haven't read them yet though, you really should start with the first one. Even if you've seen the TV show, there's so much new and different stuff in these, you can't pick up a later book and just know everything that's going on.

A better edited Sookie Story than some of the earlier works, but don't hold your breath if you're looking for romance from this series whose character seems to spend more time mad at old flames than flirting with new ones. I enjoy the magic and unpredictable story lines, but for romance - not so much.
If you haven't read the previous books it can be difficult to understand the comings and goings of all the various magical characters.
Hopefully in some future book Sookie's fairy godmother will be explained.

Don't think you're insane when you read this book if you know nothing about the murder they talk about in every chapter, but have already read books 1 through 5 cover to cover: there's a short story by Ms. Harris that deals only with that mystery! It's called One Word Answers, and you will need to find the .pdf online and read it before you read this otherwise absorbing entry in the most fun vampire series ever.

The book suffers from the absence of the key plotline described above, but is otherwise interesting and entertaining, like all the Sookie books.

As much as I love the story and characters, I really can't stand the writer's style. I am just completely annoyed with all the commercial references (walmart, anybody?), grammatical errors and the growing predictability and flow that has continued and even grown stronger throughout the series thus far. It also seems to me that Sookie's convictions are becoming more the "I think this way and it's not going to change, but I just don't seem to act that way anymore" kind and she is also becoming more scatterbrained in her internal dialogue. I am glad to be in the second half of the series... I want to know how Sookie's journey comes to an end but I will definitely not be reading anymore of this author's books.

I am so confused about the whole cousin thing. We have been with Sookie all along and we seem to have missed a major event in her life. Hadley dying and her death being avenged in front of Sookie.

I have all the books up to Dead in the family and I am just finishing this one and wonder if I should bother going on.

First Chalaine's books are too damn short. Just as you get into them they are ending ugh. I am used to books that are over 400 pages and at 600 they end.

Also I am noticing that as the books go on they are more boring. Does this have anything to do with the TV show? Cause I have not seen it yet.

I would rather have seen Kim Harrison's Hollows series as a series those are well rounded books that don't make you feel gyped i the end.

Excellent book. The 7th in the Sookie Stackhouse Southern Vampire mysteries. Reading the previous books isn't crucial but highly recommended!

Sookie finds out her Cousin Hadley has passed away and left her all her posessions. As per usual nothing ever goes smoothly where Sookie and Vampries are concerned, someone does not want Sookie to come to Mississippi where Hadley lived, mysterious attacks, secrets and disappearences abound. Many old characters make their appearances, Jason, Sam, Eric, Bill and Quinn to name a few as well as a few new characters.

This is book #6 of the Sookie Stackhouse series. Like the previous books this one is excellent and exciting. Sookie has to trave to New Orleans to settle her cousins state. Bill seems nervous and has convinced her to let him join her. There is a new man in her life and an old one who does not want to admit he is in love.Sookie meets the queen and discovers a heartbreaking secret that will change everything between her and Bill.

I highly recommed this book for any Sookie fan. Do not start here because it will be hard to follow.

As with all Charlaine Harris' Sookie Stackhouse books, this was frolicking good fun. This particular "episode" offers some new dimensions to what we know about Sookie, and adds to what she has "on her plate". Fom the interest of the magical and supernatural, this book also ups the ante and pushes us furthur into the power levels and structure. I leave the synopsis up to the book advertisement, so see jacket flap etc. As always, I recommend reading these novels in order of printing, but is enjoyable either way.

Sookie's cousin, Hadley, has died and left her everything. But claiming that inheritance has a high risk factor. While on a date, Sookie is attached by two Weres. Then Sookie finds a body in her cousin's closet, which just happens to come to life and attack her. Someone doesn't want Sookie looking into her cousin's past, and they're prepared to do anything to stop her.

This is the 6th book in the Southern Vampire series and it's still going strong. All the characters from past books make an appearance. I love how Charlaine Harris tells the story. Very funny. My rating: 5 stars.

Book six of a really fun series.

Sookie is off to New Orleans to clean out her cousin Hadley's old apartment, which will turn out to be more than just sorting through clothes and books. Hadley used to be the vampire Queen of Louisiana's consort, and some people don't want Sookie looking too deeply into Hadley's past or Hadley's possessions...

In book 5, I felt Harris had taken away from Sookie's character. She had left her more cynical and cranky. In book #6 it seems Sookie is back. The problems I had with the story was that one of the main points in the book was Sookie going to her cousin Hadley's apartment to take care of her things since her passing. When going through all of the explaining on Hadley's death and how Sookie came to be guardian of her stuff, I felt confused. I wondered if I was in a daze in reading the last book because I could not remember anything about that. Turns out (after reading other reviews) that all this info is in a short story that Harris produced seperately. I had no idea! Even without that information, I was able to follow along and keep going. I just wish I would have been made aware of the short story before hand. I am also starting to feel that there is a lot of flip flopping and wonder if there is an actual ending to this series. There are some series that last forever but they are also going somewhere and the ending is satisfying even though you might want more. Then there are some series that really have no where to go and keep going on and on and on. You finally just give up on them. I am hoping that this is not the case. I will be sticking with this series for a while because it is fun. I just hope it is worth the ride at the end.

This book was less than mediocre. Now that I've read all of the first six books that I wasted good money on in this series, I'll just be using credits or a local library to get the rest since I'm not on the edge of my seat needing to be mentally punished. I've learned my lesson and will no longer be buying more than half a series of books without having only bought at least the first one to read as a sample.

I just don't know how these can be considered a detective series when there's really not a lot of detecting, but mostly a lot of stumbling upon oddball problems and getting out of sticky situations at the last moment. Sookie is sometimes just such a moron that it's unrealistic that anyone like her could figure out the things she does on her own when it's been done without her telepathy.

A lot of times, I find it weird that people who know Sookie still consider her a freak when there's shows on TV like "Psychic Detective" and "Ghost Hunters" and other paranormal shows that are pretty popular. The series likes to use so many other modern aspects of our time that it's really strange that people wouldn't be proud of having a telepath in their community. They certainly know when to use her to their advantage.

The Wal-Mart plugs have gotten to be annoying throughout these books. I'm still trying to figure out if they're there more than other plugs because the A) author owns stock, B) want's a life-time discount, C) loves greedy corporate companies with poor health-care coverage for their employees, D) is stereo-typing some social class or another, E) is hoping they'll promote her book more or F) all of the above. Yes, I understand we all shop there, but they really don't need any more advertising. I really prefer authors who mention little mom and pop stores who can use the business.

We now also find out that Sookie has fairy blood in her. Even though, until this book, all these other supernatural beings hadn't smelled it on her before... plot holes drive me nuts.

So do grammatical errors. If I had a dollar for every one in this book alone, I'd buy a better series to read. Has the author ever taken any kind of writing class? Good grief, I'm this far through the series and she (or her editors) still hasn't figured out when you don't need a comma in a sentence. You have to unnecessarily pause so often while reading it's like driving down a long, busy street through town that has decided to put a stop sign at EVERY intersection when you're just trying to pass through.

I started reading this series because I'd had it around for more than a year collecting dust and then really enjoyed the "True Blood" series and was antsy and wanted to know what was going to happen next. Well, even though most of those questions were answered, the show is better. I really have tried to like this book series but it's just been one disappointment after another.
