It was a beaautiful day for a wedding in spite of the fact that it was held outside on a cold October evening. The sun was shining and the wind was blowing at the lakeside wedding. My best friend's son was getting married. I used to baby-sit for him when he was little but I hadn't seen him in quite a while. It was apparent that the bride and groom were very much in love. I wished them a happy life but wondered if it was really possible.
I was feeling quite cynical about the state of marriage in general. Dave and I had been married for close to thirty years. Raising four kids through the teenage years, maintaining an old house, broken down cars and never having enough money had taken its toll on our marriage. In fact lately I had been fantasizing about an apartment of my own with no one and nothing to worry about except myself.
The bridal dance at the reception was so touching it brought tears to my eyes. The bride and groom looked into each others eyes with love while carefully executing each step. I overheard them saying later that they had taken dance lessons just for the occasion.
Then the DJ called for all married couples to dance. Dave and I stayed in our seats despite the prompting of others. We don't dance. I feel too self-conscious. All the married couples except for Dave and I were on the dance floor. Then the DJ said, "everyone who has been married one year or less leave the dance floor". One couple left. "Everyone who has been married six years or less leave the dance floor". A few more left. "Ten years, fifteen years, twenty years, twenty five", only three remained. "Thirty years", two couples were left, the brides parents and the grandmother and grandfather of the groom. Finally only one couple was left. It was the grandmother and grandfather of the groom, my best friends parents. The DJ asked them how long they had been married. Sixty-two years they answered.
Watching them brought tears to my eyes again. I had know them since first grade. They lived right across the street from us and I spent as much time at their house as my own. At that time they used to fight alot. Not bicker or argue but loud and passionately heated fights, but watching them dancing now it was clear that they were very happy with each other.
Maybe there was still hope for Dave and me. I took his hand and asked, "May I have the next dance?".

A quote to ponder: Marriage is not a ritual or an end. It is a long, intricate dance together, and nothing matters more than your own sense of balance and your choice of partner.

Every marriage will hit its rough spots, but if you have determination, you'll make it through and be more solidly united than before. This was such a nice story to hear. Sixty-two years is a long time.
