the first book of an epic fantasy series-- full of characters with distinctly contrasting approaches to life (the philosopher, the mystic, the warrior, the harlot--but not quite as stereotypical as this sounds) all strategizing in the middle of a holy war

This is an extremely well written book, however I found the first half of the book rather dry and the characters distant and unlikable. Keeping in mind that the book is well over 500 pages, it was at least 250 pages in before the story actually grabbed me.

By the end of the book, however, I was hooked. I want to know what happens next and the set up for the characters did eventually take place.

I will be picking up the next book.
