This book is fantastic for many reasons. First of all, it is a mystery. While I'd predicted the right group of people to contain the perp., I did not correctly predict the actual perp. Well done, Nora Roberts!

The second reason that this book is fantastic is because it has a theme that runs through it about empathy and awareness of how other people are feeling. This is something that I see less and less of in modern America and something we could use a bit more of.

The third reason this book is fantastic is due to the theme of second chances. It shows that true strength sometimes comes from taking a good look at your situation and deciding that you aren't happy with it.

Stubbornness is childish.

Forgiveness is godly.

Wonderful!

Roberts comes through as well as she always does in this thriller involving an archaeologist, her ex-husband (or is he ex??), and secrets about her birth which have been kept from her. The whole story about her birth unwinds in rather spectacular fashion when she confronts the man and woman she has always believed to be her mother and father. Further research shows her that not only the adoption was kept secret. Very good reading.

When 5,000-year-old human bones are found at a construction site in the small town of Woodsboro, the news draws archaeologist Callie Dunbrook out of her sabbatical and into a whirlwind of adventure, danger, and romance. While overseeing the dig, she must try to make sense of a cloud of death and misfortune that hangs over the project - feuling rumors that the site is cursed. She must cope with the presence of her irritating - but irresistible - ex-husband, Jake. And when a stranger claims to know a secret about her privileged Boston childhood, she must question her own past as well....

Set in and around rural Woodsboro, Md., a small town drawn with affection and familiarity, Roberts's latest is the literary equivalent of a big delicious meal whipped up by a talented home cook. She offers a dash of exoticism and innovation-a Neanderthal settlement is discovered on the site of an unwanted housing development, prompting gorgeous young archeologist Callie Dunbrook to race to Woodsboro to take charge of what promises to be the dig of her career. After dollops of detail about archeological work, Roberts dishes up huge servings of comfort food, and it is all the more satisfying for being so straightforward. When the owner of the Antietam Creek development turns up murdered on the site, Callie is thrown into closer contact than she'd like with her ex-husband, who also happens to be the anthropologist sharing responsibility for the dig. Jacob Greystone is a hunk-"long bones, long muscles, all covered in bronzed skin...." Meanwhile, Suzanne Cullen, the hugely successful proprietor of a Mrs. Field's-like baked-goods business, tracks down the archeologist after seeing her on the evening news. Callie, the woman claims, is the baby daughter who was snatched from her stroller when she was just a few months old. Callie hires a beautiful young lawyer, Lana Campbell, who happens to be involved with Doug Cullen, Callie's long-lost brother. Another murder, arson and attempted murder heat up the chase until all the young lovers are drawn in. As in other delectable entertainments by Roberts, it is not the wild denouement but the pursuit itself-studded with scrumptious romantic encounters-that is the real dessert.

Feisty and beautiful Callie Dunbrook, a thirty-something archaeologist, begins work on what promises to be one of the decade's major finds--smack in the middle of the Civil War town of Antietam Creek--and discovers much more than bones and artifacts. A shocking truth about her past, combined with the equally shocking appearance at the dig of her ex-husband, anthropologist Jake Graystone, has her in a turmoil.

As Callie and Jake struggle to work together without letting their equally hot tempers explode in the stifling heat, the mystery of Callie's past threatens to surround and destroy everything they are working for and everything they are. And they are only two of a group of equally engrossing people, both on the dig and off.

Absolutely first-rate Nora, and the perfect beach book.

This was an interesting, suspenseful story from Nora Roberts. Callie lives in Boston and is a young, divorced archaeologist. She's called in as a consultant when an excavation for a new housing development uncovers ancient human remains. While she's excited to join the new project in Maryland, she's upset to find out that her ex-husband has also signed up for the dig. They've only been divorced for a year, so there are still some hard feelings and unresolved issues between the two of them.

The two are joined by others and start unearting remains from 5,000 years ago. At the same time this is going on, her mother sees Callie on t.v. and contacts her. The only problem is that she never met this woman...she has a mother back in Boston and was never told by her family that she was adopted. After digging into her past, Callie learns that she was part of a black market adoption; she was stolen as a one-year old infant and placed with her current parents, who thought everything was legal.

At the same time that she's digging into her past, accidents and later on murder start happening at the excavation site. Rumors are that the land is cursed. But, the evidence points to the fact that somebody doesn't want Callie digging around in her past. She's starting to unravel a mystery that's almost 30 years old, and somebody wants her to stop.

There's friendship, romance, suspense and several different plot threads woven into this story. It'll keep you on your toes and surprise you--all the way to the last page. It's well worth the read!

When Nora Roberts puts away the romance trilogy formula, she's capable of creating a good read. This is one of them.

When ancient human remains turn up at the site of a new subdivision, the project comes to an abrupt halt as a team of archaeologists begin investigating the find. More than ancient bones are uncovered, however, as evidence of past crimes emerges, changing and shattering lives.

The heroines are feisty, self-sufficient, and sexy; the heroes are virile, forceful, and sexy. Notice how that all comes together so neatly.
