An interesting story about a secluded little town at the edge of a vast, eerie swamp. If you like the odd and strange this book is for you.

Saul is one of my favorite authors but I have to say I was completely disappointed in this book. Highly unbelievable and completely predictable.

Another John Saul winner. Even though the plot is revealed halfway through, the end is still a wonderful treat. A little gross, but I still got misty eyed.

I had no idea what was coming next and couldn't wait to find out. I was almost sad when I was done reading it, I wasn't ready for it to be done.

The Andersons left the town at the edge of the swamp long ago, never meaning to return. There was something not quite right about the vast cruel lowlands of Villejeune...something murky, menacing, hostile...an influence too malevolent to be natural. But the Andersons' dream of a new life in Atlanta faded away with Ted's lost job and sixteen-year-old Kelly's emotional problems. Now, hoping a change of scenery might help their troubled daughter put her life back together, Ted and Mary Anderson have decided to come home. Home to Villejeune.

But something waits for them.

Something evil.

Far from the prying eyes of civilization, beyond the reach of human law, a mysterious unknowable society lives by its own rules. They have their own customs, their own ceremonies and blood ritesâdark rituals of altars and infants, of candle, spirit and knife. Now the Andersons' return has completed a circle of destiny begun long ago. Now they must face a deadly drama of unholy ceremony and secret horror, of ancient greed preying upon young life, of unutterable depravity. For, like the other children of Villejeuneâchildren without mercy, without tearsâKelly Anderson is about to be drawn into a darkness so terrible it spares no life, no soul...http://www.johnsaul.com/

This was a excellent story.

I had requested this audiobook because I am familiar with the author, and have enjoyed his books in the past. I personally don't think this one qualifies as a "Horror" novel, it is more like a scary mystery! This book will not scare you - unless you are about 6 or 7, what it does impart is sense of urgency to find out who is who, who is good, and who is bad.

The setting (Florida everglades /swamp) helps convey a sense of forboding as you know there are alligators, crocodiles, snakes, and other creepy/crawly things. I think that in another author's hands this book would not have been as enjoyable, so "Hats off to Saul"

I recommend this book to "mystery/thriller" fans for the fact that it holds your attention, there is a lot of suspence, with a gripping plotline.

It's a good way to pass a 3 hour commute (exactly what I needed for 1 day)

Quick read. View of Florida swamps in a john Saul way with more than snakes and animals.

Villejeune, Florida. A secluded little town at the edge of a vast, eerie swamp. Far from prying eyes. Far from the laws of civilization. Here folks live by their own rules - dark rites of altars and infants, candles and blood. Years ago the Anderson family left town with a dream. Now they are back. To live out a nightmare. Something unspeakably evil. It feeds on the young and the innocent. And soon it will draw their teenage daughter into its unholy embrace...

This is the only BOOK to ever give me nightmares. I first read it in high school when it was a new release and I still remember how chilling it was. Horror readers will delight and if you're new to this author - pick up a bunch more, the older the better!
