When I first realized this was listed as a 'Young Adult' book, I almost put it down. But I gave it a try. The first chapters are a little confusing, who is writing ? What are they writing about? It all gradually becomes clearer, and heartbreaking. This book shows the strengths of friendship, and of hate. Not just another WWII book.

I agree with what Booklist said about it "If you pick up this book, it will be some time before you put your dog-eared, tear-stained copy back down."

This is a gripping, understated thriller which takes some literary chances in the form in which the story is told - but once I was into it, I found it hard to put down. It's not for everybody, however - the story is not told in a straightforward way and some of the material will be too strong for some. But things like this did happen and it is best that we be reminded from time to time that they did.

This book was difficult for me to read. It was well written and had very high reviews. However, the premise is that the book is born as the main character writes her "confession" to avoid any more of the torture she is subjected to by the Gestapo. Although the descriptions of her treatment are oblique, and referred to with a macabre humor, it was disturbing to me. In addition, the detailed descriptions of the planes they were flying during WWII was boring. Definitely not for the squeamish.

The ABSOLUTE BEST BOOK in the HISTORY of the WORLD. That says it all, I guess. See for yourself. An inspiring and surprising tale of WWII. Written in two parts, answers to many questions aren't revealed until the end. The story is mostly based off of real events, but it's hard to find something quite like it. After reading it, I wanted to be a pilot (and I still do). Warning: there is a sad part.

I really wanted to like this book, I mean I REALLY WANTED TO LIKE IT! I didn't even wait for it to come up on my WL, instead I bought it. I was so excited. And therein, I think, lies the problem. My expectations were too high. Sigh. Anyway, it didn't hit the mark with me (although I generally tend to be unimpressed by all young adult books, so I'm not the target audience here). In any case, it had its ups and downs, and I rate it middle of the road on overall impact.
