The first book in J. R. Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood, this book is the story of Wrath, vampire king. It sets up the story arcs that will continue throughout the series, and it is awesome. Ward's vampire mythology is original (hard to do nowadays with vamps), her men are hot and uber-alpha, her heroines are likeable and interesting. Love this book--well, love all her books, but start with this one, you won't regret it.

My sister recommended this book to me, but it sat in a desk draw for 6 months before I finally ran out of things to read and picked it up.

WOW!! FABULOUS!! The story line is unique, and the characters leap off the page. The dialogue keeps the story moving along and I finished this book quickly. The synopsis does not do justice to this story.

If you like Vampire/paranormal romances with Alpha males, you will Love this book. J.R. Ward has included excerpts from the books as well as interviews with the main characters on her web site, if you are waffling, check it out.

After having this series recommended to me for nearly a month by a friend, I finally managed to get my hands on "Dark Lover" from this website. It took me a short time to fly through this book and I loved every moment of it! It's dark, intense and perfectly sexy. I like to consider this book to be an R-rated version of Stephenie Meyer's "Twilight".

Wrath is the leader of the Black Dagger Brotherhood, a mysterious group of warrior vampires that roam amongst the living. When one of the brothers, Darius, is suddenly killed, Wrath is left with the knowledge that Darius had a daughter, Beth, who will soon be going through the change to become a vampire. As a last request to Darius, Wrath watches and guards Beth with the intention to help her through her transition when it comes. But of course, it's never that easy or uncomplicated. :D

Probably the BEST vampire/paranormal romance stories out there. This is a great read! JR Ward writes great characters... especially strong females. This is on my keeper shelf.

Dark Lover was my first paranormal romance. I had a LOT of reservations and I was positive there was no way vampires could in any sense of the word be sexy or romantic. In fact, my mother had read all the books and loved them. But I stuck to my case, no way was I going to like this book. Well, I can say with no shame, that J.R. Ward proved me wrong. I loved it and can't wait to read the other 5.

Dark Lover is about a woman who is about to go through her transisition and the sexy vampire who is going to help her through it. There is a lot of action as far as the Brotherhood having to protect there species. There is a lot of steamy scenes that will probably knock your socks off too. If you have any reservations about reading this book, just give the first book a try. It may change your mind.

I just started this series after reading so much hype and several recommendations from friends. It actually turned out to be an excellent book, but it started really slow, and I was kind of put off by their names at first but as I read further I got into the story & the names didnt even bother me anymore. SUPER! I will be reading the entire series. Worth sticking with it.

I can't believe this was her first novel. She is a great story teller and her alternate world is very believable and entertaining. The brotherhood is oozing with characters, so I think I will continue with the series. The heroines are smart and sassy. A little skimpy on the smut, but the romance is sweet cuz the hero is such a bad ass and becomes totally smitten. I recommend it.

Before I read this book, I asked myself if I really needed to read another series? I didn't need to, but, I am so glad I did. I initially was not planning on reading J.R. Ward, but this book blew my expectations away. Other than bouncing around for a few scenes and names that I needed to get used to, I am so glad I picked up this book. Once I started, I had a hard time stopping! This book is on the AAR Top 100 list, deservedly so. It was action packed, dark, but full of depth and the romance between Wrath and Beth was wonderful. I can't wait to read the other books in this series.

Vampire Darius is worried about his half-breed daughter who may soon be going through her dangerous transformation into a vampire. He requests that the world's last purebred vampire, Wrath, help her through this change. Beth Randall has no idea that vampires exist...or that she may be changing into one. When Wrath comes to her in the night, his tales of the brotherhood and their war against the Lesser Society frightens her...yet she is drawn to him.

Amazing! J.R. Ward builds a world of vampires and the evil they fight against. This is one of the best books I've read this year. I highly recommend it. My rating: 5 Stars.

I have read this book three times, and I am not a re-reader at all. I can count on one hand the number of books I have reread in my lifetime...

The Black Dagger Brotherhood books are by far the best of the current paranormal crop and some of the most original. This one concerns the reluctant vampire king, Wrath, and the quest to protect the world from the lessers (essentially the soulless). Great characters, fast moving plot, and romance all make a great combination.

Her new book (the 7th in the series) Lover Avenged just came out Tuesday and I am rereading them all before I tackle that one. Call it a self-induced punishment/pleasure. Terrific book--there is a reason the waitlists are so long!

