A story about the Christiansen family in Door County, Wisconsin during WWII as they struggle to hold on. Kate raises rabbits to save for college; the family works in the cherry orchards for a living; all the family members work together to get through tough times. The local authorities allow German war prisoners from a nearby POW camp to pick the fruit. Thomas, the father, befriends Karl, a prisoner who tutors Kate in math. Charlotte, the mother, is swept into a world where love , duty and honor are not as clear-cut as she and Kate once knew. Charlotte's love affair with Karl complicates their lives. Ben, the son of the Christiansen's returns from war bitter, the secrets they all been keeping threaten to explode their world. An excellent read.
