I just finished this book. One of her better books. I love Laurell Hamilton's books, however, I prefer the older books in the collection when Anita was still a hardcore vampire slayer and not a hardcore sex addict. I like the newer books okay but they seem to be so focused on the ardeur that they don't have the plot that the first in the series did. I recommend this one to anyone who enjoys Anita in her crime fighting days. I have read five books in the series but I'm geting them out of order. Does anyone have a list of how the order goes?
Helpful Score: 4
This book felt more put together and a little darker than the other Anita books before it. It also points out that you don't have to be a monster to be truely evil.

I like the earlier books better in the series before Anita picked up the Ardeur. I like the earlier Anita who seemed grittier and I liked her morals that she stuck to. Although the newer Anita has some serious magical power, I liked the hands & guns proficient Anita better who relied on her wits more than magic. I do not mind a little sex but the newer books are becoming more erotica than fiction. Seems each new book adds more lovers to Anita's bed, I wonder when she will reach enough.

This is the first book I've read from Laurell Hamilton's Anita Blake series. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Ms Blake is a necromancer; she's gifted at raising the dead, including the long dead and is hired by a very wealthy man to raise many of the dead from an old burial ground. Supposedly he wants to buy this hill and area for a business venture. The owners won't sell to him because they believe at least one of their ancestors is buried there. Anita needs to raise the dead in order to find the truth for both buyer and unwilling seller. Buy why this particular hill and not one of the many others surrounding it? This sparks Anita's suspicions but before she can investigate further she is sidetrack to a murder investigation. A sheriff she knows has put a request in for her. When she learns from him that 3 teenagers were viciously murdered, their bodies left desecrated, Anita knows she's one of the very few people who can potentially solve this mystery. With her assistant and sexy boyfriend, Anita is off on a dangerous adventure to find out the identity of the killer. Not an easy book to put down!

These books just seem to get sexier and steamier as they go, which works really well with the gothic fantasy world that the characters reside in. It's definitely a more interesting version of Missouri than what we're used to! The author does a great adding new species and characters and I've already got a few favorites. The mix of horror, laughs, and mystery is great and it's a wonderful series for anyone who loves this genre.

Bloody Bones is one of the more brutal outings in this series. A huge portion of the book follows Anita Blake as shes working and this time shes called in on a case that is particularly gruesome. Three teen boys are brutally slain, a young teen girl is left for dead and a young boy has been kidnapped, possibly by a deviant sexual predator of a vampire who enjoys toying with children. Its dark and painful to read the grief instilled within some of these pages.
Anita must also raise an entire graveyard of the dead for a client with only Larry the apprentice as backup. Even she realizes this may too much to handle and is struggling with how shes going to do it without a human sacrifice. As if all of this werent enough to handle, she has to deal with a fey being that may or may not be a bad guy. The only thing she knows for sure is that hes screwing up her latest assignment and is using magic when he shouldnt be.
I really loved this format for the books. Im so POd that it has been screwed with so much in later books. Anyway, as we all know Anita is still dating Richard and Jean Claude. And, surprise, surprise she has to call in Jean Claude for assistance on her vampire case. Once he arrives in his triple poofy armed shirt and spiffy cravat the story takes a little detour from hard boiled vampire executioner and zombie raising mayhem to Anita fending off sexy Jean Claudes flirtations and dealing with vampire politics and protocol and a new master who uses Anitas past to heart-breaking effect.
This book here is Jean Claudes book, all you Richard and Edward fans have been warned. Its pretty easy to see which guy Anita is really digging here. The monster line begins to get real fuzzy for Anita and the sexuality is ramped up a notch but Im still okay with that because there is a plot to this book and it moves. I was always entertained and never bored, irritated or lost. Hamilton excels at keeping all of these plot threads going without confusing her reader all the while giving us tantalizing new tidbits about her main characters. The only thing missing is the darker edged humor that I enjoyed in the first few books. Bloody Bones was so intense it really would have benefited from some well placed sarcasm and dark humor.

Different cover art than other version
In Laurell K. Hamiltons New York Times bestselling series, vampire hunter and animator Anita Blake sinks her teeth into her work. But this day is busier than most. Two jobs pop up that make even Anita doubt her own capabilities: raising an entire graveyard of two-hundred-yhear old corpses and finding out what happened to three Missouri teenagers--slaughtered in a way she has never seen before...
"Come morning, some of us would be alive and some of us wouldn't..."
Of course, maybe there was just the one newly dead vampire to deal with. If so, we might all see the sunrise. But I hadn't lived this long assuming the best. Assuming the worst was always safer, and usually truer."

Book 5. This was a really fun read. We're introduced to dark fae in this story..
SYNOPSIS:
When Anita Blake's boss at Animators, Inc., informs her that she's expected to raise 300-year-old zombies from a field of jumbled bones just to settle a land dispute, she's understandably annoyed. But as soon as she arrives in Branson, Missouri, to do the deed, the job gets more interesting. A psychotic sword-wielding vampire starts committing multiple murders in the area, and Anita must call on Jean-Claude, her powerful fanged suitor, for help. As always, Anita prevails over the undead, keeping Jean-Claude at arm's length, clearing the cemetery land of an ancient enchantment, and nailing the vampiric killer in one fell swoop.

Finally, Finally, Finally. Jean Claude is finally where he should be. The long awaited TRUTH from Anita on her feelings for Jean Claude. We felt the tension rise and now I can see it coming....
This is what I was waiting for. Certainly I enjoy her other potential lovers, but this is what I started reading the series for.
As far as the story line, I thought I was able to guess what was gonna happened. Wrong, not till it happened did I see it coming.
I love the series and on to the next book 6.

I love all Laurell Hamilton's books, especially the Anita Blake series. It's not necessary to read them in order, but it's much easier to know the previous books and what's happened before this one to know her relationship with the main vampire and weres. It has romance, action, fantasy and humor. It's not a silly vampire story, but has a great story to it and very well written. I highly recommend it! :)

I really liked this book. In the earlier book series Anita was this hard core kick ass slayer who never showed much of a human side to her persona. She comes across as much more human in admitting her feelings of attraction to Jean Claude. Finally!! I was getting worried that her lifestyle and powers were forcing her to become one of the "monsters" that she hunts. I like that there is more romance in books four and five. It was a good mix of romantic interest and her ability to be the "executioner". I look forward to reading the next book and how Anita handles dating both Richard and Jean Claude.

Then there were the three dead teenagers in the woods, slaughtered in a way I had never seen before. And then they found the dead girl, drained of blood and left in her bed. I knew what that meant, all right. It didn't take a degree in preternatural studies to figure out that something was very wrong ...and I was right in the middle of it. My name is Anita Blake. Welcome to my life..."