I was introduced to J.R. Ward after reading Lara Adrian and the reviews in her books mentioned how Adrian pretty much redid Ward's Brotherhood world. It peaked my curiosity and I wasn't disappointed. The first page was a glossary of terms and I thought it would be daunting, but really it was okay. So don't be intimidated by that.

The plot was good but you have to be patient because Ward jumped around a lot. The parts of the lesser was actually a little dull for me but they were short. (I also wondered what they called other lessers with the same initial in their last name. Does the second Mr. O become Mr. O2?) The world reminded me a lot of Gena Showalter's Dark series (not sure which one was first) but I think Showalter does humor better than Ward. Ward's scenes were amusing but I don't think they were laughed out loud funny.

I loved the characters, especially Wrath being the blind king. Doesn't quite explain why his sight kept getting worse though while Beth's sight got better after her transition. I didn't think I would like Beth because I usually dislike journalist characters but she was so cool and everything she did made sense. I really got to like Butch and can't wait to read his story.

Things that bother me about the series (personal taste, so minor) is the alternate spelling of the names. Don't know why but it just seemed pretentious. Also, if I met a guy named Rhage or Wrath or any of those things I would definitely make fun of them. Everyone almost seemed like those were normal names for your kids. Also sometimes her writing style seemed a little too detailed but not enough to remove too much from the story. Unsure what I thought about Darius storyline at the end, can't decide if I like it or not. It is slightly too much like soap operas when they run out of plot.

There is a lot of cussing in it but surprisingly the sex and violent scenes were rather discreet.

Really glad I got turned on to this series and I would recommend the book, but I still prefer Showalter. Ward is definitely way better than Lara Adrian though.

Very hot love scenes, believable romance and love story, great setup for future books. Honestly when I first read this book I found all the details and different perspectives from various characters to be a bit off-putting. I was immediately interested and involved in the love story between Wrath and Beth but couldn't understand what was going on with all these other characters. It was irritating. On a re-read, I skipped all the scenes with the Lessers. Read every moment with Butch, though, whom I thought might wind up the hero in the book. He seemed just as romantic as Wrath for much of the story and does a good job of setting up his character for his own future book). JR Ward sure knows how to write and I haven't read much else that so intimately develops the characters and keeps the interest and intensity high for future books.

A good read though not quite as good as all the raves I have read. I starts out very strongly but then becomes more ordinary.
But it is good enough that I will read the next in the series. The best part is the sense of humor of the members of the "Brotherhood".

The first in the series and the beginning of a love affair with the Brotherhood.
Wrath the reluctant king of the vampires with his dark malicious attitude being brought to his knees by a beautiful half breed who wasn't afraid to stand up for herself even when her world was changing into the twilight zone. Darius who is here only for a moment but whose spirit and loyalty will continue as long as the brotherhood does and the one who is kinda the orchestrator of the whole thing, Rhage the gorgeaous smart mouth, Zadist the broken warrior, Phury the self sacrificing peacemaker, Tohr and his levelheadness... just don't bring his mate into it, and the V. and Butch and the Red Socks that brought them together.

What started as an impulse buy at a bookstore turned out to be the addicting never put it down till the end best read ever.

This book sat on my bookshelf for month (b/c I had so many books to read) but when I finally picked it up and started it, I read it in one day! Loved it! Had to order the next two books in the series! What a great vampire origin/myth. Even though this one is about the Blind King, Wrath, you get the know the whole Brotherhood which is great--the other brothers are extremely strong supporting characters! Excellent start to this series!

On top of the sexyness theres pain and lost , then the most beautiful love. It's a must read! J R Ward did a great job!

If you're looking for another series where you can't wait for the next book, check out this author.

The glossary at the beginning of the book helps a lot. Even if you have to refer back to it, I recommend at least skimming it before you begin the book. It helped me better able to get pulled into the plot right away.

The author writes an interesting story line that has an intensity somewhere between Laurell K. Hamilton and Sherrilyn Kenyon. I like both those authors, and found J.R. Ward's Dark Lover equally compelling to read from the beginning of the book through to the end.

Her characters are complex and rich, and it isn't too difficult to get a sense of the relationships or history among the different players.

I loved this book and am starting on the second one ASAP. Happy reading!

If you haven't read Ward's Black Dagger brotherhood series you haven't really read paranormal romance!
There's a deadly turf war going on between vampires and their slayers. There exists a secret band of brothers like no other-six vampire warriors, defenders of their race. Yet none of them relishes killing more than Wrath, the leader of The Black Dagger Brotherhood.

