Heidi is a twelve-year-old girl who is being raised by Bernadette, who is like her guardian. Twelve years ago, Heidi's mom knocked on a stranger's door and said that she had a "bum brain," had nowhere to live, and was holding a baby.
Bernadette takes care of Heidi and her mom, who claims that her name is "So B. It." Heidi now wants to learn more about her mom, so she takes a road trip, by herself, to find out more about her mother's mysterious past. She doesn't really know where she is going, so she just goes wherever the path takes her. But even as little as Heidi knows about her mother, she loves her.
This book reminded me a lot of WALK TWO MOONS, because the storyline is similar. That a good thing in my opinion, because I love that book! At the beginning of SO B. IT, you are kind of like "okay, get on with it," but then the story gets interesting. This is a simple yet complicated book, which makes it very interesting.

I really enjoyed this book. I am not very good at summarys, and could never do this book justice, but it is a great book. The characters are very vivid, you grow to love all of them, and the story kept my interest. I think the middle was more solid then the end, but all in all it is still a great book. This book would be great for ages 12-100.

Amazing book! Loved it! Great read!
A sweet book. This was my teen daughter's. It was on the pile to be listed. I picked it up and gave it a chance. It held my interest. I cared about the main character, and wondered HOW her disabled mom came to be next door to Bernadette. I wondered how many people in this world would be as kind as Dette. Could this be realistic? Maybe. I cheered for Heidi on her trip, and said a big, "Oh- no!" when she was pickpocketed. I wondered why Heidi and her mom ended up so far from where they started, and reflected on how complicated things got when her mother became pregnant. But isn't that how life is?
My daughter (9) picked this out and I ended up reading the entire book in one night. I have never had a book make me cry so much. I felt a huge sense of loss for Heidi. She had such determination. I think the themes in it may be for older kids, maybe teens, or adults although I thought it was marketed for 9-12. Great book.
A strange story, unrealistic in some ways, but realistic in other ways. It definitely had me thinking by the end.
Slightly below my expectations...but a good read
My ten year ikd daugher loved this book. She inhaled it, reading it intwo days. She was very impressed with the idea that a mom could be mentally challenged, and a daughter (her age) have so much responsibility. It made great fodder for talking about diversity. She also seemed a little overwhelmed at the idea of having parents that could not take care of things, leaving that burden to a child.
WOW- beautifully written. I was captivated to find out what happens next. Enjoy this sweet read.
This is an awesome book and a very easy read. Kept me interested and wanting to read until I had finished it. What a great story!
This was good.
This book is usually referred to as a book for young readers. It is written in on a level easily understood by school age readers. However, the story is touching for readers of any age. The problems that Bernie, Heidi, and Mama (So B. It) face and the way they help each other will captivate the hearts of anyone. Heidi was born to a mentally handicapped mother who is left alone with no way of caring for herself or her child and Bernie, who suffers from agoraphobia, looks after them. Only Heidi, when she is still a child, can venture outside and do errands for them. Then, Heidi wants to find where she comes from and begins a trek across the country to find her story. Her incredible luck gets her there safely. It is a great read, but be warned--you'll need to keep the tissues handy.
