A classic lesbian coming out story.
Cute-Cute book! A lesbian classic This is the book your mother had to ask for at her local drugstore because it was behind the counter! A breakthrough for their generation! Good reading!
Honestly, I thought this book was a little bit dumb. Beebo just seemed kind of annoying and based on the description of her, I found it difficult to believe that so many women (including this famous movie star) were attracted to her. It was interesting to hear the discrimination that was present in the 60's towards lesbian women. Amazing because that was not so long ago and it's sad thinking about how many people surely lived lives that were difficult and unfulfilled because society did not allow them to be themselves.
It was really pretty good. I don't know what I was expecting - maybe some angst-laden, shame-filled, closet dwelling characters who never find love? But Beebo (and Ann Bannon) are definitely very progressive, especially for their time. Beebo knows what she wants and she's not afraid to go after it! It's worth it for the history... This is probably the dawn (in fiction) of the modern gay rights movement.