The only purebred vampire left on earth, Wrath has a score to settle with the slayers who murdered his parents centuries ago. But, when one of his most trusted fighters is killed-leaving his half-breed daughter unaware of his existence or her fate-Wrath must usher her into the world of the undead-a world of sensuality beyond her wildest dreams.

The tension between Wrath and Beth is great and only intensifies through the series. Warning: Do NOT pick this up unless you want to become a full on Ward addict!!

This is the first book in the Black Dagger Brotherhood series which has at least nine books planned. I was a little tentative to start this series because it is long and is romance heavy (I am more of a straight urban fantasy fan). I keep hearing how wonderful it is though so I thought I would give it a try. I am glad I did, I was pleasantly surprised with how well this world was built and how well-rounded the characters were.

Elizabeth works as a journalist when she is attacked one night on her way home from work. She fights off the attacker but is shaken. Later that night she approached by a large dangerous man who says he knew her father, his name is Wrath and he has promised Elizabeth's father that he would protect her. Elizabeth doesn't know it but she is on the brink of changing into something not-so-human and Wrath is the only one who can walk her through it. Wrath is part of the Black Dagger Brotherhood, a Brotherhood of royal vampires sworn to protect humans and civilian vampires from the evil Lessers. With the violence rising on the streets more is going on than just Elizabeth's change. Wrath and Elizabeth are drawn to each other in a way neither has ever known before; but to be together they have to survive the growing danger of the Lessers.

Is this a romance? Oh yeah, it is definitely that. I was expecting that and just hoping that my eyes wouldn't roll out of their sockets with the improbability of it all. I was actually very surprised at what a great story this was. There is a solid and intricate plot here, a very interesting world and mythos, and in general just a very intriguing and engaging story. There is quite a bit of action, mystery, and violence throughout so the urban fantasy lover in me was satisfied. There is also a larger story here than just Wrath and Elizabeth's. This is the story of an ancient race on the brink of extinction.

While Wrath and Elizabeth do have the whole love at first sight thing going on, for the most part their relationship is fairly down to earth and believable. Despite Wrath's excessive alpha-maleness he respects Elizabeth and admires her and is willing to compromise with her. Elizabeth is not your normal swooning heroine. She is independent and puts Wrath in his place when he tries to strong-arm her with his over-protectiveness. The essence of it all is that they are perfect for each other. There are a number of mind-boggling hot sex scenes in here, they manage to be sexy yet have a level of tenderness to them that pulls at your heart strings. I was listening to this on audio book and at points the tension between Elizabeth and Wrath was so thick I forgot what I was doing and just stared off into space listening intently. It was just that engaging of a story. Elizabeth and Wrath have something that goes beyond chemistry and it is a wonderful thing to read.

Was it too much romance for me? At times it was. The descriptions of rippling stomachs and velvety thighs had me rolling my eyes a time or two; so beware if you are approaching this from the urban fantasy genre there is that some of that horrible romancy description thing going on. It wasn't too bad though. It bothered me a bit how Wrath and Elizabeth were immediately drawn to each other, but as their relationship became more down to earth I was able to forgive that.

I will say that the Black Dagger Brotherhood is one group of seriously emotionally screwed up men. Part of me is drawn to all their messed up emotional baggage and curious at how they will continue to defend their race while trying to sort through all of that. I will be honest it is kind of like those gossip magazines, some of these men are just so close to being train wrecks I just can't help but be curious as to what will happen.

Overall I can say I thoroughly (if a bit guiltily) enjoyed this book. The chemistry between Wrath and Elizabeth is out of this world and the two characters have a lot of dimension to them. There is a lot of action, danger, and violence here which soothed the urban fantasy lover in me. The world is interesting and solidly built. I feel like Ward is actually interested in this world she is writing about and it shows. I had previously read the Alien Huntress series by Gena Showalter and just couldn't get into it; that series felt like the world was only an excuse for the erotic scenes, this series doesn't feel like that. So, yeah, I will be reading more books in this series. My curiosity just won't let me leave the rest of those Black Dagger Brothers quite yet.

This was one of my first romance genre novels, I picked it out because it was about vampires and I was looking for vampire book to read after the Twilight Saga. I really liked this book. I have mainly stuck to the young adult vampire novels since Anne Rice, what can I say I tend to get stuck on things. So when my friend from back home on good reads recommended this book I arched a brow. In all honesty I thought I would not like it, but she is a good friend and she liked it so I decided to give it a fair shot at least. I am glad I did, I loved this book.

