A witch and a vampire end up as roommates and business partners for crime solving and/or bounty hunting.

PROS: This is a fun story and I enjoyed each of the characters. I do think the pixies sort of stole the show at times -- in a good way. The witch protagonist is far from perfect, and that makes her all the more likable. A great mix of characters. The end of the book leaves you wanting to know how the interpersonal relationships are going to flesh out. But the mystery/action loose ends are nicely tidied up.

CONS: I did take me a while to get into this one. The action was a little slow at times, but that didn't detract from a strong premise. Also, I felt a little lost in this world from time to time. Like I was coming in on the third book in a series. I still do not fully understand how vampires 'work' in this series.

First book in the Hollows series. Rachel Morgan is a bounty hunter for the I.S., an organization that polices fae creatures in an alternate Earth where a deadly virus has revealed that faeries DO exist. Rachel is a witch and she wants out of her job. The only problem is that not being able to pay off her contract means a contract on her life with all manner of supernatural assassins after her (thus the title of our book). Her only hope is to solve something BIG so she sets out to find out who is behind the illegal Brimstone operations in the city. Of course she almost dies trying numerous times. I read the second book of this series as well and what I admire most is probably how well minor things from the first book are incorporated in the second as unexpected ah-has. What annoyed me the most is probably Rachel's ignorance about certain aspects of other fae and magic. If she grew up a witch, shouldn't she already know these things? If her partner in I.S. was a vampire, shouldn't she know more about what sets them off? This inconsistency kept coming up and grated at my enjoyment of the rest of the book which I found to be generally quite absorbing and entertaining.

I purchased this and The Good The Bad and The Undead at Goodwill. I didn't plan on reading them (only swap them.) But upon seeing that they were wishlisted I decided to give them a shot! I am glad I did and now I'm sitting on the wishlist waiting for the rest of the series...lol.

Things I liked: The characters and types of characters were very imaginative and interesting. The idea of why the world had changed to the state it was in the book was a good concept! I enjoyed the humor of the characters, especially Jenks!

Things I didn't like: Rachel is continually portrayed as "airheaded" for lack of a better word. Not that she can't be intelligent when it is absolutely necessary, but she doesn't seem to to use her head unless it is life or death. I wish there was more about Ivy outside of when they are at home!

Overall I enjoyed it and would say it is worth the read!

A book so good that I spent my Saturday curled up in a chair reading. Nothing could get me to move. It's been awhile since I've found a book that good.

Ms. Harrison does an excellent job writing characters that are believable, that are people with issues, problems, needs. Her characters have a depth that some authors just can't grasp. When you read you know there's more to their actions than what is being told and you want to beg to be let in to know everything. Yet you're satisfied with the knowledge you have thinking of all the possiblities.

I would definitely recommend reading this book.

"All the creatures of the night gather in 'the Hollows' of Cincinnati, to hide, to prowl, to party ... and to feed."

I loved this book because of the alternate dimension-ness of it. If there were parallel universes, Ms. Harrison's universe of Witches, Pixies, Vampires, Warewolves (or rather, just Wares) and Fairies would be where I would want to live. The world has been turned upside down by the discovery of mythological creatures whom have been living next door to the 'normal' people for centuries. The Turn changed everything, and this book is a delightful romp through the shadier parts of it! And the series just gets better :)

Had a hard time getting this one. Seemed that some of the information about the city seemed to be missing (it wasn't - it just wasn't explained). It was ok, but book 2 is much better - probably because you understand things better from book 1.

Dead Witch Walking is a fantastically fun, first novel by Kim Harrison. The world Kim Harrison has created is marred by tomatoes. In our search for genetically engineered food and medicine, we created a nasty virus in tomatoes that has nearly wiped out mankind. This virus has exposed paranormal races to the world as they are immune. Society has splintered with all the upheaval and paranormal races have set-up residence in the Hallows. The Hallows can be compared to a Las Vegas for the paranormal. `Day-trippers' frequently take a walk-on-the-wild side to meet and mingle in the Hallows with werewolves, vampires, witches, and so on.

Rachel Morgan is a witch and an I.S. runner - similar to an FBI agent but for the paranormal world. Her career is going nowhere. It seems as though she can do nothing right and is given the lowest assignments available. Each day and night of work has become drudgery and Rachel is looking for a way out.

Dead Witch Walking quickly immerses the reader in a vibrant cast of characters. We meet Ivy, a living vampire; Jenks, a pixie with a lot of children; Trent, a businessman who may or may not be human and is believed to be dealing in Brimstone, a nasty drug, and so on.

