Interesting historical mystery set in New England
It's 1836 in New Hampshire & the body of a beautiful young woman has been discovered on the farm of retired lawyer & military hero Josiah Beede. His search for the murdered takes him to a Manchester cotton mill, into the chilling new world of industry & manufacture, where young women work in slavelike conditions.

The first book in a historical mystery series that is set in 1836 New Hampshire starring Josiah Breede, a war hero and confidant of Andrew Jackson. Linsley weaves a lot of background on Beede into the story, creating a fully rounded, believable character. Also this book takes a damning look at the fabric industry, which made owners rich and employees sick. It sheds light on the economics of the cotton industry, relying on slave labor in the cotton fields and exploited labor in the mill, where the air was choked with fibers and employees were powerless to force changes. I would highly recommend this book because it has a great setting, suspenseful plot, and wonderful characterization.
This book starts off a little slow. I started getting into it after the events started to unfold. Wow what a turn of events. Not a bad read.