Dark lover is everything a Vampire novel should be, sexy and mysterious with some twists and a heap if mystery as well. The bad guys are really bad and the good guys well they are almost as bad as the bad guys but they have a code and morals and they follow them, mostly. There is an undercurrent of a love story of course but it fits I so well with the rest of the story I would not call it a romance novel, this is a Vampire novel with romance thrown in. frankly the hardest thing youre going to have to do with this book is sort out your favorite character, the big bad Wrath, the handsome dangerous Thorment or perhaps Phury is more your style the good side of the twins..I am very much looking forward to the next book I this series my mail man is officially on stalk watch, I do not want to give any spoilers away but if you have not read this book and started this series and you like vampires its time to start I am a fan of the Brotherhood.

I got this while looking for "something new." Vampire books seem to have taken on a new life with Twilight and other books -- this is definitely *NOT* a Twilight rip-off! There is some sex, some violence, and the characters are all relate-able at some level. These vampires don't get all "sparkly" in the sun, they poof into flames! But, they also are muscled and deadly.

The Black Dagger Brotherhood is a protection group within the vampires, so they see a lot of action. They have a corresponding group in humankind that they are in constant conflict with. Like any good book, you don't have just "good" or "evil" in a character (well, maybe a few), but some gray in each to make them interesting.

A good, unique take on the vampire mythos; some attributes taken from the typical Dracula story, but some unique twists. I couldn't wait to keep reading it, now on to book 2!

So happy to have found out about J.R. Ward.
Love her take on Vampires and the world that she has created is awsome. She had me at the opening chapter describing Wrath walking through the crowd.
The story moved at a great pace. The interaction btwn all the guys in the brotherhood makes you want to read more about them ~ what i wouldn't give to be able to roll them all into one guy. I liked Beth ~ a strong, independant woman thrown into a very odd situation and having to believe and trust in a person who scares her in the beginning, to find that they are a perfect fit for one another in the end.
I must admit though, that I would skim through the chapters that didn't have the Brotherhood or Wrath & Beth in it ~ couldn't help myself :)

Amazing, hot, great..probably one of the best vampire paranormal romance series I've read (the Night Huntress series by Jeaniene Frost is equally good). The writing is good and Ward doesn't let you down. These vampire males are very much alpha males, but they're not so aggressive that you're put off.

Dark Lover is a good introduction to the Black Dagger Brotherhood series although the books that follow in the series are better. When I first read Dark Lover I was really captivated by it, but having read the rest of the books in the series, I have to say the third and fifth book are my favorites. But start with Dark Lover first or you'll be confused by the stories that follow.

Dark Lover is the story of Wrath, the last purebred vampire left in the world. He's technically the leader of his people, but he's a most unwilling leader. Beth is the half-human, half vampire daughter of Darius, a vampire aristocrat who is Wrath's friend and brother at arms. She's unaware of her vampire heritage. When Darius asks Wrath to do a favor (and the favor concerns Beth), Wrath is torn. He's not fond of humans, but he also finds it difficult to ignore his feelings. There's a lot of action, lots of sex, romance, and humor. The urban slang favored by the male vampires is odd especially coming from vampires who've been around for centuries, but otherwise I liked Dark Lover.

The book was a slow start for me. I had to stop reading it a couple of times because of the awkwardness of some slang words like thats wack and Dog it just didnt fit into who the characters were. Made them sound more collage frat than vampire warriors. Once I got past the misplaced slang, I enjoyed the story of Wrath and Beth. The struggles of coming to terms of becoming a vampire for Beth and Wrath who wants to be a loner type person having these felling that he doesnt want for Beth. ...when the man at Borders took me to the romance section when I asked him about this author. I haven't been much of a reader up until about a year ago. I started out with the Twilight series because a co-worker recommended it...which led me to the House of Night series...which led me to a dead end while i waited for the last Twilight book and the next HON book to come out. I discovered that if i looked up a book such as the teen romance series listed above that it gives you more suggestions. I wrote down a few of the authors and went to look for them. Little did i know that most of the authors i wrote down were in fact romance authors (I have never read a "real" romance book in my life) and let me tell you when i was taken back to that section i turned beet red. Decided that i would try the Ward book 1 and see what i thought (I was hesitant about starting romance books) but 2 days later when i was 3/4 done with Dark Lover i went straight out and bought all the rest in the series and am anxiously awaiting Lover Avenged in April........Love this series and would recommend to anyone!!