Dead Witch Walking is a paranormal mystery that can easily be compared to Jim Butcher's Harry Dresden series or Laurell K. Hamilton's early Anita Blake novels. Rachel Morgan is a charming character that is very easy to like. She certainly has her issues, but she has none of the angst or brutality of Anita Blake.

Kim Harrison has created a fun book with laughs that are unexpected. The story line is not completely predictable and has many different twists and turns. I hope this is the beginning of a new series.

I originally got this book because I thought that the titles were great. The books are a quick read, have a decent storyline, and aren't as over-dramatic as the Laurell K. Hamilton series. The main character is a tad dense, and there is a lot unsaid about her roommate Ivy, and her new friend towards the end. I think the best part of the book is her Pixie friend Jenks and her new neighbor across the street as well. I would love to keep reading about those two characters and even hope that Rachel starts thinking like the smart chick she is supposed to be.

This is the first book of the urban fantasy series, "The Hollows." The story takes place in modern time but with an alternate history where 50 years ago a deadly bio-engineered virus killed most of the world's population and evened-out the number between normal people and witches/ weres/ vamps/ pixies/ etc. In "Dead Witch Walking," the supernatural is commonplace.

A talented witch with good instincts and quick relfexes, Rachel Morgan quits her job with Inderland Security (a paranormal version of the FBI) to start her own bounty hunter business with her friends Ivy (a vampire) and Jenks (a pixie). But to buy back her freedom from the IS, Rachel will have to take down the local underground crimelord, that is, if she can also survive faerie assassins, a demon attack, and avoid being a vampire snack at the same time.

This book reminds me of the Stephanie Plum series mixed with the early Anita Blake series. A fun read with lots of supernatural action and a spunky character who gets in over her head. I wonder what kind of trouble Rachel gets into in the next book?

I LOVED this book!

When you read the cover, it sounds like it's going to be darker than it actually is. The premise is a cross between Charmed (witches/magic spells), Southern Vampire (Sookie and Rachel have similar personalities, and this book has the concept of magical beings as a seperate society from the human world), with a dash of Twilight (I say this because Rachel's roommate is a vampire, and overall the book is very easy to read and fun - it's actually less dark than Twilight and would be appropriate for teen readers).

Rachel Morgan is such a likable, strong female character, as are her side kicks: Ivy, her vampire roommate, and Jenks (her Pixie body guard).

This book has all kinds a magical beings and magic happening, with unique explanations that I've never read before, which is really fun.

Rachel gets into several nerve-racking situations, so there is plenty of suspense that keeps you on the edge of your seat.

There is a small love-interest storyline, but definitely not a main focus as in Twilight or even Charlaine Harris novels.

There was one element to the story that I felt was overdone a bit - which is that Rachel is scared of her non-practicing vampire roommate, and those sequences seem a little over the top, but the author may be forshadowing something in a future installment.

I highly recommend this book and I can't wait to read the rest of the series!

This is not the usual genre of vamp novels that have hit the shelves recently which involve a heavy-handed amount of sex and romance. Dead Witch Walking leans more toward the Anita Blake detective vamp novel. Set aside the menage a trois aspect of the Blake novels...no sex here...lots and lots of allusions to it courtesy of our heroine's buddy who is a vamp. This stuff borders on a non hetero relationship although nothing comes of it, you'd swear it was around the corner. If you aren't comfortable with these allusions, set this one aside. The book in and of itself is a fairly fast paced detective novel set in a parallel Cincinnati where the vamps, ghouls and weres live across the river in the "Hollows". Harrison has some great original ideas and I enjoyed the universe she created. This red-headed witch is full of charms and enchantments and has a two great side kicks to keep you amused. Read it.

In this urban fantasy, the Midwest is hopping! Witches, vampires, weres, leprechauns and other supernatural beings live side by side with humanity, creating much tension, conflict - and unexpected alliances. With a young redhaired witch with attitude as narrator, this suspenful fantasy set in Cincinnati is a must for fans of Anita Blake and other characters in that vein.

I have a HUGE issue with the blurb on the back of This KIM Harrison series. They are written to grab the attention of everyone who appreciates Laurell K. Hamiltons Anita Blake vampire series. I stayed away from DEAD WITCH for that reason, but after getting over it, I am delighted. The two books are only alike in genre as types of bounty hunters of the supernatural& other oddities. Her writing is enjoyably fun while dealing with darkness & evil. Jenks the pixy gets my vote as favorite character. I also like how the book winds down, leaving small cracks open for further exploring in the series without punching you in the face about it. I am still a LKH fan but glad to know I have another author I can read in between book releases.

