Lawyer Andy Carpenter is asked to help his friend Vince with the defense of his son in a serial murder case. There are several surprises in this book. Friendship, the "mob", family ties, and publicity all are part of this book. It wasn't the best read I've had recently, but pretty good.

This is a fantastic book that will not disappoint! This legal thriller has many surprising twists with an ending that will keep you thinking for a long time. This is the third book I have read by D. Rosenfelt and have enjoyed every one!

Third in the Andy Carpenter, defense lawyer in New Jersey series. When a serial killer begins calling a local newspaper reporter with details of the killings, the city is in thrall watching the story unfold. When the reporter is found at the scene of the fourth victim with a head injury, the apparent victim of the killer, things get tense. When it's learned that the murdered woman is a high-powered political watchdog, and some of the reporter's statements don't ring true, he's suddenly arrested for her murder, and Andy's on board as his defense attorney.

I really like this series! The book is well-plotted with plenty of twists, turns and red herrings, although I have to admit I had one of those "that's the bad guy!" moments when the person in question was introduced, I had no idea how or why the killings were done, and I doubted my gut feeling a few times along the way. You gotta read to the end of these books, that's for sure! Well done.

I haven't read anything like this before. It's a really funny attorney who reminds you of some of the funnier female detectives. I enjoyed it, but a steady diet of it would get old, however, I will look for more by this author. A wise cracking attorney defending someone accused of being a serial killer is a different concept.

This is a fairly predictable but well developed storyline. I'm getting a little bored with the constant mental banter Andy Carpenter vocalizes from within. I think the first book by this author, open and shut, was more compelling. It prompted me to order, bury the lead. I was not sorry i read this book. It's a quick read.

I love this series more with each one I read. The sharp wit combined with the suspense of a great legal thriller is irresistible. This one you will not figure out. Compelling and page turning! Very well done!

I am so glad I discovered this character, Andy Carpenter, he is a lawyer that inherited $22 million dollars so he doesn't practice law on a regular basis but he finds himself with clients that are considered guilty and he doesn't have good evidence and it takes a miracle sometimes for him to win his case, but win he does.

I've been reading all of David Rosenfelt's books featuring attorney Andy Carpenter. The plots, while easy to follow, have twists that do tend to keep you guessing. He injects plenty of wisecracks and jokes to lighten the mood when necessary. I really like these!

Another entertaining book by D.R. I found his books by accident. After learning his main character has a dog in each book I had to read them all. Andy is funny and an animal lover who isn't afraid to tell anyone his dog is smarter. Has good twists and turns and it's so easy to get attached to the characters. David Rosenfelt is involved with animal rescue and likes to include some of his own world into his books. I only have Play Dead left to read an they're all good. Reading them in order helps to follow the character and know them better but not necessary. If you are an animal lover you will love D.R.'s books and enjoy reading about Aandy and his golden Tara.

I enjoy this author and have read three of his books so far...easy read, and I like the main character. Mystery lovers who enjoy books that follow the same lead character will enjoy Rosenfelt's books.

I really liked this one! This is just a fun series, no doubt about it! I really like the role of the mafia so far, too. The characters are all interesting and the dialogue is lively and funny. I must admit that the male characters are much more developed than the female characters, though. Still, it's a lot of fun and each of the plots are original - although how many frame-ups can one lawyer reveal? It will be interesting to see how this series develops.

Have just discovered David Rosenfelt and have now read 3 of his books. All have the same sense of humor written in and all have suspense and a twist at the end. Loved them all and this one was not exception!

This is Andy Carpenters third New Jersey lawyer-comedy and it is fun with a few plot twists to keep things interesting. Andy is aided by his girlfriend (and PI) Laurie Collins and hypochondriac Kevin Randall, a fellow lawyer. As always, Tara, the golden retriever, is part of the scene.

Daniel Cummings, a local reporter, has been chosen by a serial killer to announce his successes to the police and his readers. Unfortunately for Daniel, he becomes the main serial killer suspect when the police find out that Daniels wife was murdered a few years earlier.

One of Andys friends asks him to defend Daniel and of course Andy is reluctant. Eventually, Andy and his team are convinced of Daniels innocence and accept the case.

This is a short, lightweight novel with a casual style; Andy doesnt take life (or himself) too seriously. 3.5 stars

This is the first of the Andy Carpenter mystery series I have read, and it is now my favorite series! Great fun!

The author writes just the way I want to read. An engrossing mystery worked on believably by likeable, witty and flawed characters. No wasted wordy descriptions or backstories. He gets right to the point and the story moves forward quickly.
Off to get my hands on a few more in this series.

***** Five stars!

Andy Carpenter is a wise-cracking defense attorney who takes on cases to defend hopeless cases- where the prosecution has mountains of evidence, and have their cases already won before even entering the courtroom. The humorous quips and comments that Andy makes in all situations has the reader laughing out loud, frequently. However, this 3rd novel in the series makes the premise seem a bit formulaic. How will Andy get his seemingly guilty client off the hook? The quips and wry observations occur much less frequently, and some of the fun has left the series for me. The ending was definitely a surprise, though, but many minor characters seem to take on more significance in the resolution of the crimes. I think I'll take a short rest from the series, in the hopes that the next volume will seem fresh again after a breather.

I am so happy I found this series! I love the humor, the reality, and the intricate plots. Andy Carpenter is my kind of guy. Too bad he's taken. He is smart, funny, and a bit goofy at times. He knows when to be serious and he has a conscience (even if he is an attorney). I can't wait to read the next one!

His streak of murder case acquitals made him a regular on cable talk shows. His recent $22 million inheritance bought him a dog rescue operation named after his beloved golden retriever. Now after turning down cases left and right, attorney Andy Carpenter feels like he's facing a midlife crisis. And just when he decides he needs some real work, a newspaper owner friend asks Andy to protect his star reporter.
Daniel Cummings is being used as a mouthpiece by a serial killer..but the reporter gets way too close to his story when he's found near the murderer's latest victim. Quickly working to save what's left of Cummings rep, Andy soon makes news himself when he starts receiving death threats-and moves dangerously close to becoming tomorrow's big obituary.