Generally, I try to avoid reading books that have overwhelming praise. I think I tend to become overly critical and find every flaw there is plus make up some of my own. As a result, I am frequently disappointed.
Not so in this case. I have drank the Kool-Aid and am joining the cult. I loved it! From the over the top alphas to the cheesy dialogue, I ate it up it a spoon and was left wanting more.
My only criticism is the near rape of the heroine. That is one of my all-time pet peeves. I can't stand it. I will not hold it against the book though because it's just a matter of personal tastes.

All of the books in this series are amazing.
Dark Lover (book 1) is about Wrath, the king who at first really does not want to be a king. All of these men are bigger than life, stronger than anything and love only once and forever and have to fight off the bad guys.
Wath is also a blind king which does nto affect his ability to lead...

This is the first in a GREAT series of books about The Black Dagger Brotherhood. The Brotherhood is made up of a band of vampire warriors that possess immense physical and mental abilities due to selective breeding. Brothers are sworn to protect their race, particularly against the Lessening Society, a group of de-souled humans who exist strictly for the purpose of eradicating the vampire species.

Each book in the series focuses mainly on a particular member of the Brotherhood, while still deeply involving other characters. This first book focuses on Wrath, the leader of the vampires and the only purebred vampire left.

Ward's characterization is wonderful, and you quickly begin to feel as if you know these characters. I promise you, with each book you read you will be begging for more!

I picked this up at a thrift shop and someone requested it, so I had to read it so I could send it out. Wow. I read this in about 24 hours. And it's about 400 pages. It was sooooo good!! I just loved it! The whole story was really good, but every time they split from the main characters to another part of the story, I had to stop myself from skipping to get back to them. This was my first book of JR Wards ever reading. I have read other paranormal romances like Kenyon, Moning and Cole, but I have to say Ward is now my #1 fave. She is highly witty and really had me laughing with her phrases, True. Really how does she come up with them? Her heroes are tough but very like able and they have suffered greatly in the past. So they all dealing with their own issues, but really come together as brothers do. Dark Lover starts her series out running and a strong favorite. She intertwines each books characters together and builds a real, if somewhat unusual, family. I would definitely reccomend reading the series in order. I just can't put the books down and am now reading the 6th book in the BDB series. The rumors are that she will keep writing this series as long as there is the demand, so the end is nowhere in site. :)

It's a good story featuring a vampire brotherhood, which should set it up to be an excellent book. I liked the characterizations, the action, the drama, but in the end, it was just too much; too much sex, too much emotional schlock. I really wanted more story and less sexual positioning along with the emotional 'sugariness'. I'm reading the rest of the series, though, because it has great potential.
Tesstarosa avatar reviewed Dark Lover (Black Dagger Brotherhood, Bk 1) on + 151 more book reviews
A friend of mine recommended this series to me about a year ago when I had read the Twilight series and was saying how poorly written the books were. Based on her recommendation, I started to collect the books in the series. It took a while to get a copy of book three, but I now have eight of the nine books, so I decided to get started.

Some background on the brotherhood first. There are seven member of the Black Dagger Brotherhood, sworn to protect the vampire civilians from the Lessening Society (members of which are called lessers and can be recognized by their baby powder smell.) The members are Wrath, Darius, Tohrment, Vishous, Rhage, Phury and Zsadist.

This first book is about Wrath the Vampire king, how he came to be king and fell in love with Beth Randall.

The story opens with Darius and Tohrment (Tohr) at a bar waiting for Wrath to join them. Darius has told Tohr that he wants to ask Wrath to meet his daughter who is half-human and has never met him. She is about to turn 25 and he is sure she will go through a transition (as all vampires do at approximately age 25) and become a vampire. Unfortunately, she has been raised as an orphan by humans and knows nothing of her vampire background.

Wrath takes the information from Darius, but does not accept the responsibility immediately. He is not interested in his role as king and this is a responsibility hed rather put on someone else. They leave the bar Wrath to dematerialize back home and Darius to his sports car to drive home. As Wrath is leaving the bar, he is attacked by a lesser who he takes out with a throwing star. Then as he is about to dematerialize and go home, there is an explosion and he discovers that the lessers have blown up Darius and his car.

This action makes him change his mind about meeting Darius daughter, Beth. He decides he will help her through the transition and then be done with her.