Rachel Morgan is a runner for the I.S. in a new world where witches, vampires and other fairy tale species are out of the closet. This has led to some segregation where humans don't want to live in the same neighborhood. Rachel is responsible for "bringing in" the bad guys, like tax evading leprechauns. After she quits, her former boss is out to get her. She starts a partnership with a living vampire and a pixie. She also gets involved in trying to prove an upstanding citizen is running illegal bio-drugs. There was mix of the every day in the paranormal but Harrison made smooth transitions. Liability insurance for spells made me giggle. The characters were lively and believable. I'll read the others in the series when I stock up on books again. It was a fun read.

Book one of a very popular seriers, takes place in an alternative history of the world. Instead of reaching into space during the cold war, humans reached into them selves and worked with bio-engering. A virus was created that got loose and killed a large percentage of the humans. Bring an equallibrium to humans and peoples of magic (witches, vampires, werewolves, pixies and faries).

The author creates a very complete world where humans and these magical being interact and have thier own history. pixies and faries are not good friends for example.

The plot revolves around Rachael (a witch that works for the FBI of magic) her boss hates are and gives her all the worse assisnments (so she claims). But she has messed up a lot lately and they have to pay hazard pay just so she gets a partner. Jenks her partner is a pixie and Ivy is a vamp. As the plot unfoldes they team up and go against some very powerfull people in this interesting world.

This is the first book of a series. I wasn't absolutely crazy about it, but I liked it enough to be interested in reading the second book (I have read all of Charlaine Harris' southern vampire novels, and I'm looking for something to fill the gap until the next new one comes out). It could certainly have been better-edited, and the plot is a bit muddled, but the urban fantasy world Harrison has created is interesting enough for me to keep going.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book! As a matter of fact, 1/2 way through, I decided I'd found another serious that would be entertaining and requested every Hollows book I could find! I've been engrossed in the Dresden Files books, but read them all. Discovered a whole genre of "Urban Fantasy" that was hit or miss, but a couple series have intrigued me, including the Grey Walker series. So far, there are only a few that I've found that are based enough in real world settings and aren't so "out there" that they interest me. The Hollows appears to hit the nail on the head.

I've read other books in this series, so I wasn't sure how much I would enjoy the first book in The Hollows book series. To be honest, it was everything I had hoped for and more. I can't wait to read the second book in the series.

This book introduces us to Rachel, Ivy, and Jenks and shows us how they became the team they are today. The pixie Jenks hasn't changed all that much in this series. He is handsome, hot tempered, but with a heart of gold. I'm intrigued by Ivy and Rachel's relationship though, and I think I love Keasley more than I ever have in these early books. I don't think I fully appreciated the character his character displays as much I do now. Rachel has come a long way, but I think Trent has been pretty consistant. Even knowing certain things that I do about how the series develops and plots that unfold, I find myself anxious to see how that happens. I think that may be one of the best things you can say about any series...especially read out of order.

High marks for this book. Would love to tell more, but I don't want to spoil any surprises.

This series was recommended to me by a few friends. It is another take on the super/witch/were world set in the Hallows a suburb of Cincinnati Ohio. The premise is the human population was decimated by infected tomatoes and the supernatural community uses this large reduction in the humans to make them selves known. They figure that at least if things go poorly they will have the best tactical advantage in millennia.
The story focuses on Rachel Morgan a witch with the IS, a governing agency for non-humans. She is a runner, or cop, and she has had it with the bureaucracy, her dumbass boss, getting the worst assignments, and she terminates her contract. Opening an independent business along with another runner Lily, who is a living vampire, and Jenks, who is a fairy she has to avoid a hit put out on her by her former boss Denon.
She spends the book trying to avoid her own death and work a case large enough to pay off her contract.
A different take on an altaverse, that includes new twists on traditional mythos, like the living vamps a pixie vs fairy war and different were creatures. A good read if you like the dead series by Charlaine Harris.

Good idea, but bad writing and characters ruined it. The idea of a bounty hunter-like witch rounding up vampires and werewolves sounded exciting. However, the writing style didn't work for me; some transitions between ideas/threads felt too abrupt, while parts of the storytelling were clunky and awkward. The main character came across as an idiot after she escaped several close calls thanks to the intervention of others and sheer luck. When I realized that I didn't care if she died, I gave up on the book.

Love the suspense not only in the telling of the story of the not so perfect heroine, but in the anticipation that it builds for for what will carryover in the subsequent books in the series. I could not get into this book. At all. I had a lot of trouble getting interested in the characters. Even with bad writing, if the characters are interesting, I can usually get on board. But these characters lacked depth. Rachel Morgan, the main character, spends the first couple of chapters complaining about her job and deciding to quit it. Along the way she manages to convince a vampire, Ivy, and a pixie, Jenks, to join her in leaving the Federal agency they are contracted withall for a wish from a leprechaun? Whose powers seem pretty limited in the first place. I couldnt feel Rachels frustration with her job; sure, she complained about it enough, but there was no real feeling described here. Ivys motivations were a complete mystery, chalked up to her faux-vampire mystique in Rachels eyes.

