Good introduction to Alpine, Washington and the characters that populate it. Emma Lord publishes a weekly newspaper in Alpine and, one the side, stumbles over crime scenes. I enjoyed this a lot.

I really enjoy this series - great introduction to Emma Lord and the small town of Alpine, Washington.
Great series taking place in Alpine, WA, a fictitious city and the protagonist is a single mom who buys the local paper and becomes the editor. There are a number of quirky characters and lots of murder going on. This is the first book in the series and I recommend it to someone who enjoys cozies. Personally I like this series better than her bed and breakfast series.

A new series to me. Adventure in the Northwest--female newspaper owner(Emma Lord) turns detective. A fun read. First of the series.

First in a delightful series in which a new female newspaper owner in a small town in the state of Washington struggles to fit in.
The characters are delightfully nutty & there's always something going on.....mostly leading to a discovery of a murder by the owner of the newspaper, which doesn't please the local sheriff. This delightful series continues with most of the leading characters
in the successive books. You'll learn to love the characters & won't want to miss their growth over the series.Great reading!!

An interesting start to a series-set in a small town in Washington state.

A well-written cozy set in the small northwestern village of Alpine. When murder comes to town, Emma Lord - editor, publisher and often reporter for the weekly paper - unearths old scandals, tantalizing secrets and personal ghosts in her search for the biggest story of her career.
This book started off slow and boring, and I almost didn't stick with it; but it had a good plot and the murder mystery was done well. However, at the same time, it seemed there were so many characters that I couldn't remember who was who. Everyone was related to everyone, and there were so many of them. It felt like she was telling us about everyone in town, but after awhile I didn't even care. Also, Emma seemed to be pretty smart, but couldn't manage her newspaper very well. I will continue to read this series and see if anything changes or if the paper goes belly up. Only because of the mystery did I give it three stars.
This series of a small Washington state newspaper evidently will go from A to Z before it ends. The editor and owner, Emma Lord, is a single mom with a grown son who changes colleges and majors as often as changing socks. Emma's staff is a mix of some great characters and the small mountain town setting is wonderful as are the townspeople. Emma has a long time love, but the sheriff would like to be closer to her. The mysteries are very original. One of my very favorite series and authors.
This is the first in a series, with each title including the next letter of the alphabet (The Alpine Advocate, The Alpine Betrayal, etc).
I found the main character interesting as I have and am currently writing for an online paper. I also have an appreciation for small towns (though I don't live in one).
Good story, had me thinking all along and only revealed the truth in the end.

Of all the Alpine mysteries I have read, this is the best!! I wanted to read every line, and I could not stop reading until I had finished it (except to eat and sleep)!!!

Beginning of the Alpine series by Ms. Daheim. Good read.
Great characters. Mary Daheim's great series. Very thorough writing.
Enjoyable cozy with a lot of quirky characters. I would have liked a little more discription of the setting, Pacific Northwest.
First book in the Mary Daheim Alpine series. With a full year as editor-publisher of The Alpine Advocate under her belt, Emma Lord feels fine about her move to this small town in the foothills of Washington's Cascade Mountains. But what the newspaper badly needs is a story, Emma gets one in Spades.
Handsome Mark Doukas, a grandson of rich, old Neeny Doukas, is murdered, and the murderer is probablyNeeny's only other grandson, black sheep CHris. Even in a family that has never lacked for scandal, that's news; and Emma and her assistant, Vida, who is a walking encyclopedia of local secrets, makes the most of it...

Great series. Mary Daheim is a fantastic mystery writer - and her sense of humor is superb.
Emma Lord has always dreamed of running a newspaper, but the reality is a bit different than she had anticipated. The bills are rolling in and the money is rolling out in this small town in Washington where there isn't much happening which is newsworthy. Alpine is shocked when the son of a prominent family is murdered. Another murder follows and Emma is consumed with not only reporting the news, but in finding out who is causing it. There are plenty of people around who have a motive for the killing, even within the victim's family, but Emma doesn't want to jump to conclusions. Finally the murderer is revealed and Emma's life is in danger.
A very enjoyable series!