Beth Randall has grown up in orphanages. Her mother died from hemorrhaging during her birth and she doesnt know anything about her father. She is now a reporter for the local newspaper. She mostly does editing on other reporters writing but occasionally covers the local crime scene, which has given her an in with two men on the local police force Jose de la Cruz, a police detective, and Brian Butch ONeal, a hard-asses homicide detective (who has a bit of a thing for Beth.)

On the evening that her father is murdered, Beth is sexually assaulted by a local, rich college kid. She manages to get away after throwing some punches of her own but doesnt report the crime until the next morning. In fact, she is somewhat reluctant to report it even though both Jose and Butch know something is up.

Shortly thereafter, Wrath shows up at Beths apartment and Beth thinks that he is one of the men Butch has sent to watch over her. And, instead of just getting to know Beth and helping her through the transition, Wrath falls in love with Beth.

Butch starts to watch Beths apartment and sees Wrath there. He thinks Wrath wants to harm Beth and tries to stop him by having him arrested. Beth is unable to stop him and before Butch can get Wrath into the station and booked, he beats up Butch and escapes with Beth. (And he fails to erase Butchs memory of events, so Butch is still trying to follow him.)

Butch is put on probation from the police force for excessive use of force on a suspect. The suspect in question, the rich kid who had assaulted Beth. Hed reported that hed been assaulted to the police and Butch figures out his story is a lie when Beth reports her assault.

Eventually, Butch follows Beth and ends up at the home where Wrath is living and the other brothers are staying. While there, he meets Marissa the Wraths current partner, although the two have never fully consummated their relationship. He falls in love with her and earns the respect of the rest of the Brothers.

In order for Wrath to get permission from the Scribe Virgin (a spiritual leader, of shorts) to break his relationship with Marissa and marry Beth, he must make a sacrifice that he has been thus far unwilling to take stop fighting and ascend to the throne as the king of the vampires.

Okay, now that Ive practically written the entire story for you, heres what I didnt like about the book. First, the spelling of the names and the need to slap hs in every name. Although, I dont understand why Darius isnt Dahrius or Darhius and Wrath is Rhath or Whrath for that matter. Also, Wrath is blind he can read without a monster magnifying glass but has no problem fighting blind.

The part I liked the least though were the segments about the lessers, who are led by a man named Mr X. Its not a very interesting part of the story other than you know what the enemy is planning and a bit about how the Lessening Society functions. Probably the most annoying thing is the authors apparent refusal to use pronouns for Mr X. So Mr X does this and then Mr X does that and then Mr X get this and Mr X gets that.

What I did like about the book definitely has outweighed the dislikes. The story line is very compelling and characters are called upon to make sacrifices to get the love they want. Wrath must become king if he wants to be able to marry Beth. Beth must leave the life shes known if she wants to live. In fact, in a twist at the end of the story, Darius is going to be allowed to come back so he can see his daughter, but he too will have to make a sacrifice for that to happen.

These sacrifices redeem them and open them up to love.

(Oh, yeah, and theres lots of sex.)

First of the Black Dagger Brotherhood. Wrath has a score to settle with the slayers who murdered his parents centuries ago. But when one of his most trusted warriors is killed leaving a half-breed daughter, Wrath must usher her into the world of the undead...Beth is helpless against the dangerously sexy man who comes to her at night with shadows in his eyes. His tales frighten her but his touch ignites a hunger that threatens to consume them both.... In this literary world the vampires can be the good guys or the bad guys....or maybe both at the same time. Addictive series, I can never wait for the next one. See other 3 posted.

This book is about a singular race of vampire warriors and the daily fight they go through to keep their people alive against the soul-less humans known as lessers. Beth comes into the picture, the daughter of one of the brothers, and turns everything upside down.

This is one my favorite books of all time. I absolutely adore this book, the characters, the humor, the wit, and the twist Ward gives her vampires. Seeing as this is a romance there is some adult content and it is incredibly steamy. The plot is strong and you don't feel like you are reading a romance but more like a paranormal thriller, there is such depth and planning to the whole book, its great. Beth and Wrath have such a great charisma, I laugh, cry, and love everything through out this whole book.

I really loved this book. I am now on the 8th in the series and I love them all. I cannot put them down. It is a good change to read a book about vampires but not be reminded in every other paragraph that you are reading about vampires and what ever qualities that particular author has chosen for them to have, for example, the no sunlight thing, the feeding only on whatever, the eye color changes, etc., etc., etc. I love vampire books but get tired of all of the qualifications. These books have good stories and the author tells them well.