Their expressed emotions were shallow and immediate. One second Rachel was annoyed, the next angry, and the next scared, and all emotions were expressed through some kind of exclamation or poorly described facial feature. Kim Harrisons descriptions of the vampire characters seemed to want to express sexual desire on Rachels part, for her ex-boss Denon and for Ivy, her new partner in crime. But her descriptions didnt really commit to anything. If were seeing things from Rachels perspective, and shes terrified of Denon, then why is he being shown in such a sexual way? Is Harrison trying to keep his character open to sex with Rachel or something? Seems unlikely if Rachels character has any consistency at all.

Overall, I was pretty disappointed by this book. The plot was terribly fashioned, the characters shallow and uninteresting. The most interesting part was the world Harrison developed. It seemed to me that she put the most work into creating this dystopian future where fairies, vampires, and weres existed on an equal level with humans after a virus devastated the human population. If only the characters were as interesting as the world. Rachel is a witch, a product of this new environmentit could have been very interesting to see how the world had shaped her. Instead we got a character of shallow wants and needs, and very few complex thoughts.

Enjoyed this very much! Great imaginative mythos! Many questions left unanswered, so I must get the next book for answers!

The characters in this book are very enjoyable. The banter between Jenks, Ivy and Rachel is so well written, at times I felt as though I was a fly on the wall. The title is perfect as throughout the entire book, Rachel really is living on borrowed time. With a very lethal IS hit on her head, she is constantly under attack. Even with the help of her powerful cohorts and her own practiced magic, she barely keeps her head above water. Written with an wonderful knowledge of magic and supernatural lore, Ms. Harrison creates an exciting, well developed storyline. I have to be honest and tell you that it took me a long time to read this book. I have nothing negative to say about the writing or the book in general, only that for some reason, I had trouble really, really getting excited about reading it. I (as usual) have already purchased the entire series and I hope "The Good, The Bad and the Undead" will keep my interest a little better. Overall, an entertaining, well developed read.

I won't summarize the plot for you.. just request it.
If you like the whole vampire/witch/werewolf genre, you'll like this series. It's kind of on the same path as the Sookie Stackhouse series or the Dark Days series.

Definitely recommended. I'm on book 5, and I'm hooked.

I like the genre and I like the new take on witches and vampires. The book moved pretty slowly and doesn't explain enough. I will read the second one, but reluctantly.

I really wanted to like this but just couldn't. The main character is the one thing I can't stand. She's stupid.

I read the first chapter of this book in a sneak peek on amazon. I really enjoyed it and knew I had to get this book. It took me a bit to get into it after the first chapter though. I had to get used to the "world" she had envisioned. I was a bit confused on how things "worked" sometimes, but once I got used to it I was able to follow and enjoy much better.

I really liked the main character Rachel. She was strong but yet had her vulnerabilities that she had to overcome. Her sidekick Jenks had to be my favorite though. The interactions between those two were so fun. Ivy was the only character I had trouble connecting with. It was like Ms. Harrison didn't want us to know very much about her. I was a bit confused on Rachel's friendship/fear of Ivy. I'm hoping the following books will explain it more.

The plot line was exciting. I didn't expect most of the things that happened to Rachel and that's always a good thing. I hate when I'm able to predict the end of a book and I definitely couldn't do that with this one.

This wasn't the best book of this genre I have read but think I may have to go ahead and try the next books in the series since the reviews from other readers are favorable.

Futuristic story, first in a series. A witch and a vamp go into business together as private runners(missing persons, human or otherwise, mostly otherwise. They also add a pixie as a partner. Danger and antics prevail.

I read the 3rd installment of this series, not realizing that is IS a series. This is the first and even better than the other I read. Rachel is a witch who quit her job with an agency and a contract is out on her head. Every vamp, were, warlock, and even a demon is out to cash in. The characters are wonderful and well-drawn. Even the smiling villain is so charming you want to know more. Love Jenks, the pixie and his family. Can't wait to read #2 and more.

All the creatures of the night gather in "the Hollows" of Cincinnati, to hide, to prowl, to party...and to feed. Vampires rule the darkness in a predator-eat-predator world rife with dangers beyond imagining--and it's Rachel Morgan's job to keep that world civilized. A bounty hunter and witch with serious sex appeal and an attitude, she'll bring 'em back alive, dead...or undead.
