I’m totally confused by this book. I admire its sustained narrative energy and was moved by the mother’s struggle, but a sort of chip-on-the-shoulder attitude kept getting in the way. Understandable in terms of the author’s real-life situation, but unsettling when allied to a persistently grudging quality in the fiction.