Apologies to everyone else who liked this, but I just couldn't get past the first 70 pages or so. I felt like King Arthur, from Monty Python's Holy Grail, when he looked at Camelot with awe, then, upon thinking more about it, announced instead: "On second thought, let's not go to Camelot. It is a silly place". Yes, it is an odd analogy, but that is what this book like was to me. I was expecting something amazing but just couldn't get past the silliness. For starters, the heroes are supposed to be these legendary, very ancient, uber-warrior beings and they had the weirdest rock-star wannabe names. Phury? Zhadist? Tohrment? I'm sorry Ms. Ward but I would have respected your protagonists more if you just spelled their names Fury, Sadist and Torment. To my great embarrassment, they spoke, behaved and looked just as ridiculous. So far, I've already had my fill of leather pants and leather jackets, I think this is all they own in their wardrobes, must be a brotherhood requirement (like having a silly name). Moving away from our heroes, the villains smell like baby powder. Yes, like a snuggly-fresh scented baby after a diaper change or a bath. An image of my toddler kept popping in my mind every time she talked about the bad guy/s and how they smelled. I would critique more but I just couldn't finish this book, so yes, in all fairness please keep that in mind if you are deciding to order it.

This book had me hooked from the moment I started to read. I just couldn't put it down. It had just the right amount of sensuality and action through out the book and none of it was ever overwhelming. I just kept wanting more. After reading this I will definately be going shopping for the other books in this series and maybe others by this authur.

I loved this book! I had high hopes because this series came highly recommended and so far it is delivering. I was a bit leery at first because it takes time to get into, but once you get the gist of the story, it is wonderful.

I love Beth. She is an amazing heroine. She is badass and beautiful. It is refreshing to see a woman represented in that way instead of being man crazy. I love all of the Brothers. They are all amazing and I can't wait to read their stories. Wrath is wonderful. He is hardcore and sexy.It is so wonderful to see the love develop between him and Beth. I think that this story shows the typical male feelings towards commitment and how the right woman can change a man. I didn't really care for the lesser storyline. It was slow and I thought it could have been done so much better.

Overall, I think that this book is great. I am so excited to start the next one in the series.

What a fantastic world JR Ward has created! The Black Dagger Brotherhood is an interesting twist on the usual vampire "hero". She has created some truly compelling characters and has revitalized the genre.

I have been into paranormal/vampire books the last few years. And there are many of them out there right now! In a way there is nothing new in this story -alpha male, female with an unknown past needing help.... but the writing is solid, and I liked the characters. I liked it enough that I plan on getting the rest of the series. I think that most paranormal/vampire romance fans will like this book. And seeing how it is just the first book in the series and just introducing the characters and background on the 'brotherhood'.... I think the series will probably only get better.

Let me start by saying that as someone who reads a lot of paranormal romance I'm fairly jaded and tend to be critical. This book, really the series as a whole, is an attempt to modernize and re-imagine the concept of vampires.

The basic plot:

Heroine Beth has lived her life as a human, with no idea that vampires exist, only to discover that she is in fact half-vampire and will soon undergo what is known as a transition-the painful process of becoming a full fledged vampire-at which point she will need to drink from a male vampire to survive. Wrath, our hero, is a warrior as well as the heir to the vampire throne. He is asked by Beth's vampire father to see her through her transition. He initially refuses, but changes his mind upon her father's unexpected death.

The romance is fast and hot. Wrath is an undeniably sexy character. He is strong and pushy. Thankfully Beth is no push over either-she speaks her mind and actually does reasonably well at dealing with everything thats thrown at her. The resulting chemistry is explosive.

Other characters introduced are intriguing and diverse. Wrath's fellow warriors are bad boys who have rich and complex personalities and backgrounds.

The action is present, believable, and well balanced. Ward supplies a band of villains, the Lessers, who are the enemies of the vampire. The warriors fight to keep their numbers down, and to keep the civilians of their species alive. This enriches the conflict, but does not detract in any way from the romance.

The two biggest problems with I found with this book were dialog and pacing. Ward tends to have her characters speak in a weird mix of urban slang and old-world European. There are times when it just strikes me as silly. Secondly I had some issues with the fact that that Wrath and Beth's romance caught and progressed so quickly. Ward explains away their quick attraction as a result of the fact that they're vampires. None the less, I felt that a slower progression would have made the emotional side of the romance more believable.

Over-all: There are some truly wonderful moments in this book. I see it as a violent, politically incorrect fairy tale. It should appeal to most fans of paranormal romance.

