A Travis McGee mystery. McGee moors his poker-prize houseboat in Bahia Mar, near Ft. Lauderdale. He is rugged, sentimental, fearless and flawed...the perfect private eye. In this one, he gets sucks into a case involving the family of a man killed in Vietnam and the treasure he may or may not have stashed somewhere. MacDonald keeps you riveted.

The Chicago Black Hawks' Boom Boom Warshawski had been a legend
own time. Over a thousand people attended his funeral, sad and sorry to hear he'd slipped off the wharf and drowned. The police are all too happy to call it an accident., And they don't like the idea of Boom Booms cousin, private investigator V.I. Warshawski, sticking her female nose in an obvious open-and shut case.
But between attempts on her life and shots of Scotch, the intrepid , witty Warshawski winds her way through a maze of grain elevators and thousand-ton freighters,, suspicious business men and gorgeous ballerinas She's hot on a trail that will tell whether she's taken the whoel thing tooo personally or her beloved Boom Boom has really been murdured.

book was a little slow to get going, but once it did, it was non stop! I esp. love how she wrote a scene where a ship blew up as she was on it. Great writting.

I love the Travis McGee novels! From the cover...One look at Cathy Kerr and you could tell there was nothing life hadn't done to her. She was innocence turned helpless desperation-all because of the smiling freckle-faced stranger named Junior Allen. Cathy had nowhere to turn-except to another smiling stranger, that man named Travis McGee-who was a walking pillar of cold rage as he followed the depraved wreckage of Junior Allen's trail.

Like all the McGee books, this is a well-written adventure story. Warning: he tends to include some very unpleasant villains, whose doings I would rather not have had to read about. The author was also of his generation, that is to say, a considerable sexist. So be warned.

Fans of Travis McGee will enjoy the series especially this book which I think is the first in the series about a beach bum who only works when he has to.

From Sara Paretsky, New York Times bestselling author, comes another V.I. Warshawski novel. When Chicago Black Hawks hockey legend Boom Boom Warshawski drowns in Lake Michigan, his private-eye cousin, the intrepid V.I. Warshawski, questions the accidental death report and rumors of suicide. Armed with a bottle of Black Label and a Smith and Wesson, V.I. follows a trail of violence and corruption to the center of the Windy City's powerful shipping industry. Dodging attempts on her life with characteristic grit and humor, V.I. wends her way through a maze of grain elevators and thousand-ton freighters to ferret out Boom Boom's killer.

I'd seen Paretsky's titles on the shelves for some time, but had not read any of her novels. That changed about five pages into DEADLOCK. A murder victim with the unlikely name Boom-Boom has met an untimely death---untimely, but convenient for a number of people. Odd and colorful characters abound, and they behave in all too human fashion.
Now I've made a list of the other V.I. Warshawski titles, and I plan to read them all.

From back cover: When Chicago Black Hawks hockey legend Boom Boom Warshawski slips off a wharf and drowns in Lake Michigan, his private-eye cousin questions the accidental death report and rumors of suicide. Armed with a bottle of Black Label and a Smith and Wesson, V.I. follows a trail of violence and corruption to the center of the Windy City's powerful shipping industry. Dodging elaborate attempts on her life with characteristic grit and humor, the one-of-a-kind detective wends her way through a maze of grain elevators and thousand-ton freighters, ruthless businessmen and gorgeous ballerinas to ferret out Boom Boom's killers... before they phase her out of the picture---permanently.

This is the first book I've read by this author. Since I'm a native of Chicago the streets the author mentioned in the book were familiar. So I enjoyed the book in that aspect. The story was different with a few characters to keep track of. I will read more books by this author.

Can't comment...I'm not a Warshawski fan. If you are and haven't read this one, you already know what to expect.
