My brother read this book. He loved Gary Paulsen (although he HATED to read). Most Paulsen books are late-elementary to middle school reading level, but if you have a child who doesn't like to read (and likes adventures), Paulsen might just be the author to get your child excited about reading--even at early High School level.

This is a sequel to "The Hatchet." I didn't read the first book but enjoyed this one, nonetheless. It's like a coming of age version of "Cast Away." Just a kid out on his own in the wilderness trying to make it through.

This is an awesome book! It is the sequal to "Hatchet". Sure Brian survived and got rescued, but what if he never did? Could he survive the winter? What would Brian do?
I enjoyed this book b/c it was intriguing to have an alternate ending to the book "Hatchet". There is a lot of great information on how to survive in winter time out in the wilderness and I love the author's research and imagination. My son loved all 5 books in this series. (He read them twice within two weeks)
I read this book along with Hatchet to my 11 yr old son. He LOVED it!! We are looking forward to reading the next one in the series The River!! Thanks to PBS we got this book for free!! Love it
A very quick read of what might have happened if... I love reading books that make me feel like I am living what I am reading. While reading this book in the dead of winter, I felt like I was right in the shelter with Brian, howling wind, neighbor skunk Betty and the fear of freezing and starving to death.
All the Gary Paulsen's books really hits the spot with my students. He get the boys interested in his tales and they will read beyond their level to finish his books. They are always bring very good discussions afterward.
Excellent book---and an excellent premise, for those readers who have followed the "Hatchet" series. The author received comments that the earlier stories ended "too soon", because Brian Robeson was rescued from the Canadian wilderness (following a plane crash) "before it became really hard going." This book surmises Brian's experiences had he not been rescued---when the brutal -50 degree winter really set in.
Brian is resilient, logical, inventive. He is also respectful and often afraid of the woods he is trapped in. Paulson's writing has depth and reverence. The pages turn easily because each of Brian's experiences leads believably to the next scenario. Also, though written for young adults, this whole series does not pander to them. The hardships and methods that Brian must use to survive--including killing animals in order to eat and live--are faced squarely and not shied away from.

This book was excellent. It is the sequel to "Hatchet" by Gary Paulsen. Sure at the end of "Hatchet" Brian was rescued. But, what if Brian HADN'T been rescued? Will Brian live through the winter? If he does will he eventually be rescued? Read the book and find out!
