  When I was a child
in an all white church
while singing songs of
"Holy holy holy
lord God almighty"
were whispers of
"Can't you be still"
With heads bowed in prayer
"Won't you be quiet"
In a reverent house of God
feeling unholy
I couldn't be still

I've since found a church
with mostly black faces
swaying as they sing
"I love the lord
and he loves me"
There were shouts of
"Halleluijah and Amen"
with arms reaching up
"Praise the lord Jesus"
In a joyus house of God
I stood still
