i found this book to have the same power and majesty of all s.m. stirlings books. you can not help liking the characters and the action is almost non stop. one of the things about stirling is his love of the narative and the scene setup. you get every leaf and twig here. but the thing that always blows me away is when there is food in the story. all i can say is eat before you read or expect to binge afterward. at the very least your mouth will water!

Excellant alternate history reading. I think this is S.M. Stirling's best so far.

Another wonderful ride into an alternative universe by the master, S. M. Stirling. Reading one of Stirling's books is like crawling in to a warm bed on a rainy afternoon. I enjoy every aspect of them (well, he gets a little wordy at times, but oh what words). An excellent read.

From the back of the book:

"OAKLAND, 1945. Ex-soldier John Rolfe, newly back from the Pacific, has made a fabulous discovery: a portal to an alternate America where Europeans have never set foot -- and the only other humans in sight are a band of very curious Indians. Able to return at will to the modern world, Rolfe summons the only people with whom he is willing to share his discovery: his war buddies. And he tells them to bring their families...

LOS ANGELES, 21st Century. Fish and Game warden Tom christiansen is involved in the bust of a smuggling operation. What he turns up is something he never anticipated: a photo of authenitc Aztec priests decked out in Grateful Dead t-shirts, and a live condor from a gene pool that doesn't correspond to any known in captivity OR the wild. These finds soon lead him to woman named Adrienne Rolfe -- and a secret that's been hidden for sixty years."

Another great book by Stirling!! From the cover: "Even more of a romp than Stirling's The Peshawar Lancers...Its action scenes are state-of-the-art and its femmes wonderfully formidables."

Is not the best of Stirling's books, but it turned out ok when finished.
