I love camping, but it's hardly a vacation for me. The kids are always hungry and it's a full time job keeping them fed. I usually make everyone a big breakfast each morning, hoping that it will keep them until dinner. There are snacks on hand, so if anyone gets hungry between breakfast and dinner they can help themselves, but if I'm around at noon I still hear demands of, "I'm hungry".
When I'm not cooking there are dishes to be done, which is not easy. First I have to get the water, then heat it and when done dispose of it. Even though we have a big supper each night, everybody wants hot dogs, popcorn and smores around the campfire. I either have to do the dishes before bed or in the morning before
breakfast since our supply is limited.
What I really enjoy is getting out by myself in the woods or the water each day. I'm not much of a swimmer, but my favorite activity is to float on my innertube. I like to go out where the water is deep and no one can bother me.
One day, I was floating out far enough from shore that the children on the beach, combined with the hum of the distant motor boats, sounded lake far away music. The water was a crystal clear aquamarine and from the sun shining overhead stars seemed to sparkle on the surface. There were just a few fluffy white clouds slowly moving in a baby blue sky. The water felt refreshingly cool in compairson to the warm sun on my skin. Every so often a soft breeze would come by to caress my body and bring the fresh scent of the inland sea to my senses.
As I was gently rocked by the waves, it occured to me that this was the rhythm of God's heartbeat. I was in the womb of God; in a state of complete suspended bliss. As I surrendered myself to the lakes current, it pulled me further away from the shore. It was such a peaceful feeling that I had no desire to move. The current was taking me to the other side of the lake where I saw rolling green hills.
Surrounded by such beauty, I lost all sense of myself. I remained in this heavenly state until I was almost halfway across the lake.
Reluctantly I started back to shore, kicking my feet and pushing the water with my hands. I wasn't making much progress and was begining to get tired, but I had a long way to go. If I stopped for a rest the current would take me away again, which was very tempting, but it was time to get back to reality.
My husband was paddling in his inflatable kayak close to the shore. I started calling him and motioning for him to come over. Although he couldn't hear me, he finally noticed me and promptly came to my rescue. I asked him to tow me in. As I hung onto a rope he paddled his boat, teasing me and laughing all the way.
When we got back to the campsite, there were dishes to be done, the kids were hungry as usual and demanded to be fed. I began to wonder if I was really rescued at all.
The green hills on the other side of the lake seemed more appealing than ever. Tomorrow I would have a new adventure exploring them.