I really enjoy this series. This book is a good start. The author remains fairly true to the scenario/characters she establishes in this book throughout the series.

They are a good read.

Absolutely spell bound by this book, enjoying it very much as I am reading it now. BUT since I loved this one so much I have requested every other book in the series :o) Nothing like a great fantasy romance with passion, intrigue, and sci-fiction (or is it?)You be the judge ;o)

*This is a re-read for me, but my first review of the books*

A stellar novel of angst, suspense, blood sucking and romance when you least expect!

J.R. Ward is a phenomenal story teller. She pulled me from page one, and held me captive with Wrath's angst and pain, and with Mary's confusion and love. These characters weren't just created....they were molded into beautiful creatures of the night, and woven into the story line in just the right way.

This story of pain, unexpected love, sorrow and confusion is one that will sit with the reader long after the last page is turn. The Brotherhood is family now, and I look forward to continuing the journeys of each Brother's love story.

Definitely recommended with the highest of 5 stars!

*This book was purchased by me, for my personal collection. All opinions, negative or positive are solely my own.*

***MINOR SPOILER***
This was an intoxicating, wonderful, quick read. It dark sensuous, emotional and enticing. I love the changing in the main characters Wrath and Beth as the book gets deeper although I wish that Darius' death hadn't happened so soon in the beginning. The author tried to play it like this was a HUGE hit to the brotherhood but because we didn't really know him it didn't feel like a big thing. Great juggling of the different story line's and hard intense lovemaking. A definite read for any paranormal romance lover.

Was looking for a new series to read. I figured I would try this. I didn't even make it to chapter 3. I had to force myself to read the 1 1/2 chapters that I did. It just wasn't a book I could get into.

I Loved Loved Loved this book. The story grabbed me from the first page. The characters immediately won me over and the plot kept me flipping pages as fast as I could; while the writers 'voice' kept me enthralled. Thats the upshot. The thing is the brotherhood is not for everyone so be warned. I wouldn't start this series unless you have a high tollerence for pain.
I loved the characters so much I couldn't wait to read the rest of their storys. I almost wish I hadn't because the rest of the series is dark, dark, dark. J.R. Ward strips her characters bare and leaves them (emotionally, metephorically) bleeding. It was agonizing for me to watch these characters I loved so much suffer through the tribulations she put then through.
So while Dark Lover stays on my shelf as a shining example of how to write an awesome story. I havn't decided if I will finish the series. I am up to Lover Mine (FYI the story I expect to be one of the critical plot vehicals) because I am afraid of what she will put the focal character through. He has already gone through Hell twice (3 times if you want to be picky) and I'm not sure I'm strong enough to withstand the (emotional) beating he is sure to endure next.

This is the first book in the series and I have to say I'm hooked. I just received the next few books in the series and I can't wait to read them.

In the shadows of the night in Caldwell, New York, there's a deadly turf war going on between vampires and their slayers. There exists a secret band of brothers like no other-six vampire warriors, defenders of their race. Yet none of them relishes killing more than Wrath, the leader of The Black Dagger Brotherhood.

Wrath is the only purebred vampire left on earth, Wrath has a score to settle with the slayers who murdered his parents centuries ago. But, when one of his most trusted fighters is killed-leaving his half-breed daughter unaware of his existence or her fate-Wrath must usher her into the world of the undead-a world of sensuality beyond her wildest dreams.

This book was primarily about Wrath the undisputed King of the vampires and Elizabeth the half human daughter to Darius a now deceased brother to Wrath. The book begins with Darius asking his king, Wrath, for a favor. He requests that he give his blood for his daughters transition. Wrath declines, only to accept when he find out that Darius was killed in a bomb that same evening. He agrees to aid in her transition as payment for the services Darius has given him for centuries.

Upon meeting Beth (Elizabeth) his lust is stirred for the first time since his transition. He wants her and has little to no control over the effect. He has lived for centuries and has no real clue as to how to woo Beth. He tries and feels like a failure. Beth feels like she comes alive with him and no amount of odd behavior or curt manners will push her away. She wants him and she knows he wants her.

This book was written by many points of views and has many story lines that intertwined. It's a fantastic story that kept me on pins and needles most of the way through. I can't see anyone not loving this book. I just hope the rest are just as good.

The influence of Christine Feehan is apparent. If an author is to be influenced, might as well pick the best. And an author can only write so fast. So, let's welcome another great series into the paranormal romance genre.

The author has several other series that I haven't read. Yet.
