When I saw that one of my favorite fantasy authors had developed a new series beginning with this novel, I had to read it. As inventive as she was for the Crown of Stars series, Elliott proves once again how prodigious and creative she can be. The narrator is Catherine, known as Cat, whose adventures begin with her removal from the home of her "uncle and aunt." The plot thickens when her betrothed discovers that she is not who either of them believe she is. He is ordered to execute her so he can be free to marry the real daughter, Cat's best friend, Beatrice. As Cat escapes again and again from those who would end her life she finds kin allies in the spirit world including a brother who exists there as a saber tooth cat. To say more would be to say too much. I must say that I truly enjoyed this read and look forward to the sequel, Cold Fire
I give the book a 3.5/5 overall.
In terms of racially diverse characters, its a 5/5. There are super awesome characters of all races and that made me super happy!
In terms of the story, its pretty interesting. It was true that there were some pretty cool plot twists though and I wanted to know what happened so I couldnt put it down.
The writing was mediocre though. It drawled on a lot at time and I would have put it down if I didnt want to see how the story was going to develop.
It was a book that kept my attention pretty well, so Id say read it.
