Book Review of The Forgotten Beasts of Eld

The Forgotten Beasts of Eld
reviewed on

One of my favorite books of all time, and I'm getting old now. I have read it three times, each time as good as the first. This book is as good as the Lord of the Rings, as good as the Earthsea trilogy. Absolutely a classic: Magic and the transformation of the human spirit, the complexities of good and evil within a single human soul, what it means to love. The sense of place and atmosphere is incredible. Some reviewers have said the first chapter was slow, but it sets up that atmosphere and the character of Sybel as she was, alone but not lonely, so that you can see how her character evolves. The sexual violence is mild, but I would say this is for 14+, depending on how innocent the 14-year old is, might be worth waiting. I never read a better book about what revenge and anger cost those who indulge such feelings and desires. The book has had a huge ethical impact on my life. I am now trying to get copies for my granddaughters to read.
